View Full Version : DWTS7 Week 3 Performance (spoilers)
Another week, and per Tom Bergeron, THE DRAMA JUST KEEPS ON COMING!
Loving Lacey's dress so far, and wondering, just how "their own" can they make VW? This could be a good week for them. Or a REALLY bad one. That and what Corky can do with Cloris is what I'm most looking forward to seeing.:)
Susan- super cute dress. A lot of it seemed ackward, but when she seemed to have it, it was too sweet, I wanted a bit more sassiness.:)
Lance- "9 out of 10 senior citizens approve this viennese waltz":)
Absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE that gown, I'm such a sucker for grey. It seemed a bit off to me, but not bad.
Maurice- Those outfits are horrible. It's like they had turquoise remnants to use up and didn't care if they matched. (I do like Cheryl's shoes though.) Dancing was just off, uncontrolled maybe is the word I want? Or maybe I was distracted byh the horribly mismatched turquoise and the ridiculous clocks.
Rocco- Karina did a nice job of spinning around the floor. Just very clunky, which is actually, kind of musical since the song is clunky, so maybe that was actually a good thing. And Rocco's outfit, ugh. The vest is so very ill fitting.
Warren- Kym's dress is pretty, Warren's maroon is just well, I'm not a fan of maroon. But the dancing was surprisingly nice.:)
Cody- it was ok, but didn't like the costumes, found the rhinestone stocking seams distracting, the fringe is just weird and heavy and just weird hair. And OMG, the band is just bleck and the guitar playing on the leg is something that should never be done and never ever more than once. (It's a pet peeve move of mine, just find it, smarmy.)

The electric guitar in Toni's Viennese Waltz is KILLING me!! So bad.
Toni- Hehe, the sitting on the floor was too Cloris.:)
Did I miss the handstand? Thought it was nicer than Warren's, and she's just as big as Warren with that skirt.:)
The electric guitar in Toni's Viennese Waltz is KILLING me!! So bad.
Ugh, yep, yep....

I think I just peed myself watching Corky & Cloris' jive.
Cloris- Well, I'm definitely laughing. Have to wonder, was the wig supposed to come off?:) Really like the "Clorky" on his jacket.:) I have to say Corky does well with what he's given.:)
I think I just peed myself watching Corky & Cloris' jive.
Luckily I'd gone during the last commercial break!
Brooke- I really really hate that song, but nice costuming and very nice dancing.

Just got in; what is the deal with Misty?
Torn achilles tendon. Out of the competition apparently.
Commercial break question: Is Lisa Bonet's hair in that Life On Mars show really 1973ish?

Just caught the tail end. That's too bad. I hope they'll invite her back ... and a good thing she wasn't on the show *before* the Olympics.
You know, such a weird injury, I wonder if maybe there was some damage from all the volleyball before this. Yikes, really hope this doesn't hurt her career.:(
"What Misty's departure means for the competition on what promises to be a DRAMATIC night." Like how dramatic? Someone will go home or someone won't. They act like her leaving will inspire them to send home 3 more couples or something.

maybe it's the heels!
Yah, I wonder how long of a setback it would be for someone who trains/competes regularly. I mean, I would think being in such good physical condition has to be a huge plus. Really too bad.

had a friend (active dancer) with a torn achillies. It's a long recovery, his was six months I believe.

Poor, poor, POOR Misty! My heart truly goes out to her. The poor girl looked like she was near tears the whole time Tom was interviewing her. And that video? The noise made me nauseous  I remember a girl on my high school cheerleading squad blowing out her Achilles' when landing from a toe-touch - let me tell you, the sound is just ungodly. And it is a very serious , very painful injury, with a long healing time - and many people don't regain the full range of motion they once had. My prayers go out to her...
Despite all the drama leading up to this week's episode, I think tonight was actually the best performance night yet. People are starting get a bit more comfortable and are starting to hit a groove. It also seemed to be the "night of a thousand old people jokes" - which, IMO, is getting rather old (no pun intended). On with the critiques...
Susan & Tony - yes, well all know by now that Susan moves small and timid. But her footwork is actually pretty good...she knew her choreography, and she danced it with (maybe a little too much) precision. Overall, it was a nice jive...not too flashy, simple, age-appropriate, and cute. Not necessarily the most memorable routine, but it wasn't terrible. And can I just say I am SOOOO PUMPED to see the Rockettes on the show????!!! My dreams of being one were crushed at 18 when I reached my peak height of 5'5" (you have to be at least 5'7"), but I still love watching them dance :-)
Lance & Lacey - I've never been so happy to eat my own words...these two were just lovely tonight. Lacey looked very pretty...although the dress she was wearing made her look almost matronly. Not the most technically proficient Viennese - Lance's rise and fall is almost non-existent, he needs to "roll through" his foot, and he tends to cut his lines short - but again, another nice, enjoyable, theatrical routine. See, Lacey, following the rules can yield nice results!
Maurice & Cheryl - I was honestly not expecting great things from these two after a very forgettable rumba last week. But these two had the best jive of the evening! Maurice's footwork was outstanding, and he seemed to have the best grasp of jive technique of any of the celebs - crisp flicks, high knees, and best of all - CONTROLLED energy. I could have done without the "cutesy" costumes...the clock on Maurice's jacket was a little to Flava-Flav for my taste. But Cheryl actually looked good in colored shoes! And I hate colored shoes on girls (i.e. Anya's red ones last week)!
Rocco & Karina - I've said it before and I'll say it again - these two look like more and more of a couple each time I see them. And Karina...blindfolding Rocco? Was I the only one that saw the sexual connotation to that? :raisebro: As for the Viennese - meh. It was stilted and awkward, with rise and fall that were exaggerated, but it's what I've come to expect from Rocco. What they lacked in skill they more than made up for in chemistry...these two honestly look like to lil lovebirds just having the time of their lives goofing off, and Rocco is just so darn thankful to be there. I can overlook their dancing in favor of that...but I CANNOT overlook Rocco's head-to-toe white satin getup, which looked like someone stole the infamous puffy shirt straight off the old Seinfeld soundstage. He looked like a giant meringue!
Warren & Kym - yes, Warren is big. Yes, Warren is funny. But is he likeable? YOU BETCHA! Another guy that looks like he's having the time of his life, every second of every dance. And he's good at it too! He had the timing, he had the moves (loved the little hip-hop wave they threw in!), and he has better rise and fall than any of the other celeb guys. My only nitpick is that Warren seems to "skip" along the cross steps, which makes him a bit too bouncy at times. But I loved this Viennese...classy, romantic, and well-executed. The song was amazing!
Cody & Julianne - I really had high hopes for Cody's energy here...but unfortunately, he just couldn't focus it well enough. His technique could have been great if he didn't do everything on a stick-straight leg! Literally, no bending whatsoever. He had what pro likes to call "Gingerbread Man Syndrome". He also made the rookie mistake of getting back-weighted on the fall away rock. Too much "guitar leg" choreography on Julianne's part - it's been done, and now it's becoming kinda cliche for me. And I hate it when she wears wigs! She has such gorgeous hair; why cover it with an obviously-fake wig? Cody, on the other hand, was the spitting image of Benji Schwimmer for me tonight...or maybe Benji's slightly more awkward cousin.
Toni & Alec - I am probably the only person here that squealed with joy when I saw their costumes - I LOVE Marie Antoinette. She was one of my Halloween costumes last year! However, the costumes were the only thing I enjoyed about their waltz...choreographically, it was a nightmare. Way too threatrical, trick-laden, and over-the-top. And Toni is still afraid to move her head (and her eyes!) when in dance position. I hope Alec reverts back to his toned down, subtle choreography next week.
Cloris & Corky - welp, not much to say on the technique front, since there was little to no actual jive here to critique. But for what it was worth, it had me laughing my rear off. Comedy is Cloris' strength, so she may as well stick with it as long as she's on the show. This week must have been Corky's "homage to Mark" - it looked like they took the pink jacket Mark wore during week 1, threw Corky's name on the back in rhinestones, and then said, "Ooh, let's pull those nerd glasses Mark wore last season outta the prop closet!" and had Corky wear them. The resemblence between the two was uncanny...the facial expressions, the mannerisms, the way he moves...I am seriously beginning to think that Mark is the result of Corky conjugating and splitting like a paramecium or something. Well, at least I know what my boyfriend will look like in 20-some years!
Brooke & Derek - after their little blow-up during the lead-in, I thought for sure this waltz was gonna bite the big one. But it was everything I could have asked for in a waltz - sensitive, simple, smooth, and beautiful. Derek's choreography this season is really quite clever, and Brooke has finally nailed the frame and footwork of the smooth dances. And her gown was my favorite of the entire night - I was seriously thisclose to calling up Randall right after the show and saying "Here's my credit card number, send me THAT dress after the season's over!" I think Derek might need to tread carefully, though...the whole "You have a lazy mind!" comment made me cringe. But if they can work through the roadblocks in their learning this season, they will win this thing.
Awards of the Evening:
Most Overused Phrase of the Night: "Winner winner, chicken dinner!" This seriously needs to be retired...pronto.
Most Overused Comedy Fodder: The whole "Len is old and so is Cloris, they should go play bingo/live in a nursing home/etc. together" bit. Again, no pun intended...but this bit needs to be retired, too.
Wise Words of the Moment: "Remember, this is not a popularity contest...this is a popularity contest with sequins!" - Tom Bergeron
Best Sexual Innuendo of the Evening: The Rocco/Karina eye mask bit...'nuff said.
Did You Notice...?
*Derek either eating/chewing gum/sucking on candy in the background while Maurice & Cheryl were getting their scores?
*Lacey unintentionally giving a back-handed compliment to the nursing home residents by saying "Yah, Cloris is old, she should be here!" *cringe*
*Derek mouthing "Hi baby!" to Shannon during one of the red room shots before they cut to commercial?
*Samantha looking very, very thin :?
*Carrie-Ann's necklace? LOVED IT!
*Toni accidentally referring to the waltz at the "Vietnamese Waltz"? *Shades of Donyelle from season 2 of SYTYCD*

Again, ...come here probably once/twice per season. But, have to say how unrelentingly angry I am at Corky and whomever else was involved in making a complete buffoon out of Cloris. This was the heigth of unprofessionalism and lack of class.
No, the woman does not have the beauty, sexuality, or grand penchées of the others, but she has dignity, and a grand career that deserves more than being made a clown of. She couldn't Jive, but she could, and did, triple step. Meaning that she could have danced a nice swing that still had some humor, but taught her something about dance, and allowed her to make a good showing on international television. Last week's Paso fell short of tonight's humiliation, but wasn't much better. It wasn't a comedic farce, but Corky just didn't teach her properly.
Cloris could be a great inspiration to those who are a great majority of our students. DWTS is all about ratings, and doesn't give a ....... Corky, as a pro, misses the measure big time.

I was again disappointed and angry at Lacey last night. I just feel like she's selling us out to try to come across as new and different and non-traditional. And to insinuate that if they wanted to find out if their routine was traditional enough that they had to go to an old folks home? What do they think people in competitions (real ones) do every day? Why couldnt they have asked a 10 year old who has been doing smooth/standard for years, or a 20 year old who has won all sorts of awards and is getting ready to turn pro, or a 30, 40, 50 or 60 year old who currently dance at USA Dance competitions? They just act like traditional = very old and that makes me angry. Lacey especially makes me mad because she KNOWS the ballroom world. I feel like she is giving Lance (and some of the viewers who have no idea about ballroom) the wrong idea. I feel like she has a responsibility to represent our world to the public who have no idea about it and that she is doing a very poor job. Now I can see why there would be rumors of her not getting along with the other pros. Would you be all buddy-buddy with someone who is thumbing their nose at your world? I dont know...perhaps I'm overly sensitive about it, but I really hope they do not win because of all this.
As for everyone else, I thought they all did pretty good. I still dont really have a favorite yet. I do agree with a previous poster about the whole Corky and Cloris thing, though. He could have had her do more than a few steps of swing...she could have totally done it. I found it quite painful to watch her just walk around and be silly...IMO,if she cant do even a basic single time swing, she really should not be on the show. And if she CAN do it (which I think she could have), I dont understand why Corky would not have had her do at least part of the routine actually dancing. I dunno.
Cant wait to see the Rockettes perform tonight! I love a good kickline!!
Also, I am assuming that since Misty is out, they wont kick anyone off tonight? It would run them a week short if they did so, so I'm assuming they wont?

So far Warren is my favorite. The dude is huge and has some pretty good feet. Even if he's not 100% the way he's moving around should be inspiration to anyone who thinks that they can't do a particular dance.
anp, I completely agree about Lance and Lacey. I find her really annoying. Also, as far as I can tell, *her* Standard/Smooth is kind of a disaster, which can get distracting.
They might eliminate someone tonight and then end up with a 2-couple final. I think that's what happened season 3, right?

Lacey's lack of experience with smooth/standard has had me scratching my head as to why they asked her to be on the show in the first place. All the other pros have had at least a teaching familiarity in both the Latin & Smooth/Standard styles...except Lacey. She is predominantly a swing dancer who has done Latin in the past (although, based on some of her technique and steps, I'm beginning to think that's dicey, too). She has never competed in smooth/standard (unless you count the little bit of quickstep she did on SYTYCD) and I certainly don't think she teaches it professionally. Isn't it kind of requisite that the pros on the show are supposed to be able to excel in both? I can totally understand how the rumors of Lacey not getting along with the other pros is true...I'm sure that they don't appreciate her tearing apart the traditions they have built their careers on, but I also think it might be due to her comparative lack of qualifications, and the fact that, as a rookie, she got one of the better dancers as her partner (I have noticed that the rookie pros often get stuck with the "less than talented" partners - Corky & Cloris, Ted & Inna, Fabian & Marlee, Nick & Tatum, etc. - as a sort of "dues paying" on DWTS.)
Doubt they'll vote anyone off this week...they set a precedent for not doing so when Sara Evans left in season 3.

Andy Dehnart aka Reality Blurred tore DwtS' producers and hosts a new one for milking Misty's injury all night:
http://www.realityblurred.com/realitytv/archives/dancing_with_the_stars_7/2008_Oct_07_misty_may-treanor_teased_out
Misty May-Treanor has dropped out of Dancing with the Stars 7, and will have surgery tomorrow for a ruptured Achilles tendon—which the two-hour show got around to revealing 15 minutes before it concluded.
Dancing with the Stars has officially become the reality TV version of local news: they tease and tease and tease, because they’re so damn insecure about their ratings, and get around to telling us something that we already know (http://www.realityblurred.com/realitytv/archives/dancing_with_the_stars_7/2008_Oct_05_may-treanor_injury) or could easily find out, not realizing that the teasing has turned us off.
They’re such a****** that they’ll make us wait until the end of tonight’s results show to reveal whether or not Kim Kardashian will return, or if the empty spot will be filled at all. In the final moments of the show, Samantha Harris said, “Tomorrow night, we’ll tell you what Misty’s exit means for the competition on what promises to be a dramatic night.”
Tomorrow night, Samantha and company, you can all bite me, because I’m going to fast forward through your whole damn waste of time results show and whatever irrelevant musical act you’ve booked. The relentless teasing and self-promotion on last night’s episode was ridiculous, and now you’re doing even more and expect us to fall for it all over again?
Monday night, the show’s producers demonstrated their compassion for Misty May-Treanor by showing her injury over and over again, often in slow motion, followed by dramatic footage of her in excruciating pain. That always came with Tom Bergeron’s shameless teases, which made the series sound like one of those self-aggrandizing media outlets that has more self-promotion than actual content.
Tom Bergeron kept teasing Misty May-Treanor’s eventual appearance as if he was suddenly hosting a tabloid entertainment show. “She’ll join us later in the show to talk exclusively about what happened, how serious it is, and how it will affect her,” he said. He read similar teases about every 15 minutes, because we’re so stupid that we wouldn’t stay tuned in if we didn’t know that was coming. “Still to come, Misty May-Treanor will be here for an exclusive interview about her injury, plus, of course, more dancing,” he said.
Bergeron’s best/most aggravating line of the night, though, was when Misty May-Treanor finally hobbled out on crutches and Tom said, “I’m going to ask a rhetorical question; I think we all know the answer to this…” Yes, Tom, you bastard, we knew the answer (http://www.realityblurred.com/realitytv/archives/dancing_with_the_stars_7/2008_Oct_05_may-treanor_injury) even though you pretended like we didn’t and made us wait, because we have Internet access and don’t need a cheesy show to jerk us around for a 105 minutes.
If it wasn’t for Cloris Leachman, I might have been insulted enough to watch Prison Break, and I have to be really insulted to want to watch such terrible writing, never mind Michael Rappaport. But I digress, and Cloris she stole the entire episode—and not because of her outrageously ridiculous dance.
Instead, when Cody Linley was backstage getting his scores, Samantha asked him if being on the show had attracted new fans. “Yeah, you know, I’ve had a lot of older women, they’re like, ooh, you can rumba,” he said, and Cloris suddenly appeared from behind the camera and walked up to him and without saying a word, put her hand up as if to sensually caress him, stopped herself, and stepped back. It was such great physical comedy that judges were cracking up and not even ready to show their scores.

I didn't like Lance and Laceys waltz either but for a different reason.. It was plain and boring and to Lacey's style at all.. I must be the only one that likes Lacey cause i hope she stays on the show a lot longer... She is a breath of fresh air..
And since when it is ok to keep discriminating against size? Enough about Warrens size.. I know lots of "big" people that can dance... He dances like almost everyone out there in the real world.. Oh gosh nobody says, wow she dance inspite of being so small.. Knock it off already...
And i too agree with whoever said that Corky looked too much like Mark.. The first thing i said when i saw that pink jacket was, Oh looke they resurrected Marks bubble gum pink jacket...
I loved Cloris's dance.. It was fun and you could see they were just having fun..
Loved Rocco and Karina's dance too.. Looked like fun and loved the ending.. Very well done.. I hope he gets to stay cause he is really improving every week..

I've seen videos of Lacey competing in Latin, plus she did a nice samba routine when she was on SYTYCD. So I think her latin technique is okay. And her swing is outstanding; I hope she and Lance do a jive, and also it would be cool if Lacey can get her brother Benji on there to do a West Coast Swing with her.
I don't know if she's had much, if any, smooth training, but remember, that's the decision of the show's producers to hire her despite that. I read an interview where Lacey said DWTS recruited her for the show. Clearly it's a casting decision to fill some sort of "young and edgy" persona they want to have on the show.

I had figured as much, and I suppose it makes sense ratings-wise to do something a little different, but I just wish she could be "young and edgy" without thumbing her nose at the ballroom world. To me its like she's selling out all for the sake of good tv. But thats just me and I'll have to get over it, I suppose.
Anyone know who else will be on the results show tonight other than the Rockettes?
I agree with Angel_HI and anp73ga31.
As a viewer I believe ageism is quickly coming to the forefront in this competition. Lacey and Corky made for a deadly combination last night. Aren’t the producers sensitive to this? Surely it is not their intention to alienate an entire demographic?

I agree with you! I told my wife as it unfolded that it was embarrassing to watch that performace. The show is certainly a popularity contest and not a dance contest but I felt it was degrading to Cloris to do that routine. It seems to me Corky is more concerning with trying to show everyone how good he is/was and little to do with him presenting his partner in the best light possible.
