Who is going?

CCP and I are almost definitely going to spectate Saturday night (In fact, I am planning on flying back early from a conference in Boston to be there!) and probably Sunday day as well.

I looked at the current entries, and I notice several new couples in Adult Championship Latin:

Pasha Pashkov and Danielle Karagach
Sergey Onik and Melissa Blanco
Max Belozerov and Evgenia Shatilova

Intriguing.

(I hope it is okay that I started this thread. I notice there is a Southeastern Championship thread under "Event Announcements," but thought we might need one here in the Ballroom chat section as well.)

I was really planning on going because I REALLLY wanted to see some of the new partnerships, but I have a prior commitment that I really can't/don't want to miss. So at least I should get to see them all at Nationals. Are you & CCP competing?

I don't think so. We had a little debate on this topic, and I think I lost.

I will be doing a pro-am comp the week prior to this, though.

I can't do anything that requires technical skills, but if there is phone call or errand type stuff that you would like to delegate, I might be able to help.

Most of the headache is answering calls from people who would know the answer to their question with a little reading. That, and people who either don't have (or have expired) USA Dance numbers, or use the wrong one to enter. Also, there are still a few people stuck in the stone age.

Ooh, and now Kate Kapshandy and a new partner are also in the mix!

The list of couples I'm interested in seeing keeps growing!

Ooh, and Kiki Nyemchek and Magda Fialek.

So I think that makes SIX new partnerships in Am Latin that I've never seen at a USA Dance comp, plus a couple others that have debuted recently.

I finally got around to buying two VIP seats today. Hope to see a bunch of D-Fers there!

I am on my way to this event!

Have to make a stop at my sister's in Anne Arundel County first to drop off Naomi, then on we go. (We had hoped to go for the morning session, but plans hit an unfortunate snag, as plans sometimes do. Problem resolved now.)

CCP is taking his camera, and he is in a VERY good mood with me, because I agreed to give him his birthday present early: a Kindle 2! (His birthday isn't until March 8, but the box arrived while I was in Boston on a business trip and he and Naomi figured out what it was due to some fine print on the box. The sneaks!) So hopefully we will be able to share some great photos of the new partnerships for those of you too far away to make the event!!!

ChaChaMama

I'll start with

ADULT CHAMPIONSHIP LATIN:
1--Valentin Chmerkovsky and Daria Chesnokova
2--Oleksandr Althukov and Oksana
3--Alexey Karaulov and Sasha Nissengotts [Best surprise of the night! Really on.]
4--Pasha Pashkov and Danielle Karagach [Wow! Hard to believe these two have only been together a short time. Terrific. Great dark pink color costumes.]
5--Couple 329--Did not get the names. Girl was either Karolina or Karina. They are from NYC.
6--Tal Livsh*itz and Vlada Semenova [I love Tal and would have liked to see him place higher. Next time! I will admit this was a tough field, and the standard didn't end all that long before the latin.]

FOOTNOTES:
Two couples were unable to finish the quarter-final due to injury. I believe these were Sergey Onik and Melissa Blanco, and Michael Groberman and Ilana Keselman. Too bad, as I would have liked to get more of a look at both pairings.

Igor Popov and Nicole Volynets did not dance, as far as I could tell.

I liked Kiki Nyemchek with his new partner Magda Fialek, and I thought they would make the final. I'll bet they were 7th or 8th.

Max Belozerov and Evgenia Shatilova looked good together, though I didn't see them as challenging for a spot in the final...yet.

ChaChaMama
02-28-2009, 11:29 PM
ADULT CHAMPIONSHIP STANDARD
1--Ronen Zinshtein and Mariam Izmaylova 1/1/1/1/1
2--Alexandre Tchernossitov and Regina Maziarz 2/2/2/2/2
3--Tal Livsh*its and Vlada Semenova 3/3/3/3/3 (YAY!)
4--Alexander Spencer and Katarzyna Herink (YAY!)
5--Joseph Huesmann and Stacey Friedman (YAY!)
6--Jason Turner and Lila Turner
7--Tulga Ersal and Ilkin Ersal

FOOTNOTE: Eric Shapiro and Aleksandra Samarodskaya would have been in the final, but had to withdraw due to injury.

Nice to finally meet you in person CCM.

the first round was brutal in the comp.. 14 couples on that small floor, tough.. survivable but, not the best idea I think.

Otherwise a nice comp, well run.

Our performance was OK (not the greatest) considering the extended sicknessed and lack of energy. good runthrough for start of the season, hoping for much better next time though..next week at heritage.

Nope, definitely not just you. "Brutal" is a very accurate description of how it was dancing with that many couples on the floor at once.

Other than that, I enjoyed the comp. It ran smoothly, relatively on time, nice venue and a nice floor.

Thank you everyone who came to the comp in whatever capacity!

BTW, I uploaded the results to O2CM yesterday afternoon.

IMO the problem wasn't so much running out of floor as it was running into people. :D

Yup. The floor was a decent size, it was just too many couples on it at once. It wasn't just unpleasant with that many couples on the floor, it was downright dangerous. :(

ChaChaMama
03-02-2009, 09:01 AM
Yeah, I think it would have been worth adding 10 minutes to the event to run that in two heats...esp. since the event was shortened one round due to scratches. (Listed in program as starting from quarter, but was actually a semi, IIRC.)

You know what else I hope they will have for Nationals, even though it adds 5-10 minutes? I like when each finalist in adult championship gets a dance on. I've only been to Nationals twice, and I think this was how things were done; I know I've seen it at other comps. I vote YES for adult championship. (I realize that if they did it for every age and every style, the comp would still be going on in May, but just adult champ should be feasible.)

Nik
03-02-2009, 09:26 AM
This was a very good preview of the Nationals, just missing some Cali couples. I heard 2 couples had to scratch due to injuries, that sucks.

Anyone know of a video of this comp?

Val and new partner Daria looked great. Even though I am a huge Valeria fan, I gotta say Val and Daria are a better match, stylistically. Also, was I the only one who was asking myself if this girl is coached by Karina? I thought they had VERY similar styles of dancing... I could, though, do without some of the silly faces she made while dancing - it was pretty distracting actually...

Other than that, I thought the comp was well run, most events ran early (thus is wasn't late) and it was a nice venue (also about 10-15 minute drive from my house which is great!). The floor was a bit short and narrow but doable. However, it was NOT cool to put so many standard couples on the floor at once. Both champ and pre-champ semi's were ridiculously crowded.

I miss Valeriya too. She's probably one of the most sexiest and captivating dancers I've seen. I hope to see her competing in pro very soon.

I heard people around me say it was like she was chewing gum.

Overall I thought her dancing was lovely and a great style match for Val, but the thing with her mouth was so distracting it really detracted from the performance. And her dress was all fringe, which to me almost never looks good on anyone. It hides so much of the girl's shape, that while you can see lots of movement with spins and quick turns, her hip action and natural curves are totally lost in the dress.

I think this is actually one of the biggest problems with dancesport altogether, i.e. that the dancing on the night matters so little (despite what most judges say) that placements can typically be predicted without even seeing the dancing. I'm sorry, but even the very best couples in the world have off nights, and when compared to other world finalists do not always dance better. (With the same holding true at any and every other level of competition as well.)

You said my sentiments EXACTLY. I hate the predictibility...it gives me less faith in the system...and doesn't really give me the feeling I'll ever have a chance myself, I suppose. I'm always hoping that every now and then someone can just knock off the existing champ (if they've held the title for a long time anyway).

Bella
03-03-2009, 02:20 PM
Yes I agree SD. I can't be 100% positive in my predictions since I wasn't present. However, I've seen top pros compete worst than their competitors and STILL place 1st due to their track record, or maybe politics, I don't know.

Bella
03-03-2009, 02:21 PM

Yup. We're like this: :together:

Do we not predict Riccardo and Yulia to come in first place for US (whether we're there or not)? Absolutely.

SDsalsaguy

Do we not predict Riccardo and Yulia to come in first place for US (whether we're there or not)? Absolutely.
Sure, but that's not equivalent to the scenario I presented. In this case, R&Y are contenders for the Blackpool/world titles, whereas the next closest US couple are not even "locks" for the final. That said, and although I do think they are too professional to ever show up and under-perform to that degree, it is possible for even R&Y not to dance well enough to win in the US.

Bella
03-03-2009, 02:33 PM
Sure it's possible, I never said it wasn't - so I'm in all agreement with you there! As far as I'm concerned a "bad day" for them hasn't touched their placement. Thank goodness, I love them. :)

It is funny you say this because upon leaving sunday I had the pleasure of speaking with a competitor ... we were talking about Val. He was like ... the only way Val can fail is if he was dancing with a corpse ... BUT it would have to be an ugly corpse.

Building on this tangent (that has very little to do with Southeastern Championships per se and may have to spin off into its own thread)....

I was worried that this year would be a rocky one for USA Dance because of all the split ups. (Of the 1 of the 6 Adult Latin couples from USA Dance Nationals in 2008 is still dancing together in 2009. Only 2 of the 7 Youth Latin couples are still dancing together. The JI and JII Latin champions swapped partners. Etc.)

Actually, this has been an interesting year. Sure, I'm sad that some dancers are between partners. Sure, I think the quality of the dancing tends to go up when people have been in partnerships more than a few months. But it's fun to watch events and not be able to predict the standings. It's exciting to see new pairings. And I feel like some couples have really taken it to the next level.

Can anyone here say with a good degree of confidence who the six couples in the Adult Latin final will be? I imagine we could agree on three, but there are several contenders for the remaining spots. I'm looking forward to seeing how things play out!

EM! I totally wanted to bring this up, but I know it's frowned upon to deliver secondhand info... So, thanks for mentioning it. It's a terrible norm in dancesport, but it exist and I'm guilty of it, but it doesn't mean I always think it's right.

... hey this was all said with smiles and good fun .... hehee ....just to make it clear. hahaa ..... eh ....I don't care about the politics honestly. It is everywhere. I just want to dance. Period!

I am having way to much fun in all of this to worry ya know. Meh ... let me dance, meet people, make friends, dance some more, volunteer, work, dance even more, etc .... La la la ....

hey but that comment WAS funny.:cool:984

I tried to light a fire under CCP about starting the photo processing, but was unsuccessful. (I gave him his b-day present and I made dinner last night...what more does the man want?) (Do NOT answer that!) We've got a funeral in Arizona coming up (not exactly sure when as the person just died last night), and then he has a business trip. So it might be awhile. :(

Hopefully you will think they were worth waiting for! Here are the people I know he shot:

YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP LATIN:
Nikita Malakhov and Sarah Gleyzer
Dmitry Ivashchenko and Liza Lakovitsky
Mircea Cernev and Jennifer Fales
Joseph Odikadze and Sandy Rabinovich

ADULT CHAMPIONSHIP STANDARD:
Miguel Valle and Alina Entin
Joseph Huesmann and Stacey Friedman
Ronen Zinshtein and Mariam Izmaylova
Alexander Spencer and Katarzyna Herink
Derek Walker and Jen Vestal
Tal Livsh*its and Vlada Semenova

ADULT CHAMPIONSHIP LATIN:
Andrei Kazlovski and Kate Kapshandy
Max Belozerov and Evgenia Shatilova
Pasha Pashkov and Danielle Karagach (who must be one of the most photogenic people on the planet.)
Sergey Onik and Melissa Blanco
Michael Groberman and Ilana Keselman (I think--I believe they withdrew due to injury, so only 1 or 2.)
Kiki Nyemchek and Magda Fialek
Alexey Karaulov and Sasha Nissengolts
Tal Livsh*its and Vlada Semenova
Valentin Chmerkovskiy and Daria Chesnokova

First set up!

I think there are some really nice ones, including quite a few of DFers in adult standard.

Within adult latin, CCP tried to get at least a few of all of the new couples that have debuted in the last few months. (Btw, one set of the adult latin seems to have scattered itself, so all of the sudden there will an adult latin picture with a number in the "62xxx" range in the middle of youth latin or adult standard pics with numbers in the "61xxx" range. C'est la vie.)

More to come.
