I'm not sure if this will take off but I realized there was no thread in which one could share and compare what we are doing in the evenings - the full range from competing through making easter eggs :) Since we don't always make the best use of our time I dare say it may be as informative to the writer as the reader. I searched DF for anything similar but did not find one (if there is please let me know). Tis a good time to start because I had a wonderful, if not particularlly dramatic evening.
Went dancing with P to the Westway club (East Toronto). Its a great place for both social and competitor mostly because of its size and the quality of the floor. If you go earl, as we always do, they play standard for the first hour (7-8) and there is generally 2 or three couples on the floor so you can go full out in a competition routine. Later it fills up and often there is a hosted studio - sometimes with 50 or more members that come so that the floor can be quite full. By 10 pm or so it starts to empty and one can again use the floor. In an evening you can do open routines for about 2 hours in total and the rest of the time social dancing is fine and you can always work on floorcraft and styling - not a bad practice session even for competitors.
The music is terrific - all strict timing and alternating between 3 standard and three latin with the occasional 3 line dances thrown in. There is complimentary coffee, a variety of teas and even hot chocolatet and at 9.30 pm they serve dinner (for real), all included for your 16$ entry fee. Last night was sausages (very tasty) with saurcraut and green salad...
A few pros turn up and last night Ed was there - I guess he's in his 70s but very sharp and still cuts the mustard with his wife. Ed has taken a liking to us and often gives us tips - aparently I am dragging my heel in too fast during heel turns - I'm sure he is right.

Grabbed some take-out Chinese for self and son and then headed over to studio for group hustle class followed by social / practice. I was late to hustle and walked in with another guy. We were greeted with applause b/c there was a major lack of men for the group class. Nice to be wanted!
Danced some FTs with NP in prep for showcase and pulled my back. I think I'm pulling her more than leading her. Not good and I don't know if it's me or her or both. Have to work on that.
Shuttle buddy P. made it for part of the social so I tried to dance mainly with her while she was there since it was her first visit to the studio.
Stopped by another studio for a little while after our social for theirs.
Came home and did a little light housecleaning.

Not a lot. Been too tired to do much dancing this week. Watched the Sox/Rays game. Did a bunch of work with one of my synths.
I finished a jewelry order and then practiced solo for an exhibition coming up soon.
Kinda' boring and lonely night. I thought Fridays were supposed to be party nights!

Last night I actually cooked something, and it didn't kill everyone in the house. Then I danced from probably about 7.30pm to midnight, came home, and slept until 1pm. :D
My partner and I were both worn out by the end of the night and only stayed dancing on energy from sugary foods and drink.

Finally managed to fix an outlet in the bathroom - the clue was there was no current in the wiring (bought a new-fangled probe that lights up when you are near a hot wire - not touching it, just near).
Went out to dinner w friend to a pub up the street - used to be so packed there you could not get in on a saturday, now its rather quiet (but nicer). Wonder what happened - specially as a lovely dinner for two was less than $50 including wine...

Drove to studio to watch showcase only to find out that it had been postponed until next week due to illness. Drove back to my end of town, browsed around a bit at the Halloween store. Went home, changed clothes, ordered some Chinese, swung by Blockbuster and picked up The Love Guru, picked up Chinese, and spend the rest of the evening knitting (got a baby blanket to finish up before the shower on the 25th), eating garlic beef, watching said movie (was kinda disappointing), and thwarting the drunken antics of my younger sister and two friends who are home from college for fall break.

Last night I was tangoing to neo-tango music interspersed with Golden age tandas; the brain wave of Steve Morrell who's Tangks have ended with wild nights of non-tango music with everyone letting down their hair, and he has observed that people listen more attentively to old tangos as a result.
So we had some Stones, Trust in Me ( cover from Jungle book! by sultry female singer)
Sur No Sur, Siddhartha from Buddha Lounge amongst Gotan, Bajofondo etc. etc.
Needless to say I was in my element... :)

Last night was Wed so thats practice night on the biiiiig floor. Left work early to work out in the studio first on these new routines - I was alone at first and then one of my favorite couples arived, they dance Senior 4 but he always jokes that at his age he should be in Senior 7. Actually, they are lovely dancers and a wonderful real life couple too.
Went for a quick eat at Dairy Crest - I like their chicken. This time had the 'Healthy Choice" which is one side and a chicken 'quarter' which is actually a leg or a breast) with vegetables. The latter were crunchy but totally tasteless except for a faint odor of clorine. Is it possible that they treat them for some reason?? The chicken tasted OK but had so much salt I had to wash it down with water. Mmmm good :(
Practice was terrific, DP was in great form, the music was lovely and the company too (about 6 couples on the biiiiig floor. Really could go all out.

Actually she said as we were talking in the wings " We're talking too much lets dance."
then on the dance floor I kept thinking about listening to the music.
I probably did as much talking as dancing last night, which is rare; as I normally dance and conversation is not my forte ( though I do sing along to the music quite unself-consciously)

And in a different corner you could hear my cats snoring.
You have ships on wallpaper or in your mind? :D
I just remembered why my head is hurting still - I wacked it on the wall in bed last night. I need a woman's arm to snooze on! :)

Consequently spent rest of night looking for two songs (contrasting music theatre styles), and a 2 minute monologue. No luck on either count yet. If anyone's got any suggestions!?

fantastic - just wish the day was not interupted by work :) (actually that is going well too so I'm on a bit of a roll)
The highlight was playing for my son's wedding - he got married about 3 weeks ago in a 12C church located in a small vilage in france about 10 miles from Geneva (where my daughter-in-law's sister lives). Twas the absolute fantasy wedding that would also have made an incredible movie (e.g. the morning of the church priest told the happy couple that they could not use the (catholic) church because the service was going to be led by a woman... many tears later that was solved).
They arranged for an excellent accompanist and I played two pieces - Meditations from Thais and Ave Maria (the Gounod version). I can't claim perfection (its a bit nerve wracking!) but I don't think there were many unmoved by at least the notion - its pretty special to play at your own childs wedding.
ThisIsNotMe
10-17-2008, 02:09 AM
Wow, that is special! And what a story...silly not letting them have the wedding in the catholic church, though. It sounds beautiful! I bet you played terrifically (hmm, is that even a word?). And even if it wasn't perfect, you know what they say, so long as you keep going, the audience isn't even going to notice. :D
elisedance
10-17-2008, 02:32 AM
Oh, I didn't finish that part of the story - the wedding went on as planned after the Bishop interceded and said it was OK as long as the (female) priest did not go into the altar region. Everyone was happy (which pretty much describes the whole event :)
You are right about the going on thing - when I play in front of an audience I seem to make constant mistakes and yet when you hear a recording of the same performance it sounds pretty good. I suppose the mind exagerates the errors when you are focusing hard - also things that sound bad really near an instrument (or voice I suppose) often do not carry out to the audience.
ThisIsNotMe
10-17-2008, 02:37 AM
That's great that it all went on then, sounds like there was a bit of drama though!
Going on...I learned that the hard way. When I did a lot of performing on the piano (haven't done much of that for about a year), I used to make so many horrible (I thought) mistakes. And while I didn't stop, I'd usually make some sort of a face, or grimace or something, and that was usually what gave away the mistakes, not the mistakes themselves.
elisedance
10-17-2008, 03:11 AM
Same goes for dancing of course - maybe more so. If you just carry on you can pretend that it was intentional and everyone will miss it unless they were looking directly at you. If however, you stop, stamp your foot, yell a thousand curses and protest angrily at your partner there is usually a quite different outcome :)
It was only my second recital since taking the instrument up again after 40 years hiatus. So, I'm still a bit performance rusty! I think ballroom competition helped me quite a bit to settle the nerves though - unlike public speaking when I did my first ballroom comp - twas next to useless.
Lessee, last night I spent on DF!

Mostly nursed headache in bed last night, but at one point threw on pashmina and went for long thoughtful & meditative walk through town. It was so beautiful...no one was out, the town is all decorated for Halloween festivities (tonight is the first night for this year's Haunted Mill). The moon was still shining nearly full and the stars were out. Stood on the bridge crossing the falls for a long time...looked in the quaint shop windows...enjoyed the cool breeze & fresh air. Quietly thanked the town for a good run while living here...

The nicest thing was that there were no contractors of any kind. Everything was done by family - from arranging the flowers in the church to cooking for 80 people (an awesome feat pulled of by daughter-in-law). My contribution just fit perfectly into that. Even the accompanist was an old friend of the family. Of course that all required several days of collaboration and months of planning. This gave it a real 'village' feell, quite different from the more contracted events I'm more used to (although they can obviously be just as special).

No sleeping at all. :-?
Went to a happy hour hosted by one of the local Meetup.com groups here in DC. Got there on the late side and saw some friends I hadn't seen in a few weeks. Then left that a bit early (as it was loud and I'm still in my "I'm not here to dance" phase) and joined 2 friends in Dupont Circle at a sushi place. Ate some great food there and had some good conversations about the planning for an upcoming birthday celebration next week.
On the downside, I managed to lose my work BlackBerry and security key/badge on the Metro rail system on my way home. That sucked but sometimes ---- happens and you just deal with it. Have a replacement key and badge already and have sent off my check to my employer to cover the cost of my new unit which I'm setting up now. Sure, it may turn up in the Lost & Found for Metro, where I've reported it, but at the same time I'm prepared for the possibility that it won't.

Good party though, and showcase went pretty well. favorite part though was probalby teaching waltz to a newer student. Nothing special, just went over box and progressive. Went out to an art studio tour in a distant GTA neighbourhood. Love to see art created by determined and often part time artists - the best stuff is created by those who just have to do it. Of course, so is the worst!! The weirdest is going into one studio with fabulous sculptures made in natural stone (soapstone, serpentine) ranging from $0.3 to 1.5K, but not one sold and then you go into another with the most awful attempts at painting - but with a similar price range and sold stickers all over the place. [Though on second thoughts I perhaps they were 'teaser' sold signs...]. Found some neat stuff but nothing that really 'bonded'.
Spent the rest of the evening cooking for self and friend and playing the violin...

LOL... As much as I love pro... and LOVE dancing... and there isn't much I wouldn't do to keep this hobby...
This is part of that bit that I not only wouldn't...but couldn't do... It's not so much the offer as the being indebted to someone... it just ain't gonna happen...
... the conversation ended with him saying "Well, ok... NO one has ever said no to me and I believed them... *shrug*... I'll still take you dancing anytime you want." ;)
which leaves me with the thought.... DANG... I just lost my first possible social dance partner...

Went to Harvest Moon Comp... Nice night... A fellow student was there, asked me to salsa during general dancing...it was fun... I've always liked dancing with him... after the dance... the conversation made a sharp left...and I had no warning...
By the end of it I was offered 2 comps of my choosing and 1,000 lessons w/ my pro if I would *ahem* spend time with (fellow student)!!!! I felt like I was in a movie!!! ... I told him I don't have a price... he said he doesn't take no for an answer... everyone has their price... I told him there's a first time for everything...and honey... I'm priceless.
Do you have a link to the eBay auction? What a banana. I'd rather watch Dirty Dancing 1000 times if I were in your shoes...

Thanks Fasc... This conversation actually happened within earshot of one of the pros... She didn't seem surprised...when I asked her later if she heard. I think they're already aware of his tendencies... It was very strange... very matter of fact... it didn't feel icky... it felt like a business transaction that I wasn't interested in... very trippy.

i hear ya. as for being exploited...that's what people do to the powerless. and aside from children, the elderly, and the systematically impoverished, i prefer to think that everyone has power to work their lives in a direction that suits them

Last night I spent 2 hrs at the studio trying to learn routines, tis not easy (pro is away for a week). I had taped bits of them (on my digital camera which takes about 2 minutes at a time of about 2/3rds of the floor) so this helped but as I had not recorded much sound I found it oddly hard to tell what was what. I have to admit that some of the segments I was even having a hard time telling which dance I was looking at (mostly waltz or foxtrot) - open steps without sound are not that different!

If you think the re-make is scary check out the original Japanese 'Ringu'. I couldn't sleep properly for months.
The cursed video on the original is creepy enough... the music in particular is a lot 'darker' in comparison and makes me hide under the covers... Sadako is far far scarier than Samara.

not sure solutions for you, maybe try to hang out in dancing studio as much as possible or be with friends as much as possible or do something else just to keep your mind pre-occupied with other things so you'll not think about it. or go to a friends house while your DH is away?

Stuck around and chatted for awhile after lesson (which went long by about 15 minutes), then headed home. The problem with burning the candle at both ends is that it can catch up with you. A lack of sleep or a temporary bout of feeling under the weather where you think you're getting sick but you're actually not. Hope you're getting enough rest during all of this.
