I'm about to be BANISHED to the depths of "Nowhere-ville" for an extended period of time (a year or two) . There's no getting out of it, so a question for everyone out there:
What do you do if you don't have a salsa scene around you :( ?
I don't want salsa to wither up and fall out of my life!! What to do?! I'll only be able to gain access to the scene about every two weeks (at the most)...so how do I keep up and build my skills?
   Help help help!
Hello,
Most of the salsa I have learned has been while I have been stuck somewhere with no scene. You have salsa every two weeks, I got it about once a month. What I have done to remedy this(now up to 3-4 times a month:
1) I found a group who already knew and danced with them socially. As I got better I began dancing with a girl a couple times a week to learn more.
2) Network, Network, Network, Get to know everyone you can in the local salsa community, chances are there is more salsa than you know going on. At this point someone can't make a wave in my local salsa pond without me hearing about it.
3) Once I knew enough people I started a salsa club through the school. another way is to start a yahoogroups for the local salsa dancers.
Basically, find the scene, get to know the scene, expand the scene.
This should not be too hard to do in your situation since you already know that you will be able to find at least a little bit of salsa.
good luck,

Bring a couple of CDs with you, sit back, close your eyes and dance in your mind. :D :D
wish you the best finding the local scene. :D

Drive - or find a friend, convince them that they need to learn to dance, and let them drive! (Hitchhiking, walking, biking, crawling, and swimming are also valuable options open to those desperately seeking a way to get to a dance - let nothing be beneath you in your quest for salsa! :))

When all else fails, when you are pushed to the limit of depravity, and just barely staying sane:
Put some high energy dance music on a walkman and go running.

Are you sure there is no salsa scene where you go? Have you thoroughly checked the Internet? Nowadays you can find salsa almost everywhere. It might not be NYC  but at least you can dance.

Yep...I checked and continue to check with the prominent salseros in my current scene. Nothing of substance yet...but I'm being hopeful :)

You might be surprised to find salsa in the local scene... maybe it's not on the internet... but it might exist, who knows?!
Just don't lose hope...
PS: if I'm not too pushy, what could be so 'unchangeable' that you have to move to a place without salsa? If I were deprived of Salsa, I'd go mad... most of my choices are Salsa-related... meaning: is there Salsa where I go?! Will I be able to dance?

Exactly, that is always about the first thing I check when I go to another place.
By the way, Raluca, I will go to Romania for a week in mid May to join my husband on a business trip. Since I have never been there, I figured this would be the opportunity! I will be in Bukarest. Haven't even reserved my flight, but have already surfed around for salsa clubs
I found 2 clubs: Salsa You and ME and Salon Q. Now what is the place the go in Bukarest? When and where do you have salsa?

I guess I should've elaborated a bit... if it was me, all I really need is one partner I can dance with. Even if there isn't a "scene" as such, and even if you can't really build one, that's far from saying that you'd be unable to get one other person interested enough to dance with you...

Thank you all for being a sounding board for my worries! I guess social dancing will have to just be once every two weeks...I hope I survive! Anyway, thanks to this new thread on salsa videos

I think I'll be able to at least maintain some level of skill while I'm in the sticks. It's a boarding school, so maybe I'll teach some basics as an elective. (it's all boys, so that ought to be an experience!)
Thanks again :D
