Anyone else appalled at the amount of money spent on the truly mediocre Macy's production? Sheesh.

I didn't like it. It seemed mostly hip-hop to me. Not so much dancing through the ages. Way too much hype.

I also wasn't the biggest fan for the pro's dancing to the musical guest tonight. Seemed a bit hectic to me.

I think this is just funny timing....just a week or so ago, I compared my jive to the dancing of Michael Flatley. For his genre, he is great, but seriously, my jive should not look like his genre! ;)

This is what happens when you try to dance Jive to Lindy Hop. Got a big "I told you so" from my coach tonight about this. We had a discussion last night (after seeing two Lindy Hop routines and no Jitterbug) and I was thinking it was possible to pull off a Jive to this music... Nope. http://www.clicksmilies.com/s1106/aetsch/cheeky-smiley-028.gif

I... love... the Brian Setzer Orchestra. Was so sad to see only one number played. :(

Oh and did anybody catch Len's remark about never being able to give a 10 to a "Jitterbug"? Oh yeah. He is so on my list.

Was it ambitious? Yes. Were there some talented dancers in there? Looked like there were a few. Did I feel anything from it? Not at all. It left me cold.:-|

I think the only Macy's routines that I enjoyed were the Wade Robson and Cirque du Soleil presentations. Everything else, to the best of my memory, has been kinda 'eh'.

When I heard the description of the event, I actually looked forward to it - D'oh

It was amateurish - oh wait a minute, I didn't mean to insult the hard-working Amateurs who do better on a daily basis (yes, there were a couple very talented kids highlighted, but that's different than was advertized).

Quit insulting the public.

The Brian Setzer orchestra was great.

Agreed on those 2, exactly, but would add the Rockettes to the A List.

It's probably some kind of corporate tie-in or promotion. Does he have anything new or sort of new coming up? That might explain his presence.

Ditto about Michael Flatley. I was actually getting kinda excited about the possibility of the mystery judge being Paula Abdul :( I haven't heard his name in the mainstream for years...and I doubt he has any kind of ballroom experience. So much for credibility on the judging panel next week...

Brian Setzer rocked, but man, that jive by Louis & Karina was the most frenzied jive I've ever seen. He actually missed a couple leads because they were trying to keep up with the music. I would have rather seen some Lindy with music that fast, or better yet - no dancing at all. Brian has such stage presence that you don't need dancers to entertain the audience during his performance!

The big Stars of Dance performance was a let-down. I think they invested more time and money on the set and costumes than they did on the choreography.

Any predictions on who is dancing what next week? It's gonna be a mixed bag - basically it could be any dance that each individual couple didn't get to dance from weeks 1-4. According to wikipedia (which has been wrong pretty often this season, so I take it with a grain of salt), Lance & Lacey are doing the jive, and Maurice & Cheryl are doing the Viennese waltz. I tend to believe the latter, since they have only danced one standard dance the whole season (the foxtrot in week 1). Other than that, I have no clue...

I don't know if Paula would be any better. Does she have any ballroom experience? Mary Murphy would have been fun. Actually, I was really hoping for Nick Kosovich!

ditto. Two of my favorite dancers to watch but I had a hard time looking at that jive...you just don't see the total quality of the movements when it is that frenzied. I'd have asked the band to slow it down just a *wee* bit.

And bummer about Julianne. Hope she's okay!

I love Brian Setzer too!! But the music and the dancing looked sped up.. Even my dh commented that it didn't sound right.. It sounded like they were in a hurry to finish.. But all in all that was one of the best musical guests they've had on so far....

They don't judge/score/give feedback on the group numbers...really more than anything, it's just a fun little time-filling ditty for when the number of couples dwindles down low enough that they can't fill their 1.5 hour time slot. At least that's how I remember it from previous seasons.

I think that the show is really starting to suck, or maybe it's just geting on my nerves.

Lacey was the only one who did do WCS, and Lance did as good as he could - it takes years to get that dance under your belt! He did OK!

The judges knocked Lacey for presenting herself too much, but isn't that what the dance is all about? That is what I was told to do: present the woman (follower). Even when I was doing Pro-Am, my Pro instructed me to present her, and I get scored on how well I could do that. Yes, I did have specific patterns that let my dance abilities come through, but I always presented her to the audience/judges. I still present the follower 100% of the time - even if I get my showoff moves in. I know some of you will disagree with what I just wrote . . . but it's what I learned! Honest!

The second couple (???names - Toni and Alec???) . . . was that a WCS? I think I saw some semblance of a single basic . . . the rest was downright terrible. Terrible is too good of a word for it!

And the judges didn't say a word, in fact, they praised them. But I think the voters saw through all of that. Shame on the judging for that show.

Growing up, doing the Jitterbug with my Mom . . . that was some great Lindy Hop dancing instead of a Jitterbug.

:applause: I'm not a fan of Lacey's BR, but she "is" WCS. I agree that the pros should not outdance their partners, but I also know that they are there to make the celebs look good. I agree w/ you in that I think that the researchers/producers on this show are lacking tremendously. The judges should be a little more informed sometimes.

Growing up, doing the Jitterbug with my Mom . . . that was some great Lindy Hop dancing instead of a Jitterbug.

Bravo, encore! :applause: Another pet peeve of mine...the lack of knowledge/study by many of today's generation of pros. Tom Bergeron announced that the pros were learning these dances also. Call me old school...I'm not...but, I know what these dances are. As a BR dance teacher, it is my job to know what these dances are.

To their defenses, the music was Lindy. They couldn't have done Jitterbug to it had they wanted to. And, both of the dances (Julianne/partner and Derek/partner) were really good.

I don't know why they didn't just bring in some guest choreographers to help out the pros who don't know the dances, as long as they are copying SYTYCD.

If the producers don't take dancing seriously, neither do the viewers, who will be more and more inclined to see this as just a popularity contest.

Btw, the thread title should be corrected to "Week 5", and so should another "Week 6" thread.

Getting back on the judges' being a bit too harsh on Lacey topic, I spotted this over at:

Defending the New Kid: Lance Bass may have survived a slip, but the former boy bander wasn’t about to take the judges’ harsh criticism of his partner, newcomer Lacey Schwimmer, laying down. “It was almost a pre-meditated attack, the way that the three of them seemed to know exactly what to say before we even danced,” Bass said of his partner’s verbal paddling. Bass went on to question the judges’ notion that Lacey, the reigning West Coast swing champion, should have eased up on the complexity of the dance so that he could shine. “Why would you dumb yourself down during any kind of performance?” Bass asked in disbelief. “If you’re a pro or if you’re a celebrity, you’re always going to perform your best, perform your heart out, and that’s what we did.”

Though she had her ballroom game face on, Schwimmer admitted the judges’ criticism cut deep. “It was a little hurtful, and to be honest, it kind of got my spirits down,” she said. “I created a dance that I felt was at his level. And to be fair, I know what West Coast swing is and the judges don’t have training in it.” And most of the pros agreed the judges had it out for the new girl.

“Lacey is an amazing dancer,” pro Kym Johnson said, “Maybe for one judge to have said something, I could understand, but for all of them to do that? It made me feel really bad for her, because I think they were too hard on her.” “The judges smashed her pretty hard,” agreed DWTS champ Cheryl Burke, “To have three of the judges pile on you like that? I thought it was a little too much.”

I belive that one of the judges has had a dislike for Lacey right from the beginning.. It's very obvious to me so didn't anyone else see it?
I am loosing any respect i had for the judges very very quickly..
As a rebel myself i hope that Lance and Lacey stay till the end...

Very true...it was only after that terrible paso and lukewarm Viennese that Lacey knocked out a tango worthy of the week's encore. Lacey does seem to have an above-average skill level in jive, as evidenced by her many jive-step filled solos on SYTYCD...so she and Lance will probably be the come-back kids this coming week.

I am WAAYYYYYY pumped about Brooke & Derek's rumba, though. Derek always comes up with the most sensuous choreography, and Brooke seems like his most self-secure and comfortable partner yet. I daresay there is one reason I'm glad Len is gone next week - he would probably think it was "too erotic". I say BRING IT ON!!! ;)

Apparently Warren & Kym are doing rumba as well...although I think theirs will come across as less sensual and more comical :)
