A word of advice needed from the competitive dancers...... - how do you sleep with hair style? I am a newbie at this and I am supposed to get my hair styled the day before the comp. (sounds like a torturous night to me! )

I use a satin pillowcase for nights like that. After you have it styled (if you're doing it really late), give it about 20-30 minutes to dry out, don't just plop into bed right away.

And we have some other threads on hair in the ballroom forum too, but I am not that great with the search engine, I'll leave this to the experts.

Yes. satin pillowcase is the magic word. Also, you have to warn your hair stylist that you need this style next day. some of the styles stay better than the others for the next day. you may lso be able to stop for a little fix up, if your stylist working next day, this will take just couple minutes.

I also wear a satin hair do cap while sleep, I looked ridiculous, DP often laugh at the way I look, sometimes I do my hair near home salon, then get on a bus trip to somewhere like boston or DC, I even wear a satin shower cap while sleeping on bus, I know it looked funny, but I'd rather look funny on bus or in hotel room, but look good on floor.

I almost always get my hair done the day before I dance. I actually like it that way. One less thing to think about the day I am dancing. I have never had a problem with it getting messed up. By the time they get done layering the hairspray, I think it would survive nearly anything. You might want to mention that you are going to sleep on it before you dance when you go to the stylist .

I do my own hair, so I just freshen it up in the morning, I have a satin pillow case but I might see if I can find a cap and give that a go

I imagine it makes a difference if you are a particularly violent sleeper too :p

I've done it, used the satin pillowcase, told the hairstylist...it all worked out great EXCEPT that I hated sleeping on it so much that I washed it out anyway. I had it done on Thursday, danced Friday morning, and was going to keep it until my Scholarship event on Sunday but after sleeping on it Friday I just couldn't take it any more!

I also hate sleeping on hairdo too much. I tried it once, did it Friday morning danced open event Friday night, slept on it until Sunday for RS event. My scalp hurts so uncomfortable so couldn't stand anymore, swore won't do it again.

yes I agree and it never looks the same no matter how hard you try.

I have done it for up to 3 nights including a plane trip. I wear a satin do rag over my hair and it keeps it from getting frazzled. lots of hairspray and pins. i set the security alarm off at the airport- luckily they didnt feel the need to search thru my hair even tho i could have hidden all sorts of things in my bun. it is important to have at least one side of your head that is pretty flat without loose curls so you can sleep on that side of your head. it is pretty uncomfortable after a while but definitely doable. The first time i had pins and curls on both sides of my head and was basically trying to sleep on one side of my face. needless to say I was not well rested in the am.

Never thought to try a satin pillow case. But mine is such a mess in the morning I get the feeling that I'm being teleported and dragged through a hedge backwards whilst sleeping?

I also get scratch marks on my chest... don't know how... and I dribble on my pillow. I'm not sure what happens to me at night! :(

This is a cute post! I've slept with mine done up on both sides, and I agree about not sleeping really comfortably with both sides done. But never thought of using satin anything. The things I learn on DF! ;)

Using a satin pillowcase to protect a hairdo has been practiced for many many years, long before competitive ballroom evolved. Me, I could probably fall asleep on a bed of nails, so sleeping with rollers or pins or whatever in my hair doesn't create much of a problem in that respect :p

a silky scarf works too.
