Hhmm, nice picture but definitely strange.

Plenty other art out there relating to dance (especially Degas of course), any other input?

It may be strange, but I've seen that exact print in at least four different ballroom dance studios. *shrug*

I've seen that somewhere before, but can't think of where. :?

Yeah, I've seen that one a lot too. Interesting promenade.

I have seen this print, in a department store named "Kohl's". I almost bought it as a matter of fact!

I'm pretty sure there's a post in the Ads forum, where this print is for sale. :D

I got that one as a gift once - it's kind of strange, I guess, but I like it. I never did know the name of it. I think that same artist has one or two more that are similar to this one.

But why does anything have to be wrong - maybe she's leading! :)

Vettriano has several prints of ballroom poses. There is another by Vettriano that no one has seen yet called "Ballroom Spy". The print is not for sale yet but is a behind the scenes look at a competitor.

What's with the umbrellas :?:

I like the way that the man is in a ballroom hold except that he is in the opposite position. He hasn't swapped roles, just positions.

Try it.

I practice follow occassionally and find it okay (not great), but to dance like this is hard. Mirror image dancing.

Maybe they're dancing a "singing in the rain" routine???

Before I was taking regular dance lessons I liked this picture more. Now, I wonder how the artist came to create it. I want to research this picture to see what info is available.

Have you seen the movie? Not the best as movies go, but a couple of nice dance routines. Especially the one with Donald O'Connor thrashing about on the floor, running on the walls and making funny faces. A must-see scene!

There also is one romantic scene where Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds dances around in a big studio, and this painting actually reminded me of this scene. However, I distinctly rember not seeing any butlers or other people with umbrellas running around in that scene. :)

Care and I are very firm believers in Feng Shui. Our Master Bedroom decorationg theme, is, of course, dance.

According to the 'laws' of Feng Shui, we needed something red on one of our walls in that room, although nothing else in the room is red.

So, guess what we now have in the room??? Yep, a very large version of that print, plus the rest of Vettriano's dance collection. We love them.

Oh, and the picture . . . the position . . . Vettriano is a contemporary artist, and didn't start painting until 1972. Although I'm guessing, many of todays' artists paint from a negative of a picture taken with a camera . . . think about it! Not knowing much about dance, he painted what he saw????????

One of the leaders I sometimes dance with does this little trick (in salsa), rotating clockwise for a couple of measures in this position and joking "now you're leading" (although I'm not). Felt really strange the first time but I quite like it now.
(Cross body lead on the "wrong" side is another of his little tricks, and that one feels stranger.)

From what I read, he did the mirror image deliberately making some artistic statement about dominance, power and subtle imterplays.

Not being artistic (closer to being autistic),
I dunno'

Oh what a bummer if he really did paint the wrong side of a negative, but if it was deliberate...well, I will re-think this. My curiousity is increasing.

And what a neat idea, opposite side cross body leads! Sounds ... challenging! I'll find some one who will be willing to try something like this and give it a try.

This piece is by Vettriano. He did three. Google it and find many sources for prints. I understand the prints on canvas are fantastic.

(concerning the pose, maybe she just has a strong back lead :) )

I'm saving up for these three

dance prints - canvas, cropped, brush strokes, unframed Barewalls.com
- - Vettriano 'The Singing Butler' - 26.8x34 - $177.96
- - Vettriano 'Dance Me to the End of Love' - 37x27 - $182.57
- - Vettriano 'Waltzers' - 22"x18.5" - $129.96

He actually has quite a few, but as far as I can see, it looks like 4 "dance" pictures . . . one not mentioned is "Dancer for Money."

Anyone interested just google Vettriano art . . .

but not with someone who's disabled. unfortunately it didn't occur to me until my friend decided he needed to leave midway through the video. i felt like such an idiot afterwards.

and yeah, i can name at least 10 people who have this as a poster, book bag/whatever. there's another potential niche - ballroom dance posters!
better yet, a service where you can superimpose your own face into a 24"x36" framable poster!

Yes, tsb. I can relate. I used to have a coworker who was hearing impaired, and it raised my sensitivity so much. He was great -- not at all shy about telling me to speak up. (An aside: I think I'll email him. What a great guy! 8) ) It's amazing how many things we take for granted, when we don't have physical, mantal or emotional challenges to deal with. Not everybody's so lucky.

And about the ballroom/dance business ideas. I've been thinking about this as well. I think there's already a thread. I'lltry to find and resurrect it. :D

another thought; bumper stickers that say:

"how's my dancing?"
call 1-800-_______"

where the blank could be "BOOGIE", "TANGO", "FOXTROT", etc.

(and put the studio name in small print at the bottom)

Some friends of mine from dancing have a big print of that piece in their living room. When I first saw it, it really bugged me that the couple had their hold the wrong way around! Now you find the print in shops all around town, and you can buy greeting cards with similar artworks on them, and most of them have it oriented the other way so that the hold looks correct. So I'm with Vince A on this one - I thought that it was a photo-negative thing, an accident that he wasn't aware of. It never occured to me that he did on purpose to make a statement. If he did, then unfortunately someone out there who is making prints of his work has undone his message by printing them with the correct hold!
