The other night I was talking to someone and somehow the topic of hustle variations came up. What piqued my interest, though, was the mention of single time Hustle and the comment that it was like merengue. What variations of hustle do you know? Is there such a thing as single time Hustle and if so is it analagous to merengue? Can someone describe the steps to me, or knows of any clips on the web I can see?

covers it pretty well. i was just talking about hustle last night - on the west coast in the 70's it was more a variant of WCS compared to the NY hustle that is more commonly done in LA nowadays. as i stated in another thread, i think you'll find that NY hustle & salsa look very similar in terms of the figures executed.

in a recent class i saw the instructor initially taught it as a four count step and added the syncopation later in the class just to improve the slope (differential for all you math majors & engineers) of the learning curve. i think the quintessential NY hustle song is "i will survive" by gloria gainer (sp?)

hope this helps.

What does the 70's west coast hustle look like?

I think it's Gaynor, although I could be wrong.

It does. Basically I can do anything and say that I'm doing the hustle. I learnt one of the two types of the rope hustle is a variation of merengue and that if I don't do any recognizable hustle moves, borrowing moves from other dances I just call it street hustle. That works. :)

my friend (who is old enought to have been dancing back then) described it briefly last night but i don't recall exactly, except it looked more like WCS - which probably doesn't help since nobody seems to do WCS on the east coast...

i knew the spelling didn't look right but i was on my way out the door (as i am again).
