Sorry, this is a really girlie topic but I just gotta...

I mentioned a while back I've got my first competition coming up soon (it's on Saturday, I can't wait!) I have almost everything organised - shoes, outfits, accomodation ... but I am despairing over what to do with my hair! I've been growing it out from a short style so I can put it up for comps but it's still too short to do anything with. Can any of you gals (or guys for that matter - I enjoyed your contribution to the recent make-up thread, NeoDevin!) give me some tips or ideas on how I could style chin-length hair into something dance-friendly? :?

Maybe there are some existing threads? Sorry if I'm re-covering old ground. You've probably discussed this before, while I was still among the uninitiated - I've done a search, but all the "matches" seemed to be bizarrely unrelated to anything to do with hairstyles (except maybe the waxing poll ... )

I guess it really depends on the look you want to achieve and what style you are dancing. The "look" in latin is usually a low round bun (sometimes called a spanish bun), in standard it is often a type of updo with a twist or waves but I have even seen intricate braiding (and many other looks including the low bun.)

If you want the look of long hair that is put up, you can purchase a hair piece in the shape of a bun, twist or various other styles. Many of these hair pieces are easily attached and secured. You would need to slick back your hair and probably gel it pretty good before using one of these. A number of the pros attach hair pieces to achieve the look they want, especially if they have short hair.

In latin, there are many ladies with chin length hair that just let it fly. Usually they have short bangs and polish thier tresses with a shine spray (great for light reflection). At the moment, I can't recall any ladies in standard dancing that don't pulled their hair up for comps, unless they have a really short style. (Again, just going from memory of comps I've watched.)

As for styling of chin length hair on its own, I'm sure others will respond with more experience than I. (I have long hair, not much I can contribute.) Best of luck to you. :D

That's good advice, 10dancer. I've had short to medium hair most of my life, and what you suggest works. Gel it down and wear a hair piece. If it's chin length, you can probably leave it loose with no problem. If it's any longer, I wouldn't recommend leaving it loose. It will obstruct your top line, get in your eyes, and possibly lacerate your partner.

The only suggestion I'd add is to try out your hair style before the comp. You don't want to find out on the day of the comp, that your hair piece keeps slipping off. Not good.

if i could i would lend u mine

seriously though i dont think u should worry about it much .. whatever looks sexiest while comfortable gets my vote.. personally i prefer relatively shorter hair on lady dancers cause then there is lesser risk i get hairslapped to oblivion LOL .. and it could look very neat and stylish .. what style depends really on what u are wearing and the type of face u have (i'm sure it beautiful) so.. no way i can suggest what to do .. except maybe to be comfortable with whatever u end up with and that it serves u when dancing (does not cover your eyes.. does not puff-out and get messy etc etc.. goodluck :P
