Curious to ask...any Cinco De Mayo Salsa events going on in your area? I was driving to visit my family after work today and went by one of our local nightclubs that used to have Salsa nights...and there I saw a sign listing a Salsa event for tomorrow in honor of the holiday. :D

All I can say is, I'll be there come hell or high water...ok now, where's my dancin' shoes... :car:

Hey SG, Here in Champaign IL, there is going to be a performance for cinco de mayo on campus. There is also a salsa night event at the club called High Dive. I will be attending both, circumstances permitting :D

In Ithaca I know of a forro dance at the grad center, the Big Red Barn. Ends at ten, though, but that's alright. I no longer have to dance all night. I can, but a coupel hours is just fine as well.

wednesday has always been a huge salsa night in NY City. I wonder if they are having any salsa festivities

There are a couple things at various clubs tonight. Sea World had a big Latin Music bash this past weekend -- some big name acts were in town. Too bad I missed it. I'm giong back for the one in September. They're so darn politically correct -- a Latin music thing for Cinco de Mayo every years, and one for Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15)

And believe it or not, the dancing's good -- not a dance floor in sight -- but the dancing's good.

There are lots of events going on here, too. I get the feeling that since there are lots of places to go, it's going to dilute the scene.

I'm probably just gonna go drinking with some non-salsa friends...

LOL. As long as it's Corona, it's all right.

Um. This is a dumb question, but do people do salsa in Mexico? I've always had the impression that Mexican people have their own traditional and modern dances that have evolved from their heritage. Salsa is something else entirely, right? Or has salsa just become that universal?

The majority of Mexicans in Denver dance cumbia to salsa music. And from what I remember, I believe the Mexicans that I saw dancing in Cancun were also dancing cumbia. (Patrick?)

There is a group of Mexicans here in Seattle that teach LA Style, however.

Nope. No special Cinco de Mayo salsa parties here. Just the regular Wednesday salsa stuff. There IS a ballroom dance, though. Oh yeah, and lots of discounted Corona, Margaritas, and tequila shots. Works for me.

I was first inspired to learn how to dance by my friends in Mexico. They admitted they knew the basic salsa steps as they took lessons for a short time. ALL of the people at the disco seemed to be dancing the same way, a sort of cumbia maybe, and EVERONE had that sexy hip movement! Not many Mexicans I met knew salsa, but boy did they dance! :D

The dancing style to mexican music is quite different. I just was shown this tonight at the dance event that I went too, and actually it is not a style that I particularly favour. I'm against, totally against jumpy bouncy dances in general. So, for forro I also dance a smoother style. North Brazil is jumpy forro, while down South it is smooth.

The dancing I SAW in Mexico, at the disco, not dance studios, and everyone had a very smooth sort of dance- swaying, not bouncy at all. Is this a cumbia? There was a lot of action in the hips, and it even looked to me as if some of the young ladies were bellydancing! I'll have to ask my friends in DF (Mexico City, not Dance Forums!) what they call it... :?

Same here cocodrilo, when I was down in Mexico city a couple of months ago the basic style I saw in the clubs was very cumbia based and I didn't see any bouncing at all. :?

interesting... I have seen Colombians and Peruvians dance... swaying was the description, not necessarily bouncing...
next time I shall pay more attention... :)

Actually, I should correct myself. Now that I think of it, the mexicans dancing had a swinging style. The others who were just dancing to the music and trying to do the same were bouncing. But the distinction between South and North Brazil forro is definitely correct.

Pygmalion,

Here in San Antonio most Mexicans dance cumbia, tejano, or conjunto. There were a few salsa events on Cinco de Mayo and salsa dancing is somewhat popular here but the dances I mentioned earlier...are much more popular amongst Mexicans in South Texas!! I must admit I've danced tejano and I like it! Hopefully, I can take lessons soon and get better.

No, not Corona....Heineken is the best mainstream beer with Samuel Adams a close second. Ha!! Ha!!!

Oh, but you HAVE to try Negra Modelo(esp. their amber!) or Bohemia. Now THOSE are beers!!!! :D

Someone wrote about Samuel Adams...wasn't that a "craft beer" produced by Miller? It's not bad, but with all the micro-breweries available, why should you have to drink that? :?

I'll have to look it up. I thought Samuel Adams was a standalone brewery. Not that I should know. I drink wine.

Cocodrilo,

That was a cheap shot at Samuel Adams! Ha! Ha! I don't know if Samuel Adams is made from Miller but it's a lot of better than those mainstream American Beers. Coors, Budweiser, Miller Lite..phew...yuck!! Sorry if I've offended if you like those beers! Ha!!
