I'm doing self-imposed research on the music of Salsa. Oh my, I can't believe the stuff that I'm finding. This is awesome:
A 1965 Version of "Cacheondea" by Joe Cuba and Cheo Feliciano. (Popular now by Fruko Y Sus Tesos)
A nice version of "Hasta Que Te Conoci by Willie Colon. (Popular now by Marc Anthony)
Ahhh, the discovery of Salsa Music. Have you made any discoveries in Salsa music lately?

Apparently anything with the phrase que se sepa by Roberto Roena- and I say this because on Amazon he has 2 songs by that name, both very different but both very good.

:D Peach, the more you read, the more you'll find out that Marc Anthony probably hasn't sang anything that is his. A lot of his goodies are from Willie Colon. Perciosa the song he made a huge success in everyone eyes, was already a huge sucess and isn't his either. It is Rafael Herandez's.... Puerto Ricos most famous composer ever, he was ver huge in the early 30s, and was the first latino to ever throw a latin music concert in NY City. He and his sister also had US first Latin Record company and Record store, located in NY City as well. If I remember correctly in 1928.
Anytime you see a D.R. as a composer for a song it means, Derechos Reservados (Reserved Rights), which means that song is of Cuban origin prior to the Embargo, or that the original composer wasn't to be given credit. You can safely assume prior to embargo is the case for about 98% of the D.R songs.
Since, musicians couldn't use them because of the embargo, more so couldn't give credit to the original artists they had to disguiste it best they could. So D.R was born.
A lot of old school salsa songs were frist son, son montunos, guaguancos, guajiras, etc.
The history of salsa is facinating :!:

Yeah, on Marc Anthony, there was some discussion regarding his last album about a few songs that did not get on the release. He wanted to add his name as a co-writer to some of the songs because of the improvinsational work he did on them. A few composers were adamant about not allowing him to do that so he couldn't use the music. I understand Marc but I can't blame the original composers either for not wanting to do that. Since there is a history of composers not getting credit for their work, I'd probably feel the same way.
"Preciosa" is one of those songs that is absolutely beautiful no matter who sings it. Truly a treasure! :D

Wow. Cheo Feliciano has one of the richest voices I heard. His "Un Solo Beso" CD is beautiful. It's a bolero CD but quite beautiful. I also saw listened to Serie Batalla: Cheo Feliciano Vs. Domingo Quinones. Interesting combination. Two very different voices. I love Cheo's "Cuanta Cosas" for rueda. "Anacaona" is one of my favorites as well. Larry Harlow does a very nice piano on this classic. Hard to belive the song was done in 1976. :)

Anacaona was written by Tite Curet, arguably salsa bestest composer. My favorite as well. Anyhow, Anacaona was salsa first mega hit. See if you can get a hold of El Raton, beautiful song as well by Cheo.

First, let me say "El Raton" IS beautiful. I really like it. But, when I translated the lyrics, I got:
My cat is complaining
because he can't play
Where ever he gets into, his cat (female) goes to get him
at night he jumps the fence that's behind my house
to see if he can escape, without her seeing him
and no sooner, no sooner his partying
Silvestre feline has to start running
This is serious my friend
Listen to this mess, what a mess is about to form
When my kitten finds out and is very simple the reason
that he who tells his cat (female) everything (repeats twice)
Is nothing but a mouse, a mouse.......
Uhhh so, I'm thinking, something is terribly wrong with my spanish translator.   Anyway, I looked further and it's talking about a man and a woman and the trials of marriage/relationships. From Cheo Interview : It happened with the group of Joe Cuba, the six guys, we were all married, I was the last one to get married, as I told you when I began with Joe Cuba. The rest of the guys were all married, but we used to go on gigs, travel, on our own, and the wives got together and that's when the gossip started. "Ey, el marido tuyo, he's going out with this chick, and this guy's messing up, you gotta watch out." That's how I got the notion for this tune.
Funny....but I GET IT now.  Really is a beautiful song. Thanks, Boriken. Gosh, I'm gonna have to take out a loan soon for all this music. :D Note to self: Enroll in the next available spanish class! :D

lol.. Wepa, as long as you are taking that load out, I'll help you spend it.
Yeap you hit it right in the head. The song is about a guy who cheats on his wife and he has to hide... eventually a rat (el raton) tells his wife what is going on, hence, "de cualquier maya sale un raton", the meaning translated to "a rat can come out from any fishing net"
That was a great job figuring out that song peach. :notworth:

I heard this slick mambo groove, "Fuego a La Jicotea", while watching video clips one day and flipped. :bouncy: Take a listen to Oro Salsero - Marvin Santiago (which includes this song) Very good music and an amazing voice. I like all the songs on this one. Some favorites are "La Campana Del Lechon" and "La Pela" :D

Marvin has an icredible voice, he actually sang for Bobby Valentin until he was asked to leave the band because his drug problem bagan to reflect on the band, so bye bye he went. Ever since he has done minor work, primarily for Puerto Rican All Stars who I think recorded 4 albums.
A couple of his songs that stand out are, the one peach just mentioned, Fuego A La Jicotea, El Mangoneo, Vasos en Colores, God, I just went blank :(

I really like "Vasos en Colores". I didn't know he sang that until recently. I like "Mentirosa" and "Nostalgia" as well. :) I was looking at Bobby Valentin's stuff today. Bass, Trumpet, Trombone and Sax at a very young age. Very talented conductor. Saw some cool songs like "Batman Boogaloo" and "Bad Breath". Wow, I'm finding some amazing stuff. :D

don't do it!! The first thing I noticed with a lot of salsa songs, which I though were fun and upbeat based only on the music, upon learning spanish, was the many of the lyrics were actually sad and depressing. See ignorance really is bliss. Ok learn spanish, its a good language, I've gotten more use out of it (not to mention a fiancee) then german.

Khalid is COOL! ("Aisha, Aisha, ecoutez-moi"...)I LOVE Rai, picked up a lot in Morocco. Also worthy of listening to is Cheb Mami, who made a name for himself singing in French and with the likes of Sting, so was played on French radio and thus became well-known not only in Algeria, but in Paris!
"Le Rai C'est Chic" is a very CHIC song onhis "Dellali" album.

Oh yes, Dragon is SOOOOOO right about the salsa lyrics. Quite depressing and funny, even. Lots of people getting dumped on. I can understand that much Spanish, but have to ignore the sapiness of the lyrics and just enjoy the fantastic rhythm and DANCE!

Okay I get obsessed sometimes, but some obsessions are good. This song "salsarai", by Cheb Khalid/Khaled does not seem to exist. I've tried music librarians, salsa music stores etc. The best I can come up with is the song by "Salsa rai," which is by a Franco/Algerian singer named Faudel (b. 1978). I think the single-word "Salsarai" is a variant of that; Yuri Buenaventura is a Colombian musician who collaborated with Faudel on the track (from Faudel's album "Samra"). Based on that song, some people have started talking about "Salsarai" as genre of music (cf. http://www.cairocafe.com/Music/inner.aspx?reviewID=87, a review-essay on Faudel).
Any help tracking this elusive song down would be helpful.

Sagitta, if it's the one I think it is, "Salsa Rai" is by Faudel from his Samra CD. Nice song. "Salsa Rai" is done with Yuri Bonaventura. This song is used alot for Casino Rueda. You can find a clip at amazon.com :D

Thanks Peach. Both Sabor and cocodrilo talk about it earlier on in the thread and they seem to think that it is by Khaled. Since they've heard it, and I don't think I have, I was confused. Apologies Sagitta .. i got mixed up about the Rai singer in this song.. Faudel it is.. it just that these guys sing together alot and i got confused.. Peach nailed it tho'.. however, in my taste its not a typical rueda song at all.. more suited for couples that prioritize smoothness.. i dont know but some songs just give me the 'flow like water feel' and this one is typical for that to my senses..

Founded by Aaron Luis Levinson in 2000, and directed by Oscar Hernandez, the 13-member Spanish Harlem Orchestra preserves classic Latin dance music while writing and arranging new originals. Its first CD, released in 2002, garnered the best New Artist Award at the 2003 Billboard Latin Music Awards and was nominated for a Grammy in 2003 for Best Salsa Album

“Across 110th Street” features four performances by Ruben Blades as well as classic renditions of salsa songs by newcomers Willie Torres and Marco Bermudez. The CD also highlights the vocal styling of original Spanish Harlem Orchestra member and salsa pioneer Ray De La Paz, trombonist Jimmy Bosch and bassman Ruben Rodriguez.

As mentioned, Yuri Buenaventura and Faudel (not Khaled, the one thats sings Aisha) are in this song, from Yuri's "Yo Soy" album.

I think remakes are amusing......! I love it when people go  (non-salseros especially) when they first heard it.
There are good remakes and bad remakes, of course. The good ones are priceless.
:bouncy: "Lady" & "I will survive" amongst some of the best :bouncy: !
Can you think of any others....? I might have missed some.

4. Campina - Afro-Cuban Jazz Project
5. Sabroso Como el Guarapo - Orquesta Sublime
6. Mecanica de Amor - Mi Son
7. Mami Me Gusto - Todos Estrellas
8. Boliviana - Irakere
9. Reloj de Pastora - Sierre Maestra
10. Patria Querida - Los Guaracheros de Oriente

1. Chacha la Vie - Kaoma
2. Yiri Yiri Bon - Ricardo Lemvo
3. Arranca - Manzanita
4. Volver a Verte - Oscar D'Leon
5. Pasillos de Tia Conga - Conjunto Céspedes
6. Besame Mama - Poncho Sanchez
7. Son Flamenco - Los del Caney
8. Asia - Willie Colón
9. Carmelina - Totó La Momposina
10. No Me Llores Más - Sierra Maestra
The first is just wonderful cuban music. And the second has a good mix of latin muisc. Both don't stick to one genre, but provide a variety of styles. Any others like these that you have and would recommend.
Sagitta, I have both of these! They are wonderful! Actually, I have the Putumayo Presents Cuba on Cassette and Latino! Latino! on CD!! I will probably be one of the last men on earth still making & listening to cassettes.
Also, I love listening to Poncho Sanchez. (Afro-Cuban Fantasy, Conga Blue, & Chile Con Soul)
Tito Puente's Dance Mania Volume 1 is still the best Salsa/Mambo CD I've heard so far.
There is an excellent compliation by EMI/Hemisphere Records titled Salsa, Merengue, Mambo. Some of the artists are Ensamble Latino, Isaac Delgado, Maria Rivas, & Ednita Nazario. It's definitely worth listening to.
I'm also listening to Ruben Blades's Tiempos & Mundo. He does an excellent remake with Editus of Pat Metheny Group's "First Circle". Pat Metheny Group is my favorite band!

So sorry to butt in you conversation like this. I was actually doing a search on Faudel and somehow stumbled on this thread
The song "Salsa-Rai" is indeed by Faudel and not Khaled. Khaled is a much older singer. Faudel is pretty young, around 26 if I'm not mistaken. Both are of Algerian descent but Faudel was born and raised in France. They both sing Rai and they did perform together so I see how that may have been confusing!
You can find the song in Faudel's album "Samra" (dark skinned/morena)
I thought you may be interested in what Faudel says in the song so I translated it that part. It's basically the same thing that is being sung in spanish:
A new star glowed and brightened our darkness
Our hearts it lit and gave birth to the Salsa-Rai
It heals the wounded heart
And casts sadness away
Listen and understand well the Rai and Salsa
To my brother who is latino and arabic
to the world
this is a gift
to all of mankind
Listen and understand well the Rai and Salsa
Sing and say with me Salsa-Rai
brother
we want you
I hope that helped.
Again, sorry for butting in like this

As far as I know, Wolof is only one of the languages used in their songs, as not all their guest singers are Selegalese. I've heard that 8 different languages  (including Spanish) feature in their latest album, Martina. "NToman" is a favourite of many of our DJs (I don't think there is a salsa night around here where it doen't get played) and rightly so. 8)

Hector Lavoe's Aléjate woke me up today, literally! There is so much drama in this song. I flipped once again. :bouncy: The voice, the strings, the piano, the bass line, the drum line, the horns, the repeated "Yo te quiero mas...." oh my Goodness!
Lyrics
Aléjate de mi no quiero verte
tu amor es una farsa que lastima
contigo yo he tenido mala suerte
English
Get Lost
Get Lost, I dont want to see you
Your love is a fake thing that hurts
With you I have had just bad luck
In my heart that hurts like a sharp pain
I found you like one finds a coin
Rolling around in the streets of life
I suffered, You decieved me; and left me
with the bitter taste of your lies.
It doesn't matter that you treat me spitefully
And it doesn't matter the way you look at me
cause lovers like you are worthless
You find them around the bend in every corner,
lovers like you are worthless
You find them around the bend in every corner,
Get away from me, I dont love you anymore...

I had the song "Che Che Cole" in my collection and never realized how great of a song it was until recently......
From Antibalas.com (http://www.antibalas.com/pages/albums.html)
This record is a significant crossing. Firstly, it is significant as a tribute to the legendary singer Hector Lavoe who first made Willie Colon's "Che Che Cole" a dance hit for Fania Records in 1969. It is a crossing of generations --a venture by a young group of musicians into the undying sound of those who came before them in a long seamless tradition of music.
Stylistically, of course, it is also a crossing into the Latin genre for the Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, a group steeped in the Afrobeat traditions of Nigerian legend Fela Kuti.
It is lastly a crossing in that it is the first collaboration in name between Antibalas and Daptone Records, two families of the same clan. As it is widely known, there is a strong family of musicians in Brooklyn who have been on the cutting edge of the Soul, Funk, and Afrobeat movement for the past few years. Though the lines between the groups often blur and confound, the ties between them strengthen and the result is a hot spot of raw musical inertia giving birth to an unequaled output of soulful music.
As Daptone´s first venture into Latin and Afrobeat (as well as their first 12" release), "Che Che Cole" promises to be a milestone in the progress of modern Soul Music. The A side is an innovative culmination of classic late sixties Afro-Cuban dance and tight razor´s edge afrobeat syncopation. However, the featured vocal by Mayra Vega is the shining jewel that elevates the whole recording to the major league of dancefloor classics. The B side is a makossa version of the same, a la Manu Dibango, complete with rubbery wah-wah and locomotive hi-hat driven makossa beat. Either side is as appropriate for the living room record afficionados as it is for the DJ who is ready to reach a new climax in a room full of sweaty party goers.
" Vamos todos a bailar al estilo africano si no lo sabes bailar yo te enseñaré mi hermano..."
-Hector Lavoe
The Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra featuring Mayra Vega mp3s, there are some pretty funky remixes of this song. Pretty cool. 8) :D

Okay, this CD woke me up today: Cachaito by Cachaito Lopez
I have to buy this TODAY!
From Amazon.com
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Buena Vista Social Club bassist Orlando Cachaito Lopez busts out of the senior activity center with an out-there release worthy of a youngster that draws on five decades of professional cool. Instead of trying to compress the history of Cuban dance music, Cachaito elongates it into a shape-shifting amoeba that can swallow and absorb almost any influence. On "Redencion," reggae-inflected electric organ jabs throw open the door to dub effects. Massed charanga violins stutter and echo as the bottom drops in and out of the mix. The project gets a jolt from figures not usually associated with Cuban music, like Jamaican organist Bigga Morrison, French DJ Dee Nasty, South African flugelhornist Hugh Masekela, and saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis of James Brown Revue fame. But it's the Cubans who provide the disc's most unexpected performances. The pizzicato strings on "Oracion Lucumi" fall like snow in a glass globe shaken hard by a gritty tres solo. Groove-heavy "A Gozar el Tombao" spills in on Manuel Galban's reverb-laden surf guitar. Ibrahim Ferrer comes out of nowhere with a short ascending cameo vocal on "Wahira," the sole noninstrumental track onboard. Cachaito is the only artist to have played on every track of every Buena Vista Social Club release. In lightning-rod fashion, he's accumulated so much energy from those sessions, it flashes all over this gorgeous, mixed-up masterpiece. --Bob Tarte
Songs like Redencion & Mis Dos Pequenas really spoke and lifted my spirt from the floor. I'm in love with this CD already!!! :D

Marvin has an icredible voice, he actually sang for Bobby Valentin until he was asked to leave the band because his drug problem bagan to reflect on the band, so bye bye he went. Ever since he has done minor work, primarily for Puerto Rican All Stars who I think recorded 4 albums.
:(
Did you all know that Marvin died on October 6? I was in Puerto Rico then and you heard nothing else on the radio for at least 4 days. They played all his songs 24 hours a day.
Bobby Valentin and Pedro Brul (La Mulenze) got a bunch of people together for a spontaneous concert "Homenaje a Marvin" in Bayamón in front of the building where his coffin was until the funeral the next day (Escuela de Bellas Artes). We heard it on the radio and went and it was a great concert with Pedro Brul, Pichie Perez (La Sonora Ponceña), Luigi Texidor, Luisito Carrión, Charlie Aponte and Papo Rosario (El Gran Combo) and of course Bobby Valentín and his orquestra.
