Hello, fellow Tango aficionados.
I began dancing a bit less than a year ago, and now I'm hooked. More and more I feel my social life revolves around prácticas, classes, workshops and milongas. It's a little like when internet and cellphones began to be used widely. You wonder how things ever got done without internet and cell phones. I feel the same way about Tango. What did I do with my free time before Tango? I honestly have difficulty recalling anything worthy of remarking.
But anyway, enough of that. I opened this thread because, as can be seen in the title, I'd like us to share some "insider information" regarding milongas, particularly for travelling. Yeah, one can get information on the websites, but I found in March (when I went to Miami) that in big cities there are so many milongas that it's impossible to tell which ones are worth going to. So sharing objective information about this would be fantastic. I am currently in the Midwest, specifically West Lafayette, IN. The Tango community here is quite small, so there's not much of the "milonga rivalry" politics going on like I hear from other big cities. There are not enough members for that kind of bickering (though there is for other kinds of equally petty bickering ). Our community, though, keeps in touch with other communities nearby, especially Urbana-Champaign (fantastic monthly Milongas there), Bloomington, and to a lesser extent Chicago (teachers occasionally drive down for workshops).
Come May, I'll be taking a month off and will be travelling around. I'll be going to New Orleans, Chicago, maybe Cleveland, NYC, then Seoul, Korea.
If anyone could share information about any of the above cities in terms of milongas/other events, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I am familiar w/ several milongas, practicas, etc around the globe. Regarding your post, specifically, there are a couple in NOLA (New Orleans). Look for ATC on fridays, Lucy's on the third sunday of the month. These are the main 2 each w/ their ads and disses. There will be a new one beginning soon. If you like, keep up with me via PM, and I'll alert you when they do.
When you travel, if you get to my home, you might want to check this.... http://www.tangofestmaui.com/ .

Last week I sat and wrote a letter using pen and paper and then afterwards took a trip to the post office to post it. The first time in...erm...a long while. And you know what? It felt really good. So yep, sometimes going "back to basics" (as in Tango) can be a wonderful experience. But...
Moving on...
GREAT THREAD!! And I look forward to reading the responses from across the globe.

First the most up-to-date link for an agenda of the milongas: http://www.republique-des-lettres.fr/tango-argentin.php
Then, none of our milongas is perfect (good floor, large place, comfortable seats, elaborate food/drinks, welcoming people, numerous dancers, skilled dancers, nice music), you cannot have everything. Depending on what you're seeking you may go to different places. The names below are all mentioned with details in the URL above.
Good floor
La Casa del tango,Milonga Imperial,El Colectivo,Espace oxygene,Milonga Florida,L'artisanale,Olympe de Gouges
Large place/floor: Ailes de tango,El Colectivo, Mordida de tango, L'artisanale, Olympe de Gouges, Tango Barrio
Nice place, argentine ambiance: Le 18, La Casa del tango, Bahia blanca
some alternative music: Hors piste,Le Chantier,Mordida de tango,Espace oxygene,Milonga Florida,Olympe de Gouges
traditional (music, dance style): Bistrot Latin, Red Velvet, El Patio
welcoming people: Le 18,Quais de Seine,La Casa del tango,El Colectivo,Mordida de tango,Espace oxygene,Tango Barrio
skilled dancers: Le Chantier
(comparatively) younger audience: Ailes de tango,L'échiquier,Le Chantier,Hors piste
Empanadas:Bistrot Latin, El Colectivo, Cabaret tango, Bahia blanca, El Patio, L'artisanale
Special place, tourists will like it: Quais de Seine ,Tango Barrio, Hors piste
You want to avoid: Vito,La Sourdiere

I vote for the bloke dancing on the beach ! Ha! Actually, I am not in those pics. Oh, le mystère de bulle de gomme. The guy with the interesting accent is Gawain...unsure of his nationality..never asked.
lol I think I understand your english better.
Funny. I've only been in the US full-time since 1990. But, even in Paris, persons would always say that I sound as if I am from the south of france.
In either language, thanks for the info. C'est formidable. I'll pass it along. :D

In NYC you can find info about goings on in the Tango community on Richard Lipkin's website:
http://www.newyorktango.com/
If you are in New York City on the 2nd Saturday of the month, many people (including one of my teachers) says The All-Night Milonga hosted by Sarah La Rocca is THE place to be.

I posted a reply on this thread, that included a link to a Tango Calendar in NYC and a link to the myspace page for a popular milonga in new york city. I posted it twice - each time I got the message that it had been submitted to the moderator, but it never appeared. I checked the FAQ''s for the board & don't think my reply violated any rules. What happened?

I had one of the best three days dancing ever; The Cambridge All-Nighter was excellent; lots of visitors from around the UK; London, Cornwall, Manchester, Windsor, Norwich, Cornwall, Devon and from further afield: Homer & Christina guest teachers from the US, plus dancers from Russia, Paris, Germany, Holland. The hosts put a huge amount of effort into the organising. Mike Lavocah was an excellent DJ and the floorcraft was good, and people courteous and considerate- irrespective of what style they were dancing; and the range of how people were dancing was wonderful to behold; no factions, just people enjoying themselves.
And thank you to the ladies who showed me a few new things.

Dunno what floor you were dancing on, but I got kicked, trodden on, rudely obstructed and cut up too many times for my taste. When exhaustion had cleared the floor it was somewhat better. I like to think that half of my steps should not have to be avoiding incoming threats. While I have experienced worse, I have also experienced much better.
However, I second your comments about the prodigious effort of organisation, and general atmosphere being good. Salute to the DJ for keeping the tunes going from 9-5. So many people lasted the whole night, meaning Michael kept the vibes positive. Generally speaking, everyone was friendly.

well I dont think it should be a contact sport but dancing close and small and fast is part of the fun. Havnt you heard of the Dangerous Sport of "Salmoning": dancing against the line of dance without toucing anyone? I cant say I came away unscathed but I will protect my partner first so I dont care less about the stiletto that landed on my foot I just had to pause until its owner lmoved before I could carry on dancing. And an apology is all it takes to smooth things over. Maybe I have more endorphins so I dont feel it so much.

This is a joke, no? Please?

"Salmoning" is when you jump into the river and club it to death with a big stick, right? Then you cook the fish for lunch.:roll::eyebrow::rolleyes:

Thanks Angel Hi - Well if milongadicto is still checking for goings on in New York City's Tango community - google Richard Lipkin's guide to Argentine Tango to hit newyorktango dot com. If you are in NYC on the 2nd Saturday of the month (any month) the All Night Milonga hosted by Sarah Larocca is popular, but there are things going on every day.
To get an idea of what some of the places look like you can see some of the performances I posted on YouTube, search for my page - Tangobro. The vids are of performances, not the whole milonga, so you won't see the other rooms in the milonga where Alternative Music is played or where dancers who like the "big moves" are encouraged to take their dance.

I was there too, but from the way you describe things, it sounds no different to an average Friday night at Negracha! ;)

I was hugely impressed by the constant stream of cakes and snacks to keep the munchies away!

Hi everyone,
I'll be going to the East Coast for Thanksgiving and might spend some days in NYC... Any recommendations with regards to practicas or milongas? I went to 2 that I found online back in May, but perhaps as a combination of me being a stranger, arriving too late, and maybe not befriending anyone in an afternoon practica, I felt the people were rather cold. When I went to Chicago, for instance, I felt people were friendlier. Also, does anyone know if a lot of people will leave town for Thanksgiving? Yeah... it's still two months away, but better to plan ahead.
