I hope to compete in one of the bachata contests sometime soon (never thought they even have competitions in bachata!) and would really, really appreciate your help. Do you have any special tricks? Any ideas? Drops? "Funny" timing? Moves from other dances? Videos? Styling? Shines?
Thank you in advance

Well you can do any move in bachata that you do in salsa, merengue...so you have a lot to choose from. It's all a matter of adapting the moves to the 1,2,3 hip thing, or...the hip thing, 2, 3, 4 or...the 1, hip thing, 3, 4. :)

Yeah... I've been dancing bachata for a while now and got kinda creative with it, but it must be something special for the contest, something not many people would expect to see. Lifts? Bonza... however it's called... when the guy spins you at the angle 'til you hit the floor and slide... I sooooo need to hear what you think!
SD salsaguy, that's what I said when they told me there are competitions  And that's why I want to do it - a challenge

What's the craziest bachata move you've ever seen? My problem is that I'm always dancing when the bachata comes on and so I don't see many bachata moves. After all when you're dancing it should be the music, you and your partner, with just enough peripheral vision / attention so you can navigate the dance floor. I'll try and keep an eye out this Friday and next Tuesday, though.

Nothing to report tonight. One bachata song played between 10:30 and midnight and nothing fancy done. I was up there with the fancy moves, and since I'm a rank beginner that does not count for much. Sinec I wanted to see some really crazy out of the world moves I was a little dissapointed. However, I actually danced this song with a natural follower who had never done salsa/ latin dancing before and who was on the beat, so this somewhat consoled me. :)

Seems that its really hard to find a good teacher of bachata...everyone seems to know (well those that pursue it) the basics, but getting beyond the basics seems like a time space warp anomoly..or however that is spelled....most of the time, if you get a real good connection, the basic and closed eyes is all you really need...or all I really need.. :)
But I would love to learn more moves, I tend to put in CW2step moves in which fit really nicely, but I can do the bachata basic all night...also in bolero, I love that basic step too.... (not danced at latin clubs that I know of though...)

I've had some good bachatas  When done right, there's a connection between partners, it's a close dance, sensual, slow dips are one of my favorite parts

I like to keep my bachata simple, sensual, and smooth (s cubed!) It's all about melting into my partner

I always focus on connection in Bachata...the one dance that isn't about lots of spins and craziness...a time to tone things down and rest after a few turbo Salsa numbers. :P
(btw Youngsta, I made sure to steal a few of those moves I saw you using in SF)

I've found a couple of good videos at Emule. All of them ITALIAN. I don't know why but the Italians LOVE bachata, and they have developed many interesting steps and turns.
So: look for "Bachata" at Emule and you'll see a few results. Narrow your search to "Videos" only.
If you can't find it I'll put it for you in my site, so you can download it comphortably. Get ready to download a few Megas.

Yes and the energy they put into it   something that is so simple yet can look so amazing by different dancers.

Bachata can have a certain degree of difficulty when the Italians dance it. The guy dances nicely. The lady melts too much to my taste, and the class hardly has a clue of what's going on  . Take a look.

Ok, please tell me how that is done....break it down!! :) The generic basic I learned is the 4 count "walk"step(1 beat left foot) step(2, right) step(3 left) tap(&, right) hip(4) in the opposite direction and the reverse for the other way. So can anyone break down the dip? Just want to incorporate it. ;)
Thanks!

I suspect dips may take four beats or could even take eight beats

I'll try to pay attention if I go out again this weekend, but mostly I just follow. It is on the eventual to do list to take a real class someday. But one very sensual dip is to go down to the left (for example) and sweep around to the right and then up... and then do it again. Another dip I've followed is where the bachata goes back and forth more than left and right, you begin to lean more into it and more into eachother, so as the woman goes back, she just leans back farther, the emphasis being more on the shoulders than the tap and hip for that. Is that helpful at all?
Thanx for the video link!

Sorry, I can't follow your lead.. :( ...I think for me to pick it up by seeing a sentence and not the move, I need someone to explain the lead move step by step...nothing personal... ...

That's a cool video! :) I never knew Bachata was so popular in Italy. It is nice to see that Bachata is becoming as universal as Salsa. Actually, I was in Shanghai about 3 weeks ago and visited a Salsa club called the Silver Moon and they actually played quite a few Bachatas.
I have to say that I agree with most people on this thread that Bachata should be close, personal, sensual, and not too flamboyant. I took a Latin dance class in college & took first place in our Bachata final by just keeping it simple and sensual. Although you can do Salsa moves in Bachata, I really don't think you need to (then again, to each their own). Personally, I like to keep hardly any distance between myself and my partner. Maybe I dance too close, yet usually I end up close enough to the point where our legs are staggered and slightly in-between each other's. Of course, the woman must take care not to lift her inside leg too much on the tap or else the night might end early for the guy!

Hi,
I'm glad you liked it (the video I mean).
Here's another one, less sophisticated and of less quality, but maybe you can take a couple of ideas:

Enjoy!
PS: When I visit the DF, I feel I can relax here. We have a few "DF-like" forums here too, but this one outstands for its participants, and all of us keep a cordial and friendly interexchange of ideas...
PS 2 : I'm thinking... I'll try to translate my site to english, at least part of it. I've placed good stuff there, videos for example (the articles are in hebrew...) you could download... I'll see.

At least it looks EXACTLY the same as on1 but on2 instead...the basic step is the same, the moves are the same, it is just started on a different beat.....so I guess its more like salsaon1 vs power2 and no ET....which makes it easier to steal the moves... 8)
