Best wishes to both of them.

Jeez, could we have some more HAPPY news around here?

Valentin and Valeriya split.
Pasha and Elijah split a few weeks ago.
Austin and Liza split a few week ago. (One of the top jr 10 dance couples.)
Tal and Kate split a few months ago.

(All according to dancesportinfo.)

These are all couples I loved to watch! While I'm sure many of these dancers will come back in new and exciting permutations, right now it seems like so much of the news is about break ups.

I hope there will be at least a couple exciting new pairings that we don't know about yet at Ohio.

I always have a hard time understanding why couples that do so well together decide to call it quits when they're at the top of their game. I know that there are a lot of things that factor into a good partnership besides dancing ability (respect, compromise, dedication, etc.), but I still find myself saying "Awww, what a shame!" when a high-ranking couple splits up. I always wonder what went wrong

Really? And I loved watching these two so much...they had such great chemistry together.

What makes a couple call it quits? I'm always so surprised and confused when a couple who do really well together all of a sudden announce a split.

Yes I agree, I think it is the Intense pressure and the commitment it burns people out, there needs to be a balance.

I know people who have dance comp for years and now wont go near the dance floor, and yet they loved it that is why they started competing.

Could be that they have learnt as much from each other that they need to move on a new partnership especially if there is no romantic involvement.

My opinion only btw :-)

:( Why on earth would someone keep a partnership together, just because they are successful at dance, when there are other factors that may be less successful between the two of them...

And until either of them issues a statement addressing their reasons we should not speculate.

sometimes good dancing isn't enough...that is certain...as in all cases, I hope their transition will be gentle and minimally painful

Agreed Larinda. I actually feel bad for those who seem to think that dance results are the be all and end all of partnership and life decisions as that is ultimately a very unrewarding path to tread.

Because for a lot of couples that's what the partnership is all about: results.
I guess it makes sense in many cases to try to minimise "other factors", and concentrate on dancing, and keep a successful partnership going... then either an equilibrium is reached eventually, or the partnership ends at some point anyway..

But no partnership is based on just results.... NO partnership. Even if that is what people say. No parntership can survive on that alone when any of these can make splitting a more attractive option.

Potential New Partners
Distance
Commitment
Personality
Money
Love
Coaches
Travel Opportunity
Job Requirements
Family/Home/School Requirements
Future Plans

ALl of these apply to ANY partnership. And it is a delicate balance to make them work. Success is just ONE of MANY things, and it ultimatley is not the answer. Even if a couple is NOT involved off the dance floor, and it is purely a business relationship, the above factors are averaged in.

One possible explanation hasn't been mentioned. Why not go out while you're on top?

Think of pro athletes who were superstars but wound being has-beens and slammed by former fans. Or winning coaches who walked after winning a SuperBowl or World Series, etc. Or CEOs who bail when their company is the 800 pound gorilla.

Dynasties rise and dynasties fall. Better to go out with a winning record than hearing people say "Oh, they were so good, what happened to them?", neh?

Just another (perhaps less likely) possibility.

That's not, IMO, the case with Val and Val. They had huge potential to be world am finalists (they were already knockingon the door of that final) and were, generally, still growing. Yes, they were on top in the US, but there is a big, bad world of international dance that they had the chance to conquer. I am not at all convinced that they had reached their potential together.

My guess is one wanted to turn pro and the other didn't. Breaks up partnerships like nobody's business:)

What a shame! I saw Val & Val perform at a showcase at my studio. They were so wonderful to watch.
