ANyone know when they might have heat lists up? Not a lot of time left before the comp. :)
Laura
04-20-2009, 10:04 PM
I'm betting on next Monday -- that's when most comps seem to do it, the Monday before the comp itself.
Based on personal experience working on NDCA comps, I'm also betting that entries are stil coming in, particularly Pro/Am ones. You would be surprised as to how many people do their entries at the last second.
etp777

Guessing you're probably right. Just hate when I'm not paying attention to date and look at heat lists (or rather, event competitors under winners circle) and don't pay attention to fact that I'm looking at last year's. :P Always confuses me when I see a retired couple listed as competing. :)

Last year my Scholarship was in the "daytime" and took place at like 7:30pm. This year it still takes place after 7:00pm, but now it's the "nighttime" session. I hope that means there will be more spectators in the ballroom! I'm a cheeezeball and love dancing in front of a crowd.

Nothing cheesy about that!
So how big do you think your scholarship will be? Starting from a 1st round or a quarter?

Hey Larinda, your memory serves you well. It is alot of concrete as only LAX region is. Although the beach is not that far away in El Segundo (the other side of LAX) if you have time to go there. The weather was scorching hot in LA the last three days (making Texas heat look like spring - really) today.....it looks like rain. sigh. Can't make up it's mind.

Yeha, just went through and checked every couple from 08 OSB theatrical and 09 st louis showdance one at a time. :) Only two of the m are doing showdancne there, and not the one I most expected (Figured since Jesse and Kimalee won emerald last year and their coach is a judge, that they'd be going again this year).
Course, real concern is why our pro cabaret couple isn't listed, when last I heard they were going. Will have to ask when I get in to studio. Also need to go find something to do that's more productive than this. :)

you can look at the St Louis program... or just view source...
etp777
04-23-2009, 09:50 AM
Oh, no, I remember everyone who was at st louis (was only 6 couples, one of whom I actually know). I was just looking them up because that's first competition I really paid attention to showdance, so I knew how they dance and could compare. :) THanks though
I'm done messing around with this, going to go do some laundry and maybe even clean.

So how big do you think your scholarship will be? Starting from a 1st round or a quarter?
Was a full quarter last year, am expecting that it will be the same this year.
And most importantly...what are you wearing? ;)
There's about an 80% chance I will wear the purple dress that I've been wearing for the past six months. And there's a 20% chance that I'll finish the tropical orchid colored dress that I've been working on for the past few years :) I should pull it out later today and see how it fits, and sew up the hems. Then I can think about stoning it...I wonder if I even have enough of the right kinds of stones on hand? I don't really have time to order any. As much as I love the purple dress, I'm starting to get the itch to wear one of my own creations again. It's been over a year since I've worn something I've made.
etp777
04-23-2009, 10:19 AM
Wow, you're finally working on that dress? Seem to remember you mentioning it as a never ending projeect several times since I joined DF. :)

etp777
04-23-2009, 05:46 PM
Nurdrms, varies a little bit by wewb browser, but generally, go to view - page source, then hit ctrl-f for find and type in name you're looking for
Oh, also varies a bit by the particular software that comp is using for their site.

Heat lists are posted now for Emerald - bad news for me - they moved Pro/Am Standard from afternoon to evening :-(
Why bad news?
Last year I danced the Pro/Am Standard "B", which was listed as being in the "afternoon," but didn't even start until 7pm! So it's at about the same time it was last year, it's just in a different session.
davidino
04-23-2009, 09:55 PM
it's bad news because I booked my flight giving myself time from the start of the evening session (as I assumed we would certainly be done by then).
Laura
04-23-2009, 10:51 PM
Yeah, I made that mistake last year...I booked myself on a 9:15pm-ish flight out of LAX, and then the Monday before Emerald (so later than this year) I found out that the Scholarship was going off at 7pm, so I had to add an extra hotel night and change my flight.
What was awful about last year was that the Scholarships ended up being at the end of a LONG daytime session, and so the ballroom was completely empty. I hope that by making it part of the evening session, there will actually be people there to watch!
There is a benefit to dancing in the evenings - once you go there, you won't want to go back to daytime . . .
Laura
04-23-2009, 11:36 PM
Are you going to be there Friday night reb? It would be delightful to hear you calling my number while I dance my one little round :)
Laura,
I've got your number and will share it with the entire ballroom!
The good news is that my neighbors might join in (if so, its because you're beautiful) - or they might become annoyed (in which case its my fault for being loud and 'uncivilized' . . . ).
Laura
04-24-2009, 12:34 AM

i had a quick question, I will also be attending emerald on thursday; my first heats are around 9am and then I do not have anything also until 4:15 pm! do you suggest I go home in between or just stay there all day?? What is there to do if I stay all day
Hi tiny dancer,
If you can spend the time, it'll probably be easier to stay there.
Some considerations:
Time from hotel (as you know, around LA/LAX - distance isn't the issue as much as the time takes to traverse is :D )
Other commitments
Time - considerations include time to cool down, watching others to learn more, cheering for others, eating, digesting, resting, warming-up, being ready ahead of time in the afternoon - there may be no time to go home unless you have to
Commitments - Are you a student - bring your work. Are you able to work via laptop/phone - bring it (securely of course there's real people out there . . . ).

Reb--I think you are great, but a man. You left out "shopping the vendors"!!! ;) ;) ;)
In all seriousness, I would not go home (unless you live very close) with that kind of window. Let's say awards for your event are somewhere between 10-10:30. You absolutely NEED to be in the ballroom no later than 3:45. (I personally would want to be warming up no later than 3:15.) So that's only 5 hours. Getting to and from the car, driving...you would probably only get around 3 hours elsewhere. Doesn't seem worth it.
I would watch some events. I find it helps me get/stay in the spirit of things.

Thanks for the laugh! :D
You'd thing I would learn after all these years . . . I do stand a chance of 'following' to the vendors where my main duty is carrying things (ee-aw the mule), or running there 'on my own' if my shoelace broke and my McGyver skills failed me.

Tnydncr287, ok, if you are in Orange County I'm pretty sure your aware of the traffic issue alone. Miserable is a good description. So don't get back on the fwy. Also, you may end up paying for parking twice and if memory serves me it's something like $12 to $17 dollars a day - not sure if they allow you to go in-n-out of the lot without paying again. Stay, explore, watch the other competitors, window shop or really shop, eat. If you absolutely feel a need to get out of the hotel, for non-hotel food or otherwise there is a great restaurant the Proud Bird, on Aviation Blvd (go south on Aviation towards the 105 Fwy.) Why? you can spend some time having either having a great meal, good drinks (well maybe not before your heats (-:) and/or you can release some nerves walking the grounds without buying a meal, as it is filled with historic jets, airplanes, much like an open air museum and their histories. That should help you kill some time. Good luck.

I don't remember seeing this in Emerald Balls of past.
It put a smile in my heart. :D
Paul & Borbala, you're on fire! :D
Excited about Ikaika & Katya too...to my uneducated eye they have definitely improved recently.

How fun! We have had three earthquakes so far...one last night, one this afternoon, and one this evening. Most people felt them but didn't pay any attention. I was in my room for latest two and each time I thought "what a silly building this is where the wall moves and makes that kinda noise!" etp, the couple you are asking about was not listed in the program. And I was noting the results in the program as they were called out.
I know everybody that danced except the ones you are asking about. And when it came time to mark first I put it down to the one couple in the book whos name I did not know, because that was the only name left...
So I will change my above text.

Yeah, they were a late entry (last thursday, actually I think :) ). I'll wait until comp posts results. No worries Larinda. Just impatient because if so, this will be their first win, and only third comp out. So really excited, but trying to be patient. :P If they were all in black, with straps on arms (didn't wear them in studio last week, but pretty sure they're still wearing them for full comp costume), then it was my couple. Or if it was just girl in my avatar here and on FB.

DF meetup was small, just SDSalsaguy and Larinda and me.
The comp was dazzling and exhausting. I was in the front row right on the dance floor.
As someone here on DF said, it seems everything but Standard has turned into Latin. Rhythm is Latin, Smooth is too much open and barely ANY dancing in closed! It made me really appreciate Standard.
Yulia was AMAZING! They danced right in front of us and winked at us and WOW! their energy was very powerful and hot!
JT was outstanding in Smooth.
Tony Dovolani and Len Goodman were guest judges. I thought about getting pictures with them but it seemed like too much trouble.
The high heels and the bright lights contributed to wearing me OUT! I was so exhausted after it was over at one in the morning.

totally agree. I am new to competitive dancing and my judgement may be totally off, but smooth done by top amateurs or pros look more and more like theatrical/modern dance or latin. I noticed that even music for smooth v.walts during Saturday evening session was a latin music - for a second I thought they played a wrong CD or something.

I enjoyed my time at Emerald. I didn't dance as well as I would have liked, but I guess that means there's plenty of good stuff left for me to work on, eh? It was nice to finally meet Larinda, if only for a brief couple of minutes. Had hoped to get together with some of the staff of DF (including Larinda and SD) on Sunday morning but time collapsed on me; hopefully next comp.
Had many friends (both locally and long distance) attend this comp, and most competed and stayed for the evening sessions. Saturday night session was amazing. Round 1 in smooth and quarters in latin. Saw some awesome dancing!
Congrats to Paul & Borbala and Threestep!

Agreed, the dancing was fabulous to watch, with quite the crowd. Didn't have the nerve to walk up to DF meet-up although I recognized several. Between co-dance friends competing with my pro, the pro comps - and by the way, the dance camp was GREAT-with people from all over the world! sore feet - ouchies, and, oh yes, shopping for things I can't afford but fun to try on with all my friends who did and still are competing - time certainly flys when your having fun. One day I'll get the nerve to introduce myself. WAY TO GO Leslie and Alex - DVIDA 3dance winner. heh heh heh. Good luck Alex and Alla tonight!

Yes - that's how I feel - after > 24 hours I was finally ready to review our recorded dances (like to bask in the glow of how I think it must have looked ;) ). Happy to say I definitely saw improvement in the one or two areas we had targeted for this comp. Have a couple months before the next (Palm Desert) so have some time to address overall softness in the tango, I think (although I keep wondering why it is my expression looks like I'm about to murder my pro - I actually think she's quite nice ;)

The Pro Latin was so much fun to watch. The ballroom was packed, tickets were selling at $50 for standing room only! With the exception of Eugene/Maria not attending, the final latin heat at Emerald may be close to what it will be at Nationals. It will be interesting to see how the next few months will develop for all the couples....good luck to them all at Blackpool!!!!! Wish I could go watch....maybe one day!
During the Foxtrot, I said, "I'd like to see some Foxtrot, please." I saw a few seconds of some recognizable foxtrot.
This is bothersome to me too . . .
I do like innovation showing understanding of commonalities and intersection of dance styles - usually pulled off best by a couple with breadth and depth - but ignoring basic movement underneath doesn't make up for a lack of demonstrating strong basics/fundamentals.
Ironically, it may be more exposed when some Smooth couples are in closed hold because it hurts to watch . . .
I love Smooth - I just think that some couples are looking for trouble by walking onto the floor without fundamental understanding of standard movement - doing a spanish drag, a feather, a contracheck etc., on the competition floor next to couples with strong fundamentals is problematic.
Here's some examples (I'm not saying which is which . . . ) http://www.dance-forums.com/showthread.php?t=32362 weight connection is one indicator.
All Pr-am Smooth now posted.

Can't stand the little cafe. 10 minutes in line behind two people. A 5 dollar bottle of Odwala and a 25 minute wait for a personal pizza. I told the manager I thought the service should be better. She gave me a blank look and said "well there is only one register open". I said "yes but there are TWO registers and a whole bunch of workers standing around!".
At least this year they put a tiny snack table outside the ballroom.

Agreed about the "cafe". Several of us went to the 1st floor buffet/restaurant due to time constraints plus the food was much better and the service was efficient - although we had pkg tickets for meals. To their credit, the cafe didn't seem to run out of every other item this year, and seemed to have a sufficient supply of prepared sandwiches, salads, etc. for the first time ever. Likewise, I even got a decent sized fruit salad for the money. That said, the service at the cafe was abominably slow.
Service at the bar was slow to come and rather inattentive at times as well, but was at least friendly most of the time. Whatever "seasoning" they put on the walnuts Saturday night, however, was a very bad idea!
Only ate at the main restaurant on Monday morning before driving back down to San Diego. The service was good, but then again there were a lot fewer people left as well...

I didn't even bother to eat there this year. Had a rental car and knew the area so went out to eat.

Yeah, I have to agree with all of you, that the service was not up to par.
However, was you reason to go there to dine gourmet with an amazing service? I personally was so busy, that I had no time to pay much attention to this. Now, this does not mean I liked it, I just focused on more important things there.

Welcome to DF Gabbycica!
As for the service, room service was pretty quick. However the prices were ridiculous for the food. I think the burger on the menu was $18, then add $4.00 delivery charge and 18% gratuity. I think the breakfast yogurt and fruit parfait was $10, add the same charges.
Last year I was satisfied with the quality of the food, even though it was a bit on the expensive side. This year it was too pricey for the lower quality. The deal was bad enough that I ate at Denny's this year.

Still remembered waited over 20 minutes at the "cafe" last year after comp for pizza and soup last year. Too bad still like this. The service definitely could be better.

Hi Gabbycica, yea! we were really busy in the camp were we not-as well as all the other stuff going on. Nothing like have just a few minutes between classes and onto the next class. I travel enough for work that many times I find the local market - or corner store - get my own stuff for however long I'll be there - and brown bag it (even if I have meal tickets on a package - it just never seems to work out for me )- mostly because service is S L O W....per se - for me, it's a good formula for the dance comps as well. It is really a ridiculous price for a Hilton Hotel hamburger - when In-N-Out is down the street and yes, the well known national menu of Denny's around the corner!! geeezzzzz just put a Hilton Hotel vacuum cleaner in the ol' wallet - the premise being your going to pay the hotel for convinence. sigh.
when In-N-Out is down the street
Hello - we need to remember this for next year!

Hi Reb, yepper, In-N-Out, the most utilized fast-food place of many pilots who have landed and who are taking off (snicker snicker - historically fools most people all ready on board). And if you don't know the secret menu (not advertised) there are 100 code words. The animal style fries (GOODNESS ME!!) would have sustained me throughout all the evening rounds and scholarship. (-: for a whopping $2.50. There's always next year for those who don't know.

HA HA - you may have to have a DF meet up - out of the hotel and at In-N-Out next year. And then make sure to bring some back for others! ok, so, when your dancing and still watching what your eating (maybe!) yes, protein burgers (wrapped in lettuce - no bun), Fabulous grilled cheese, animal style fries (you may want to hold the grilled onions if you have to breath on anyone)- any BTW, you can ask for the fries to be "crispy" cause they are fresh not frozen, and vegetarian burgers (everything except the meat) and for those of you who don't know the code words for the "off" menu such as what the heck is a 4x4 burger...check out the web. I've seen my Pro devour a 4x4 in record time after competing as well as the Animal Fries - after I taught his Russian self what they were. Total convert, now with any competition - he askes "In-N-Out?" Is this an ad? nope, just saying that local food and service with reasonable costs is right there, ya just have to know.....much like any other place. Enjoy!

What are animal style fries??
For DFers unfamiliar with In-N-Out - check out this patron's desire to overcome obstacles in their path to get to In-N-Out

Imagine a hot burger juxtapositioned with cool lettuce and cool tomato - fries that moments before were whole potatoes . . .
In-N-Out was written up in Business Week recently:

OMG, you read flyertalk too?
I want my fries animal style now, hold the pickle:
"Animal Style Fries" = fries with cheese, spread, grilled onions and pickles (if you ask for them).
OMG, you read flyertalk too?
Only for important things like In-N-Out locations near airports . . .

Laura - you forgot the required "fork" to eat the fries, cause the fingers will get messy. And it's a nice plastic attack utensil for those whose foreign fingers try to steal out of your own basket! I grew up with the owners children - went to school together and love what is written on the inside bottom ring of the drink cup. Yep - betcha didn't know there is something written there. Have fun!

actually etp, osb is nice as a newb as long as you go expecting to be anonymous.... and appreciate that you are not in kansas anymore...then anything good that happens is a pleasant surprise, plus, with the limits to what you can dance it actually feels somewhat less stressful, IMO, than other high-profile comps where you are continually dancing ...osb was my third comp...I loved it...was just thrilled to get call backs in all dances... thought FP was going to pass out cold...as he had never had it happen before... :)

Oh, I'm just goin to cheer for friends and meet up with other DF'ers. No way in heck I'm starting out there. Even though others have said same as you, I'll stick with something local for my first ndca comp. With three good ones in town, and then Indana and wisconsin and st louis all within a drive, couldn't start with OSB, would psych myself out. :)
And think we're mostly done with Emerald. ;) Seems it's time to takl about atlanta now. :)
