If making a Latin dress with an uneven hem, which side should be longer, left or right? Why?

Thank you in advance. :)

Well, I think it's personal preference. Think about the choreography....are there times when one leg is more exposed than the other? If so, I'd go with that side.

I would personally make the left side longer as in jive you're most often taking a back rock step with your right foot-- depending on how you style, if you're doing it from a high knee, you have a higher chance of hooking your hem with your heel. I've seen this happen a fair amount with ppl with longer skirts/tails-- the higher level dancers I've seen usually grab their skirts with their free right hand to keep it out of the way.

I like the logic to avoid getting the heel caught, but that probably depends on how long the skirt is overall. Some skirts are too short on both sides to ever get the heel caught. ;)

I haven't done latin in ages, but IMO if one side is shorter it should be the left. No matter what your choreography, you are likely to do some basics. You will more often be doing a basic back break on your right leg, which gives you the opportunity to show your left leg forward.

Maria McGill does a lot of uneven skirts, so I went to her website (out of curiosity) and it looks like hers are some of each, but probably most with the longer side on the right (shorter on the left, as skwiggy said). But it looks like you could ultimately go either way!
