We've had quite a few threads on favourite salsa songs, cha cha... what about merengue, forro, and bachata? What are your favourite songs to dance to? You can add other styles that I have missed if you wish, as I would love to experience the music through the ears of those who actually do the dances.

I've got a bunch of "Merengue Greats" CDs, but I don't have a particular favorite. As for bachata, right now, I'm kinda hooked on a song by India called "El Hombre Perfecto"(Beautiful!!!!)

P.S. On the album "Latin Song Bird: Mi Alma y Corazon", she also includes this song in a merengue version! :D

I don't really do Bachata however I really like merengue. Grupo Mania is probably my favorite group. Really love their "Masters of the Stage" CD. Fulanito has a few that I like. Cepillo comes to mind, by them. That one is a favorite.

I love Sonora Carruseles "Micaela," it is such a fun salsa song. Anything by Joe Arroyo is great too. I also really like Vallenato. Actually, quite a handful of Bachata hits were "borrowed" from Vallenatos i.e., Monchy y Alexandra's "Hoja en Blanco."

I also love track 2 on my only french carribean CD that I "borrowed" from a co-worker  - I don't know the words to the songs or even their names due to how I acquired the CD, but I love it's sensuality. Finally, I think I am wearing one of my samba CD's out by playing Dafe's "Pra Que Vou Recordar O Que Chorei" and Rildo Hora's "Os meninos da Mangueira" as well as Claudio Inspiracao's "Bicho Feroz."

There are a couple of nice bachata remakes like Luis Vargas' Sublime Mujer ( Original Vicente Fernandez ) and Fernandito Villalonas' remake of NEK's Laura No Esta. And all the Mana en Bachata songs by Anthony Santos ( Perdido en un bar , etc ). I guess they touch me more because of the cultural context from where they come from ( Latin pop ).

As long as bachata artists, Monchy and Alexandra, Luis Vargas and Yoskar Serante and some Aventura songs.

Forro? -- after a spot of Googling and audio clip listening -- I don't think it's played around here at all...

The word "forro" is Brazilian pronunciation of "for all," and that's what this music is about: folk music in the rock 'n' roll tradition, played by anyone with an instrument, just for the joy of it. This is the rockabilly of Brazil; raw, rhythmic Saturday night party stuff. Other comparisons might be zydeco or TaxMax, but mostly this is its own thing, influenced by the popular sambas and played on European instruments in a region with heavy African roots and an indigenous culture. Unlike the samba or the bossa nova, it's ragged but right; you feel it before you hear it. And don't expect social commentary or subtle poetry-like zydeco, forro is about love and sex, sweaty nights after hard days. The ensembles are similar as well; accordions, drums, triangle and bass back up the vocals, usually soloists in an uptempo mode made for dancing.

Another new thing I've learned from DF. :)

Oh man...There are so many great bachata songs, but my favorite as of this moment (it changes from time to time) is "A Esos Hombres" by El Gringo de la Bachata. However, my favorite song to dance bachata to is "Amor De Madre" by Aventura.....the vibe u get from the rhythm makes the dance that much better (so many nice memories :D )

"Donde Esta Mi Negra" ...Great merengue song. I'll have to check my CD to see who it's by and edit later. :)

Welcome to DF, tintinnabula. I too love Micaela! It was one of the first songs I ever salsa'd too and I definitely have a soft spot for it. As for Merengue...the list goes on and on and on, but I am partial to a merengue to Follow the Leader, though it doesn't have that latin Merengue feel.

Hey everyone! Ya'll are sooo friendly...I think I just might have to invite some of my friends to join. Genesius - LOL you got it...I couldn't think of any other word but this one...then I figured that in some way it fits here. Heck, sometimes I find myself dancing to the chiming of bells anyway. MadamSamba and borikensalsero, thank you for the warm welcome!

I'm currently listening to Fuego a la Jicotea on Batanga.com - what a great song! Makes me feel like dancing right here in my cubicle!

Wepa... Marvin Santiago's fuego a la jicotea... I consider that a happy song, one that truly makes you get up and swing, even if you can't! Poor guy, he went down hill from there on. :(

My pleasure, I'll dig up the other posts about salsa favorites, and post there. I don't want to hijack the merengue goodies.

BTW. I really like Que Cara Mas Bonita, and Que es Lo que queire esta negra. Very old classic merengues. I forget who sings them.

I was just catching up on some of your previous posts (from last October!). Way too much for me to absorb in a single sitting! Whew! Good stuff!
