I'm sorry if im in the wrong section, its my first post. I love dancing but am not very experienced. I have danced some Salsa and my fiance is a very good Salsa dancer but we are getting married soon and I want our first dance to be special (awwwwww!!! haha) Anyways, she wants our song to be Il Divo's Hasta Mi Final. Im pretty sure the song is 4/4 time and so I guess a waltz is out, obviously we cant Salsa our first 'romantic' dance. what kind of romantic waltz type dance could we do for that song? Any suggestions?
P.S. Moderators, if i am in the wrong section, please move me or let me know, i dont want to be a bother.

Foxtrots and Rumbas work well for what you're looking for.

can foxtrots and rhumbas be that slow, the song seems very slow and i always thought those dances were faster?

Nevermind, i was just trying some foxtrot steps and it worked quite well, thanks for your help. It had the slow romantic quality of the waltz but with 4/4 count, perfect. Thank you again.

Haha, i think im having more of a conversation with myself than anything. Ive been listening to the song now and using my very limited knowledge of the foxtrot and waltz and now it feels like the waltz is the one, maybe i just dont get what timing the song is, does anyone know the timing of this song? (its on youtube) maybe im just rhythm deficient haha help

LOL! You just picked a time when there aren't many people online.
Lovely song! It's not 3/4 time so probably best to stay away from waltz. I think foxtrot, rumba, and nightclub 2-step would work quite nicely. It's about 33 measures per minute, so you might want to slow it down if doing foxtrot.
Welcome to Dance Forums and congratulations, danceromance! :)

feels more like a rumba than a foxtrot. It just doesn't feel right as a foxtrot but you could do it as a slow rythym type of dance. Good luck with it - mummsie.

i don't really know much about the rhumba (I thought it was fast as well). Whats it like in comparison to Salsa? im really new to dancing like this and mostly only done salsa but would like to learn other dances and I think this would be a good opportunity to do so. The waltzy/foxtrot thing i was doing was nice with the song (except my bad timing haha), i was trying the turning box in the foxtrot which is similar to the left box turn in the waltz but with different timing. maybe i was just getting my timing mixed up. It was nice though. WOW discovering dance is really cool. I envy everyone who can dance well, its so wonderful.
I am sure if you searched you tube you would find a social rumba to view.... Rumba is a good one to do on a wedding and consideration needs to me made on what the bride is wearing...

Rumba is quite a slow dance - the dance of love.!!! If you have ever done a cha cha, you can transpose the steps from that into rumba but leave out the cha cha in the middle. If you look at the video section of this forum there are quite a few examples of rumba for yu to look at to get an idea what it is like. - mummsie :)

I think foxtrots can work alright with Il Divo songs. :)

The song is a Fox. The thing is that almost always, with the exception of waltz, several dances may be danced to the same song. The issue that you are having is similar, as dances have what we call crossover movements, meaning that the same movements work in differing dances when modified to fit the music and style. Stay with the Fox on this one, and make it soft, slow, and romantic for you and your bride.
And....congratulations!

Thank you to everyone for helping, I was looking at some Rumba and it seemed really Latin in the moves (not a bad thing) but I felt like it didnt really fit the song. But hey what do I know, i guess the next step is learning to dance better so I can actually do the dance with my fiance on the day haha. The journey begins...

IME the wedding dances that work best are not the ones that are technically best at all but the ones where you can feel the love between the couple. So keep it simple so that you can focus on each other and not worry about fluffing a step....

There is an obvious choice.. Bolero.. simple construction.. Perfect music ..
Some e.g.... La Lupe or Omara Portuondo.. they have many CDs..
... Felicidades !

bolero or FT...BPM can be altered on most good sound systems

For something like a wedding, I would suggest using a program like goldwave and changing the tempo ahead of time. That way you can use filter that doesn't change the pitch of the song. hate hearing a song sound like chipmunks (or barry white :) )

Ceroc would be even easier given they already know Salsa - it makes pretty much the ideal wedding dance.

Agree...only other dance that I could see with such a slow tempo would be a nightclub 2 step, but the bolero is much more romantic and appropriate.

though I do think most people grossly underestimate the versatility of the slow fox

No q about that.. its more about difficulty versus expedience .

Love your name... I'm a romantist myself .
I'd say a rumba. I'm helping out with my best friend's rumba for their wedding in September. It's sweet, tender....
Congrats on the wedding!

Hmmm, Im going to have to check out the new suggested dances, The sound system tempo change is unlikely, we are getting married in Guatemala and i don't think we would be able to count on a superduper soundsystem.
Thanks for all the advice (and compliments on the name and congrats on the wedding) Dance for me is special and romantic although I do enjoy a night of fun at the club. Im not a very technical dancer and my fiance only knows Salsa, Merengue, and Bachata (a bit) so I think the simple is better quality not quantity idea is more appealing. Thanks again for the suggestions and help.

have a wonderful wedding and don't forget - weddings are really for parents (they are loosing something) not for the bride and groom (they are gaining) ;)
Let us know how the dancing went!

Does anyone have any suggestions on where I can find some basic bolero steps online. Just to see how they fit with the music. I've found some descriptions about the steps and some videos but call me strange, I have found those foot diagrams the most helpful so far in terms of getting an idea about other types of dance. Thanks in advance.

Probably a day or 2 late, (been away), but finding good bolero online is argumentative. Stick with the Fox; it suits the song very well.
