View Full Version : practice time
How often do most people practice, especially when you are not an advanced student?
I feel with my job I don't have time to practice enough, I try and prctice onece a week and take lessons twice a week.
I have also found that picking out the right partner is a major deal too, having the right partner is key in becoming good at this dance.
Your thoughts forum......
I get to practice about twice a week for 4 hours or so each time. Only have lessons once a week for 1.5 hours though. The main reason why we (my partner and I) practice so much is so I can catch up to her level and continue the classes (classified as intermediate...but personally I don't think its at that level) she was entered in, instead of starting a beginner class from scratch.
My partner is totally awesome and the best in the class we're taking (when the female instructor is missing, the other instructor always uses my partner for demonstration  ) so it's really easy dancing with her. She anticipates a little *too* well, though, because she knows everything I'm capable of and can predict what I'm doing. I'm trying to throw in new moves and ideas each time we dance though (thanks a great deal to these discussions and other online sites  ).
Only problem is we'll only be in the same country for 3 more weeks and I'll need to find another class/partner/schedule when I head back home :( .
Oh and of course whenever I'm washing the dishes or cleaning my room, etc, I need to dance shines and basic steps on 1, 2, 3, and 4 to any music thats playing 8) . Try dancing on-2 to Eminem...I dare ya  .

Hiya Jack...
There was a previous post on a simliar topic: http://www.dance-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=2165
As for me, I practice whenever I have free time, but it doesn't come easy. I practice at least three times per week for at least an hour and a half each time, sometimes more. Maybe one or two nights of social dancing as well...but it all doesn't seem like enough :)

Well I try and practice as much as I can, but I usually practice about 2-3 times per week. :D I'm not the greatest dancer in the world, but as I progress I can feel more of a flow in my dance to where moves just start to come out.....there is no thinking just movement. The more I practice I can feel all that coming together so I do it as much as I can :D

Lol!
Haz - with that kind of dedication, you're gonna be so good so fast that you'll shock your partner if/when you come back to see her.
Everyone's got a different background, a different learning curve, and differing amounts of time/energy/money to spend on dancing. That's why time spent doesn't always equal skill level. There are follows that I dance with, who have been only dancing a few months that are far better dancers than one who have been dancing for years.

Well, this isn't in dancing. But in salsa and merengue I practice playing my instruments everyday for about 1-2 hour(s).
As soon as I get home from work, I break out the instruments and just wild out to the music (usually until its too late due to the noise pollution laws).

Practice? Does that include twirling around my living room?
=)
I guess that's never for me.
Wondering -- where do you guys practice? Do you go to studios?

Edie, the Salsafreak, talks about spinning in the Ladies Room. (sounds dangerous!)

I do.
I practice in my family room to a practice cd, and at class. I took a sabbatical this week from Salsa calsses except took a private lesson on my timing and rhythm. making sure I hear all the beats and staying on them. Its coming along but will take a bit.

And I follow her advice. I've found it to be safer than spinning in my tiny study full of books, and it's also got a better floor surface.

No, no studios are available where I am. I practise in work's ladies room , work's back stair landing (now this can be dangerous ), my kitchen, my study (the only place where I can practise to music -- DANGER: FALLING BOOKS)...

:) I used to practice in my office, when I worked for a smaller company... now I work for a big one and it's impossible... but I always listen to salsa music in the office and when I get up to take a file or something I do it on the beat (my colleagues think I'm gone...).
I also practice in clubs... sometimes when my partner gets these crazy ideas of patterns into his head, we try them and I'm the one who says how they feel and if they're feasible...
I also practice when I teach... it's good practice (and impresses the students... that's why I don't do it very often...).
I practice in my room, at home... and scare the s**t out of my two cats...they run for cover!

You don't practice very often there because it impresses your students? Why not? Watching my teachers going over the move for the day before the class always inspired me when I was a beginner -- it made me want to get better and dance like them.

:) MacMoto dear, you don't know what is like here in Romania... guys don't dance with me 'cause I'm "oh so good!"... they're scared shitless... my students invite me (some of them, not all...) but I had people tell me they think the patterns and footwork my partner and I do (both in club and at the school) are too complicated for them, that they'll never learn... and believe me, they're not complicated at all... especially the footwork... and what I'm teaching my students, I try to adapt to their level... not gonna teach double spins to a gal who barely follows, right?!
