Ok, since me and Peach got to talking about favorite move and bringing up video I got to thinking it would be nice to add to my salsa collection. What are some of the best tapes or dvd for instruction you guys have seen out there? Workshop tapes count to. For me, I will rank what I have already in order of preference, and how usefull I feel they were

1. Juan and Diana's NY salsa tapes, (all 3 are the cream of the crop so far as I'm concerned)
2. Jami Jospehson's intermediate salsa tape
3. Shaka Brown's Tape 3 spin and turns (why he called it that I don't know, its his only tape. :P maybe he's doing the george lucas thing)
4.The Workshop tape from cancun salsa cruise 2002
5. Eddie Torres's tapes vol 1 and 2
6. Josie Neglia's first 2 tapes on Salsa.

Numbers 2 and 3 are very close to number one but I had to draw the line somewhere.

So what other tapes have you guys and gals found worth the money?

I just used blind trust and ordered Juan and Diana's NY salsa tapes (intermediate and Advanced), so I hope you are right. I'll let you know what I think. I think they will be here late this week.

Hopefully, you'll like them, DM. I have them, myself. Very straight fowarded and to the point. Intermediate is on one and offers slow motion after each move. Advanced is on one and two with different variations, very thorough. :D

Thanks, I'm sure I'll like them. I just need a few new moves to expand my teaching reportoire. I'm getting tired of what I've been teaching. Also, I have another "on 2" class coming up soon, and I want to make it better.

Ok, I'm biased cuz I'm friends with the guy, but Eric Freeman's stuff was (is) good when an Improver lead is looking to add more moves to his repertoire.

Some favorites:

Both of Edie's ladies styling videos (Vol. 1 with Salomon Rivera and Vol. 2 with Al Espinoza)

"LA Style Salsa Level 3" with Enio Cordoba & Terryl Jones

"Dips, Lifts, and Solos to Spice up Your Salsa" with Dave Morgan & Lisa Perez

I also really enjoyed Juan & Diana's "New York Salsa - Advanced Vol. 1"

There are if I recall 2 more tapes in the series that I had a chance to buy when those to were still together, but when they split they also quit offering the 2 and 3rd volume of the advanced series. So close...

I've got to get my hands on those! :D

I've got only one salsa DVD/video (I'm spending all my salsa collection allowance on music at the moment), and it's Edie's spins video. If spinning is a problem for you, it's worth buying. What she talks about in it is much the same as the spinning article on her website, but having a visual does help. Does it help you become a good spinner? Ask me again in 10 months time...

Now, can anybody here recommend a good ladies styling video?

Oh, and for those of you who like Rueda, back in Denver, the de facto standard was to use Salsa Lover's videos when people would argue how to do a move.

I saw them at Century Ballroom. There were two of them. Twins. They were wearing all white and danced by the bar area in the corner. I was happy to just watch them dance the rest of the night. I should of asked for their names and where they learned to dance like that.

Well, from what I know of Victor and Israel, both of them are technically sound, so the "flash over fundamentals" isn't true for them.

I can't find a website for them, but here's a picture of Israel (the one with the mustache). Is this one of the guys:

Just a quick note to say that yup, salsa fever is very good - ordered a couple of bits off there the other for a friends birthday and they arrived within a couple of days - though this may only apply for UK delivery!

Pacion, yup, Susana does have a ladies styling video out - mainly footwork as I remember but some useful tips on there. The other one I found helpful MacMoto was Edie's ladie's styling 1 - I believe she has a second one out but it's not available int he UK yet unless you order off of the web. Edie's video is available from salsa uk - salsa-uk.com and susana's from uk salsa uksalsa.com (just to be confusing!) Hope this helps. :D

Well, I watched Juan and Diana's NY salsa tapes.
The intermediate tape is great. I didn't like the advanced tape that much. Virtually, the whole tape was devoted to two things: double spins to left and tripple spins to right. I thought that actually the intermediate tape was just as challenging and offered more variety.

I agree that the 3rd tape is spin heavy but the middle of the tape I thought had a lot of good stuff, especially the supermario patterns. Notice how a lot of 3rd tape comes off the 2nd tape or is a more advanced variation of what is show on the 2nd tape? BTW if anyone knows where I can get U.S. compatible copy of Supermarios's tapes, let me know the link I had is defunct now.

Hi,

here some of my favorites:

1. Worth of money is also the Video Intermediate/Advance Video with Luis and Joby Vasquez. Lots of Combo and they are leadable. On 1.

2. Jai and Candy Shines Video ist also interesting. 8 advanced/intermediate Shines Combos (maybe not so much but interesting). At the end they add some bonus stuffs. Nice to see them challenging each other. It is a good summary plus some more. Syncopated steps and some body moves (and some styling points) for the Guy! ET on 2 Style.

3. Worth of money for the basic shines ist Razz ' m Tazz Shines video. Lot of shines. A good one to start a shines collection. Power 2 Style.
[Ron & Bethana Rosario Shines DVD/video is intermediate. Power 2 Style. Not so much shines combo.]

4. Mambo D (Dellile Thomas, former Eddie Torres Dancer) video is ok. 20 Combos. Straight for the intermediate/advanced Video. Very leadable. Smoth dancing style. ET on 2 Style.

5. Super Mario from London is interesting. Have Video 1 (intermediate to advanced) but if you are advanced dancer maybe better check for his new videos. Good, straight and precised breakdowns. I like his teaching. You get a lot of stuff for the money. Very leadable. On 1.

6. Morry's Advanced combo video has also a lot of stuff for the money. Good breakdown. www.salsaventura.nl . This is in Holland. On 1

Can u tell more about Shaka 's video? Is it ET on 2 or Power 2 Style?

hoope it helps.

1. Juan and Diana's NY salsa DVDs -- For DVD one I liked the way the footwork was broken down first, followed by partner work. I thought DVD 2 was worth it as well. Having on1 and on2 demonstrations is good for when I get good enough to do on2 as well. It will take me a long time to outgrow the DVDs this way, though

2. Jose Neglia's salsa tapes, which are on1, are not bad. They do tend to be a lot of moves that are just slight variations. My only complaint is that in open position, the leader's right and follower's left do this hand motion for the second half of the basic that does not jive well with me as it seems very contrived.

Does anyone know of any good cumbia, cuban style salsa tapes/DVDs?

Does anyone know of any good cumbia, cuban style salsa tapes/DVDs?

What do you mean by cuban style?

Do you mean dancing like a person that was born in cuba (Cultural Style? or dancing with an Afro-Cuban feel as down to the Folkloric Art Form?

To me they are different.

Pupy from NY City has an Authentic Afro Cuban Style (he was the lead dancer of an Afro Cuban Dance group until he fled the group and cuba to live in the US. I’ve seen him dance, and he is the best male dancer I’ve ever seen.

Nydia Ocasio too, has an Authentic Afro Cuban Style. She is the best dancer male or female that I’ve ever seen. She makes the best of the best in NY City look like amateurs. She has been dancing and teaching for over 30 years. She was, as well, the lead female dancer of a folkloric Afro Cuban Dance group from Cuba for a number of years, where she was trained by Afro Cuban Folkloric Dances Grand Masters who headed the group, also trained by Puerto Rican Dance Grand Masters in both styles of Bomba music and Plena. She was also taught the folkloric dance from Brazil Samba, and a few others. She was the feature dancer for Eddie Torres when he started out with his dance company. There was Nydia, then everyone else. She was the one in the limelight when the tough got going. Those who know NY City dancing history seem to know her as the Real Queen Of Mambo dancing.

Pupy and Nydia have Afro Cuba in them like not many do. These two people are whom the best of the best, in NY City, seek to learn authentic Afro Cuban movement.

They are the core of Afro Cuban Dance in NY City. A Video from either will bring your dancing style to a state not many have and to the roots of salsa movement. That is what I think of when I hear Cuban Style. If I don’t see that style in a dancer then they don’t really have Authentic Afro Cuban Style.

I don’t know if Pupy has his own website, but he can be found at cubansoul.com under featured dancers.
And Nydia can be found at nydiaocasio.com.

You’ll be in for a treat if you can manage to learn from these dancers.

Nydia, was another one I got to work with when I was in Cancun, really good, but a alot of the stuff she showed in her Salsa workshops, didn't strike me as really different from what I had been told in the past in terms of technique. She did tell some really neat history and music stuff to top it all off.

Yeap, there is no secret to Afro Cuban technique. The difference comes in application. Everyone in NY City seems to know how the body should move, yet, the don't move it so when they dance. As well as, someone can know the technique, can tell us the technique but not know how to teach its application to some one else, how to show a dancer the way to get it out. The application of technique to others...

I sometimes wonder why everyone is taking Pupy's classes in NY City, when there is not one spec of afro cuban rhythm in their dance. All people mimic is the illusion of the arms moving and feet moving, even more so, there are people that know technique, will show you how they do it, but can not teach you how to do it. Hence, the illusion is born, the movement of feet and arms...

That is where the difference strikes, when Pupy or Nydia dance the technique comes alive... Technique of Afro Cuban or body movement can not change from person to person, it must stay the same, hence those that teach it must teach the same...

Indeed she knows her history, wow, when we speak we are sitting hours talking about music and history of dance. WOW!!! If you are into that then boy oh boy, you'll love her.
