If ones aim as a teacher is to be inclusive and get people dance to the best of their ability, is competing in tango against the ethos of a social dance?

Habing watching the video of the BA Mundial competition; a lot of the stage dancing leaves me cold since it emphasises spectacle over connection and the salon dancing was like watching paint dry ( but I like watching real people dance)

Read the rules and ask the question are there moves excluded from the salon style that some people would actually dance on the dance floor.

what do others think?

I expect Flav & Vincent will be up there then!

As for the rest of us .... well I think you know the answer!

It's a bit like the bi-annual Mind & Body Expo. You don't necessarily have to be into tarot or crystals to pop along and see what's what and I suspect although there will be plenty from the tango world making an appearance with slick D-A-Go hair and high-maintenance makeup, there will be others who are not. Thus, the aim also, with the stalls, the shows, the pamphlets being shoved under many an unsuspecting nasal passage etc. is advertise and hopefully gain a few new converts.

Like you, shows and these "interrupt my milonga with don't you" performances leave me daydreaming but that said, many, many don't mind it and quite enjoy it. "Ordinary" people (like the majority of those that watch shows like Strictly) don't dance and so when they do spend their hard earns to watch some tango dancing I suspect they would rather watch something showey-offy than what usually seen at a regular milonga. I say it it's all good stuff for those that will go.

(What frazzled my frizzles was discovering that some bright spark has come up with the idea of a holding a 3-day Bikram Yoga Competition....whhhaaaaaatttt?? Mass injuries await:()

There's only one 'true' competion in dance - and that's the 'Jack and Jill' where competitors are partnered randomly with each other.

I've not heard of it - neither the place, nor the competition, nor the teachers. Possibly I'm ignorant.

I suspect it's another "UK Competition" run by a local club, the winner will probably be called Galactic Grand Champion or something. Negracha's did one in 2006 - that's the one Flavia and Vincent won, and which they kept on referring to as "UK championships".

Salsa had the same thing a few years back - "UK salsa championship" competitions, run by a single London club.

AFAIK there's no UK-wide Tango authority, so there's no chance of a real UK Tango competition at the moment.

Plus, the site's rubbish.

Where or when ever there is a pass-time , there will be a " sport " emanating from it ,and .. that inevitably leads to... Comps... most of which are " male " driven .

I was pointed to it by a woman, whom I have turned down. It's just not the reason I dance.

I feel sastisfaction when I impress people with my dancing skills, but I have no urge to drop myself into a situation with pressure to perform to my best. It just stops me from enjoying the dance.
