To La La Lindy Lovers,
Lindy Historian Extraordinaire!
Terry Monaghan, our leading Lindy Historian is the Impresario of the London 'Jiving Lindy Hoppers', a world traveling musical Lindy dancing troop for over the last decade. At a luncheon last week at Bucca di Bebbe's,
Terry and I got to talking about the dance scene in New York during the 1950's which I was familiar with since I often visited my family there during those years. When I explained how Swing dancing had been virtually replaced in New York City by the Latin dances and mentioned 'Crazy Joe' as one of the leading Latin dance teachers in 1952, Terry politely supplied me with then correct name, "Killer Joe". Terry was a preteener living in London in the 1950's. But this is just a minor example of Monaghan's encyclopedic knowledge of Lindy History. Three years ago he telephoned me for the first time, and told me that he had been trying to track me down for several years as part of his intensive research endeavors. Fortunately, Jean Phelps Veloz of "Groovy Movie" and "Swing Fever" fame gave Terry my phone number.
From Terry, I also resolved another Lindy mystery; 'why the Europeans ended up dancing 'Classic Lindy' Style instead of 'West Coast Swing':
"Don't Knock the Rock" was the 1957 film that first appeared in Europe over a decade ago, and was the impetus that created the Lindy Craze in Europe. And it was the style in that film, "Don't Knock the Rock" that the European dancers began to imitate, which happen to be Classic Lindy!. (I know because I was there...again!)
On the other hand, the Swing movies of the 1940's became popular in Southern California, about the same time as DKTR in Europe, and the dancers in Southern California naturally imitated the dancers in the 1940's films who happened to be dancing 'West Coast Swing'.
Just thought you'd like to know that tid bit of Lindy History, thanks to Terry Monaghan, Lindy Historian Extraordinaire! Email: terrymonaghan@yahoo.com Check his extraordinaire Lindy Video! What a trip!
