my dance partner has bought one of these tops - dancesport-international.com/?action=showdetail&sid=9hbps6jf5gsev43087f6j0cij6&prod_id=4035
and to make it a bit more special on the comp floor we want to stone it - have decided on a preciosa vitrail green stones - paln is for a subtle a sort of self coloured design.
I've seen some great examples of mens shirts/tops stoned but can't remember where or if I can can't located the pictures anymore.
have had a look through the photo album here - but it's a veyr slow process so wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of some photos or clips with interesting tops/shirts...
also any advice about how to actually apply the stones - do I need to have somesort of body in the shirt or will it be ok to do it flat?

I use E6000 (Industrial Strength) glue to reapply stones to my DP's dresses. Don't need a body in it, and I use and artist/painters knife to apply the glue to the stone. Don't wimp out on the stones, get the good ones... they're worth it.

There are lots of old threads on stoning that talk about various ways to apply stones. Try searching "rhinestones" and "stoning." One of the most popular ways to apply stones is to use a birthday candle to pick up the stone and dip it in a little puddle of glue (Gemtac is another good glue), then press the stone on the fabric.
You only need a body or form under the shirt if it is stretchy and the design you choose would be altered when the garment is worn. But if you'll be stoning fabric with another layer of fabric under it (like a sleeve or a pull-over shirt), you may want to put a layer of plastic wrap between the layers of fabric so you don't glue them together.
^^I'd second that except that instead of dipping the stone in glue, use a toothpick to dot the fabric, then the candle to pick up the stone and drop it on there.

agree - I always put the glue on the fabric, and then place the stone on the glue.

I know how to stone - have done quite a bit of it now - but always dresses - skirt hem or replacing stones lost stones from exsisting design.
I'm lookiing for design ideas for this top - dancesport-international.com/?action=showdetail&sid=9hbps6jf5gsev43087f6j0cij6& prod_id=4035
am slowly but surely plowing through lots of ballroom photos looking for inspiration but it is slow going and thought people here my have some fav's to share.
the top is very stretchy so guess I'm going to put some sort of form in it if I don't want all the stones popping off when my dance partner puts it on - might just make him wear it while I do it LOL

What's the aim of putting stones btw? Building an armour against the other couples on the floor?
What's your dress look like? I'd go with something that complements the lines of the dress.

Just to give a bit more interest to his costume – bit more glitz and glamour

The top is to be worn primarily with a red and gold kilt – I have a matching mini kilt and wear a black short boned top that I have added some stoned lace too and set of cuffs and collar in red. If I can find a photo from our last comp will post it...
But also want to be able to used his top with blue kilts and other kilts he has that he wears when I wear other outfits.
If it were my shirt, I would stone it in black hematite. Just keep it simple, give it some sparkle, and match several of your costumes.

haven't had time the last couple of days to look through photos online to find inspiration - hoping for bad weather on Sunday so good excuse to sit on the sofa with computer and go hunting

I am NOT a fan of stones on men's tops in general. That being said, only one I've really liked was a jordi that was stoned too match the woman's dress, color and pattern wsie (was one of their sponsored couples, so dress and shirt were made to match).
IMO stones are OK if they match the fabric, or are not too obvious (crystal AB on a black top would be a bit obvious). The Jet-on-black look works for me.

As far as having a body in it, do you have a dress form? You could theoretcially use that to hang it on. If it isn't tight enough, you could clip it on the side you weren't working on to stretch it tight. The you could leave it up and take your time doing it.
I noticed that the shirt almost has a reflective property to it that seems to give the shirt a color to it. Very interesting. Or is the shirt not actually black?
Just a thought.
Or you could stuff it with a pillow. But no matter what you put in it, put some waxed paper, or plastic bags or something between the filling and the fabric, because otherwise the glue will seep through and stick to the filler.

Just a thought.the tops in the picture are double mesh so they are coloured - my dance partners is just plain black DSI crepe
