As we all know, Cuba is THE place for great dancing and latin music. I am planning on visiting in the near future, as all my friends RAVE about it. Mind you, these friends are Kiwis, Japanese and Canadians and are not U.S. passport holders. There are flights to Cuba through Jamacia and Mexico, although American citizens who visit Cuba are sometimes fined heavily upon their return(to the tune of over $!0,000!!!). The cases against this have lost in court. Was wondering if any of you U.S. passport holders have visited and the outcome (legally) of your travels.

A US Citizen can legally visit Cuba under educational sponsored trips. Every year there is a salsa trip to Cuba which leaves from NY City (JFK Airport), California, Chicago, and Florida.
However, Bush is fighting to stop all cuba bound trips regardless of purpose. The blind, leading the blind :!:

According to musicians--Johnny Rivero (Sonora Poncena) to be exact--, US based musicians can, and do, visit Cuba from time to time.
How do they get around it.....?

That's probably some sort of cultural visa.

Have you heard of any US citizen visiting Cuba NOT on one of those tours? I never join tour groups(unless I'm organizing them) and would want the freedom to choose to go when it is convenient in my schedule.

Yes, I have a couple of acquaintaces who have visted Cuba without having to be part of the cultural thing. It has been heck, they've done wild and crazy things to get there, but in all. Have loved every bit of their wild adventures. Hopefully soon, I too can break the law. :D :D
Pardon the commercial, but Hal and Rena (who Patrick is familiar with) have trips once/year or so that are officially sanctioned for U.S. citizens to visit Cuba.
Their website is www.salsacruise.com
Oops, nevermind. I just surfed over there and the U.S. gov't has now suspended educational travel to Cuba.
Thank you very much, dubbya! :?
