Yeah, in the list, there should be an application that looks for update each time you dialin or turn your computer on (DSL or T1). Sagitta is right, get your patches and fixes. Like giving your PC a tune up every 6000 googles.

I guess that means I'm overdue for an operating system oil change.
And too many googles between oil changes? Persih the thought! 8)

I've recently learned the importance of doing such things as well as cleaning up my hard drives. now I do both on a somewhat regular basis.

It's amazing how easy it is to take these things for granted ... until your computer gets infected with a virus. :x

Yeah, my family got zapped last week because not having "any" kind of antivirus protection in addition to windows critical updates. Thank goodness I was able to rebuild it. Oh and yeah, they got a good speech spanking from Auntie. :P :o 8)

I actualy choose not to do the updates. I find they slow down my computer a lot. I have a router as well as a software firewall and really good antivirus protection...not the goofy mcafee/norton stuff that comes standard on the machine when you by it. So with all of that I feel really safe and have never had a problem. I also keep all of my data on an external hard drive for safer keeping and then reformat the computer on a semi regular basis.

I am going to resurrect this, since I have a question about windows updates.
I usually get my updates if they're critical for security patches. I got this update notice
"Windows Genuine Advantage Notification tool
Size: 1.2 MB
The Windows Genuine Advantage Notification tool notifies you if your copy of Windows is not genuine. If your system is found to be a non-genuine, the tool will help you obtain a licensed copy of Windows."
has anyone installed it? If yes, did you have any troubles after you did? The reason I ask is because I have had some trouble with IE 7 and I had to remove it in order for my music software to work properly. This update appears to be something that is related to the new Windows they're rolling out and I am worried that it will interfere with other stuff I have installed and it will not be removable.

Once I updated the "recommended" IE 7 all of my pc problems started. I have driver problems, can't really watch videos (forget about youtube) without experiencing critical errors. I hate IE 7 too! blech!

In other words, "let us snoop in your computer to see if you have a pirated version, and if your system is unpaid we will help you to pay us for it."
No Thanks.

I also don't have any IE prolems with 7. Although I can't quite gt the hang of the tabs, I am constantly trying to close them all down instead of just one. Or I forget to tab and intead open up a whole new browser.

You can remove it. Go to control panel, add/remove programs and look for IE7. It will give you IE6 back.

Heh, tell me about it. Supposedly the tabbed browsing is easier on the memory footprint, but my machine has 2 GB of RAM so I just keep opening up new IE windows, not tabs. :)
