I have been looking for a partner for a while :(:(:(. Now I feel like I need to be more active and start taking singles, but I don't plan to compete in pro-am. Hopefully the coach knows some amateur girls that she can introduce me to.

Recommendations?

how about go to a social dance? there's typically more ladies than men.

you are looking for a pre'champ lady, right (if you are who I think you are).. in that case probably singles will help out staying dance ready and will keep you around the dance circle closer so you will know when girls are available

cannot make a recommendation unless you give us some criteria.. from the info you gave us i could say any short or midheight pro or high level amateur lady.

also what is more important: amount of time on the floor, or level of instruction?

If you are not interested in pro-am, try take lessons from some very well established pro ladies who are very experienced, always busy training/traveling to compete; very high ranking experienced pros usually teach very serious am competitors, so they might have some inside info of if one of their very serious am students split or some other serious am come to them asking help for partner.

Taking a private lesson by yourself (sans partner), I believe.

um...what are "singles"?

I think he means take "single lesson" (only him with a female pro) instead of "couple lessons" (with partner and a pro teacher)

gotcha. so... a private vs. coaching, in my-speak.

My speak too. :)

It's the term people use when they don't want to be confused with "doing Pro/Am," as in, someone who takes a lesson with just a coach but isn't going to be competing with them. It also has to do with someone coaching an unpartnered dancer rather than a couple: like, I'm going to take a lesson by myself with another coach, she's just teaching me, and will dance with me a bit on the lesson too. That's a "singles" lesson, as in "Yeah, she said she'd do some single's lessons too."

huh? but a private can be both for a couple or for a single person, so can a coaching be either couple or single??

I've had single coaching lessons with visiting coaches (US based as well as those from the UK) while in the states. I know it's less common, but I've done this quite a few times.

Some teachers will not teach just one student on a private lesson because they don't want to feel like they need to be dancing with the student for most of the lesson. They will only teach couples. Other teachers will take the one student, in a so-called "singles" lesson.

I am super-excited because I have a couple of singles lessons lined up with someone whom I admire, plus a couple of "coaching" sessions where my regular Pro/Am teacher will be dancing on the lesson with me.

I think it's more Laura's second explanation (singles vs. couples) than that one.

that's right. Some coaches in NYC are like that. They don't teach single students except that student is doing pro-am. If a few students fighting for the same slot of lessons, the pro-am student on priority list.

It's SOOOOOOO hard to track down the high-profile pro ladies. They are always all over the world... and there is no consistency. I am thinking of tracking down one of them for occasional high-level coaching and partnership information when possible, and have another young pro to have more floor time??

Thoughts?

Right now nobody is in town because of all pro ladies are traveling for International. Most of them should be back by the end of this week.
