If you are trying to get the balance, feeling the floor feeling, etc, by going a half size or smaller in Latin shoes, how do you know if your big toe is hanging off the shoe enough? How far can it be off the edge and be effective and safe...this is all assuming the rest of the shoe feels good and fits well...What is the ideal?

IMO, short enough not to create an edge that "flaps" on the floor while doing forward rumba walks with lots of toe pressure. It should be mostly toes, not mostly empty shoe edge. Some people can dance with shoe flaps. Drives me nuts though.

So if you are doing rumba walks your toes can be way off the edge and that would be better than having the edge of a too big shoe fold back or create a flap? Just want to make sure I understand correctly. I want to make sure before I buy some new ones:) Also, is the toes hanging off and dragging feeling OK and not bothersome? Like you could hurt your big toe?

lemonade, it depends on the shoe, your foot, how you do your rumba walks and your comfort with having callouses on the top edges of your toes. *grin*

I'm sure each has a personal preference. I happen to like it if my toes hang out just a bit over the edge (anywhere from 1/8"-3/8"). I really dislike having a huge flap of excess if I point my foot (like when you pass your foot in a rumba walk or when you try to make a beautiful leg line in a pose).

I've never hurt my big toe because of having a shorter shoe. And I don't find the feeling of my toes hanging off to be bothersome.
