Salsa music mixed with other types of music

I've been hearing about salsa tunes mixed with hip-hop, cha-cha, merengue and other... lately about raggaeton from a friend in West Palm Beach FL... I've been watching salsa contests and shows where people mix music to perform the choreography... I saw The Salsa Kids dance some sort of choreography of salsa moves on music mixed with Michael Jackson...
Also, the shows and contests seem to be mixing salsa with many other types of music... it is valid for the dance, as wel... I saw salsa dance mixed with tango, hip hop, breakdance...
What do you guys and gals think about it?

I personally prefer traditional salsa, no mixtures... but that's me!

Same here squirrel. While I can appreciate what some people are trying to do with shows/performances, for me what makes salsa special is itself, salsa.

I like it, as long as its good. I like traditional things too. But, I also realise, all this ballroom style dancing, dance contests, salsa dance scene, 'salsero clothing' (based on unofficial rankings, etc.), etc. - none of this would be around if nobody would have broke traditions a long time ago (this includes spreading our music to non-latin people).

Heh, this stuff can hit me hard sometimes. When I play out (gigging), I just get so emotional when I see all sorts of people enjoying/dancing this music. It really makes us happy. Its true, bands get their inspiration/motivation from the audience (and yes, drinks too). I'm thankful that the music has spread this much. I just hope it gets bigger and better.

I've seen so many performances that I look for something different, there is just so much of the same I can take, so when I see a performance, and they mix in different types of music, I love it.

I finally get to see something different. I see it as *******ing... But, if you can give me an unique salsa only performance, then that is true beauty and no reason to mess with perfection.
