View Full Version : Wax on, wax off??

Inspired by this thread http://www.dance-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=3331&start=28 mentioning (competition) dancers waxing their chest.
So; a two part poll to ascertain the feeling of the DF'ers on the subject.
And ofcourse, any nice stories greatly appreciated.
And i'll kick off to get things started;
I have a fair amount of chest hair, clothing will vary when I go dancing, but sometimes i'll wear a shirt with the top 2, 3 buttons undone, showing a little hair. And I have gotten some direct response on the subject from the opposite gender, so far always in very similar, and very amusing, ways; the girl will point it out and say something along the lines of "Hmm, shouldn't you button up??" whilst, invariably, at the same time copping a feel.
So for now I'll show a little hair from time to time.

Somewhere between one and two. Hairy chest, but don't flaunt it. Neither do I hide it.
It's just there, and I don't think about it and wether it's showing or not.
When it comes to plucking, waxing and stuff.... it's a waste of time and money (and I think it's a very feminine thing to do).

Actually, I always believed it was the opposite. When a guy is single (and possibly desperate) he would be much more tempted to go to extreme measures, and maybe let lifestyle magazines fool him into thinking all girls hate body hair.

Neither do hairy dancers (if they're good)
Hairless bodies are nice. Nothing wrong with it. But too me it's all wrong (priority wise) spending a lot of time and money on it, Especially since its nothing wrong with some hairs either.
And just like I think smooth and firm eighteen year old girls are just beautiful :P , but tend to prefer girls/women closer to my own age (I'm thirty one), I think few women mind a hairless chest but still some prefer hairs because it feels more manly and mature in some sense. It depends a lot of age though.
(Or maybe the girls who told me they prefered hair, just lied to me in order not to hurt me  )

Well, sure I enjoy dancing with "young people" as much as I enjoy dancing with "seasoned citizens". But I think I just like dancing in general to not worry about a full body Nair dip. ;)

Hmmm.... I was talking more in general. On the dance floor, the most important thing is to smile, have fun and find that good connection. :D
Of course, getting close to a nice well shaped body is cool too. 8) But, that is actually secondary. (Yes, I mean it!) And anyays, when doing lindy I normally don't do much rubbing up against the girls anyway.

WHAT? Guys really WAX? Gross, bigtime! What's wrong with the hair? I prefer guys with at least SOME hair on their chests!!! In Japan, women ABHOR chest hair on men, and sometimes even force their guys to go in for hair removal, etc(then again, most women here prefer skinny and "pretty" emasculine-looking men.! YUCK!) Show what you were born with, guys! I think hair makes a man look even MORE masculine! :D

Funny topic  !
I'd say depends. Just like facial hair, or wearing long hair (on your head, that is  ), hairy chest suits some guys more than others. It's a combination of personal style/personality.
It's also a cultrual thing I guess. The most obvious example, in general, the Western society we live in today would NOT generally consider a woman well-groomed/attractive if she lets her leg/arm-pit hair grow al natruale. Yet in other cultures, the removal of such hair for women is considered un-healthy/barberic  !
Now guys, how many of you actually prefer girls who leave their body hair in their natrual state....?
*Disclaimer: I am merely making a point. I conform to the common practice of body hair removal, just incase any of you get mental pictures  *

Prefer? I almost never notice women with hairy underarms or legs - mostly because all the women around here seem to shave regularly. I do however, prefer the non-leg and non-underarm hair to be au naturale.
Ok, so guys chest hair is open for debate. What about guys with rugs on their neck and backs? How do you feel about that?

Then again, besides the face some parts of my body do get shaven/trimmed on a regular basis (i'll spare you all the details), and I'm willing to bet that in most places I have a much higher hair density then you gals, not to mention certain areas that require a very gentle touch indeed.

Maybe it's my background as a cyclist. Maybe it's because I spend enough time in the gym that I see lots of guys without hair, but I've gotten to think guys -- athletes and dancers -- look better without the hair, even on the legs (even though the legs don't show on male dancers).
I don't go overboard on it. In the winter I let it grow but in the summer months I like to be hairless on my chest, back and legs. In my view, a muscular body looks better without hair. My wife thinks so too. I'm not built like one of those bodybuilder types, but I'm pretty lean and sinewy and I just think my body looks better when I shave/wax/whatever. But I suppose different women have different tastes, so I'm aware that some would disagree. I just want to impress my wife, anyway.

Wow! This site is getting kinky!
I shave my legs just because it feels better and stockings don't get caught on stubble! Don't care for that "Parisian look" with bushy pits, either.
As for eyebrows, I had electrolysis so I don't have to worry about plucking hair. I don't like the idea of eyebrow pencil, either. What a hassle! Is the current trend in western countries for super-thin, sppoky-looking eyebrows, or is just in Asia? Over here, women practically shave them off and then draw them on. (Which is the reason Japanese girls don't like camping! No make-up?! Omigawd!!!!)

It seems to me that the more the girls spend time on their appearance, the higher the probability of destroyed eyebrows.
I say that because this thin eyebrows often go with girls who style them selves in a lot of other ways too, like fancy clothes, lots of make-up etc.
I'm a man who likes the natural look over the make-up look, and ... think about this girls ... I really prefer my woman to spend an extra half an hour in bed with me, rather than in front of the mirror each morning!

I know what you mean, Flat Shoes. I like the natural look for brows, so I basically just get rid of stray hairs, as you said.
So this one day, I went to the hair salon, and got my hair done and eyebrows trimmed. Then I got into the car and drove directly to the nail salon, where the stylist took one look at me and said, "You are going to get your brows done too, right?" Get what done to them? Have them surgically removed? People take things too far, sometimes, I think. :?

My skin is pretty sensitive, so when I wax too often it breaks out (you'd think I was 20 years younger!). So I kind of switch from one thing to another. Shaving has to happen so often it's my least favorite (and my wife complains about the "stubble" effect" after a couple of days). So it's either waxing or male sugaring gel, or that wonderful product no guy wants to talk about but that most male cyclists use: Nair.
pygmalion
04-28-2004, 02:16 PM
Yup. Good old depilatories are the least painful bet. And these days, there are some formulations out there that aren't too smelly.
Waxing is horrific, and I try to avoid it if at all possible. Even my eyebrows, I either have trimmed by hand with a razor blade (the old fashioned way  ) or threaded (an ancient technique used by Indian and Pakistani women), and neither of those methods hurts at all.
salsachinita
04-28-2004, 02:29 PM
Anybody tried epilators...? Those getdget thingies with a few hundred tiny tweezers rotating?
I am allergic to wax & Nair, and simply refused to shave. So apart from real tweezers, I use the closest substitude.
Having said that, I'm not very hairy, so there's usually not that much to do :P !

04-28-2004, 02:41 PM
If there's an Indian expatriot community where you are, I highly recommend threading. It's truly threading, done with thread, held tight between the hands of the stylist/practitioner. Effective, cheap, quick and painless. :D

That's my preferred method. Shaving irritates my skin and so does waxing, so I used to use real tweezers, but an epilator is so much quicker. You don't feel any pain once you are used to it.

Nair is a totally painless hair removal cream, you simply apply it, wait 8 minutes then rinse it off with warm water.
Leaves you silky smooth but only for 3-4 days till the regrowth occursm but its great for a quick fix :D

I used Nair once on my legs, right before my prom. I have sensitive skin, so I bought the sensitive kind, but, man! I got the worst rash ever. It hurt really badly, was all red and gross, and didn't even get rid of all the hair! I had a long dress, but it had a high slit on one side. I just had to wear stockings and hope no one noticed (I did tell my boyfriend what happened). I've tried to wax on my own, but it irritates me, too. I hate shaving, but that's my only option. sigh.

Sakura-
Here's a tip to avoid PAINFUL shaving- NEVER SHAVE DRY! I'm amazed to hear some people actually do this! When you're in the shower, do all your washing, shampooing first, and the warm water will get your leg hair soft for shaving, which you do LAST! Also, lather up when you shave. This makes the razor glide OVER you legs, not scraping over them. Unless I do this I get serious irritation as well. Good luck! :D

When you're in the shower, do all your washing, shampooing first, and the warm water will get your leg hair soft for shaving, which you do LAST! Also, lather up when you shave. This makes the razor glide OVER you legs, not scraping over them. Unless I do this I get serious irritation as well. Good luck! :D
 :x People shave DRY?!?!? *winces* Owie... I always tended to shave first thing when showering, but I'll have to try this way, see if it makes it any better. *nods* Lather is always a *good* thing. Thanks Cocodrilo!

There's a new pocket-sized epilator(is that what those hair-plucking thingees are called?) out in Japan. TV CMs are claiming it is "painless". When I see the CM next time round, I'll list the name of the device. May be available stateside before you know it.

I love food! More specifically, my sweets! Again, I cheer on Pocky and Yan-Yan!
(Note: Pocky="biscuit"{unflavored cookie} sticks dipped in an icing-like flavoring, such as: dark chocolate, strawberry (with little pieces of dried strawberry!), a green-tea type thing, and some are chocolate rolled in almonds... Strawberry and green tea are my favorites! =^__^= Yan-Yan, if any of you remember the "Dunkaroos" from a few years ago, they're like that. If you don't remember them, then Yan-Yan is like pocky, only with shorter, thicker sticks, that you dip into your own icing, thus controlling how much or little you get. The dip for Yan-Yan is much more like icing than the Pocky coating is, but it's all still really, really good!)

Gentlemen - what the bloody heck is going on here! :x :argue:
Where's your pride? :headwall:  :headwall:
I take a little break from DF for a while and the ladies hijack a thread about MANLY chest hair? Ok, its time to take this thread back! :P
Without telling too much, I have a very hairy chest, but I don't show it off much. Typically while dancing I wear a white shirt under my dress shirt, so there's not a lot to see there. A funny side bit though, when I was going through Massage training I was voted "hariest guy in class", and another student recommended a salon that could do waxing for me. I polietly declined, because I also claimed the title of having the best legs (and I think mine were sexier than the ladies as well!), so it wasn't all bad. 8)
So yes, I am a hairy guy, I've met women who heavily dislike it, and others who it turns on...the latter are the ones that I like to spend time with! ;)
For the ladies, yes I know how much time you all spend on shaving...and I will admit that shaved legs and underarms are very attractive, but if I see some hair there I will not have a fit, the natural look is ok in my book.
That being said, I will share just how much time I spend on my beard! I stayed clean shaven for many years...but now I've been sporting facial hair for the past 6 months or so. I spent lot of time looking at the styles of other guys...purchased a special beard trimmer and spent many hours experimenting to get the right look. And trust me as the DF guys know (well those who get more than peach fuzz that is!), keeping a full beard is way more work than going clean shaven!
A funny story to share...a while back I was at a Salsa workshop, and one of the teachers there had shaved his underarms (yes he was a man), and I had never seen another guy do this! He had no body hair that I could see on his upper body...and I almost wished I had some fake hair and glue so I could have made him look normal...heh. ;)
So again, I greatly repsect all the work you ladies do for shaving, and perhaps I could be considered akin to the missing link, but I'm hairy, bearded and damn proud of it! Some like it, some don't, but its all good for what floats our boat. :D
And on a final note, I entreat you ladies to examine this picture if you haven't already...for it is of our dear friend Boriken...so please take a look here:

My teacher (male yes) also shaves his underams, probably also shaves other areas of his body, but that I don't know nor do I really care to know. Don't care about his underarms but do wish he would get rid of that awful scrappy little ponytail (and i'm not the only one in class with that opinion).

In most swing types you can use the tripple-step. If it was lively then it was probably not West Coast Swing. WCS is non-bouncy, smooth and have more ballroom-like styling. The you got East Coast Swing or Lindy Hop (if it was in the US). I don't do ECS, but as far as I know the basic steps in ECS is a six count; back-step, tripplestep, tripplestep. While the basic patterns in Lindy is eight-count; back-step, tripplestep, walk-walk, tripplestep.
In Lindy you can use six-count as well, but the basic repertoire is mainly eight-count patterns.

To me, Julia Roberts, with ot without hair in her armpits, are neither gross nor disgusting. :P
Neither are most other women I otherwise would feel attracted by. I'ts nicer without, but I have no problem with a little hair. (Of course it depends on the amount.)
Personally I think it has a lot to do with fashion and what's hot and not, it's a socail thing more than anything else. I mean, why else should it be gross? It's not dirty or unhygienic and it's not unnatural in any way.

Sounds a bit kinky, don't 'cha think?   Heh, heh, heh. Sabor and Tasek, *what* are we going to *do* with you two, huh?!
pygmalion, we DF females do not live in a cave... hopefully ... as Sakura put it, we like our men hairy, but GROOMED! )
Good, hairy but groomed, that describes me quite nicely :D
Well, then we should like you quite well! =^__^= As I'm sure we do! :D

Well, I could give some suggestions but considering your age those would be quite inappropiate ;) but for now we could have a dance :)

:D   I think a dance would be quite nice! =^_~= (Of course, I think my geographical location in the US would have posed a bit of a problem too, ne? ) When I'm going all across Europe on my many trips, I shall have to hook up with you! You can show me how great your local dance scene is! :D Until then; have fun with your Salseras! 8)
