Hi Temza, welcome to the DF !
There are several very detailed books but it is so difficult to get them. So I would recommend these two ones with all the important stuff free at GoogleBooks:
John Chastee (2004) National rhythms - African roots
http://books.google.com/books?id=yBvvvrydCNwC&printsec=frontcover&dq
Dale Olsen and Daniel Sheehy (2007) The Garland Handbook of Latin American Music
http://books.google.com/books?id=21Gs_pt1macC&printsec=frontcover&hl
Cheers

That is a very broad subject, and there are many books available. I recommend starting with the website TodoTango.com in English where you can read about composers, lyricists, singers, musicians, etc. until your heart is content.

Temza,
Another book on Tango music is "Tango Voices"songs from the soul of Buenos Aires & beyond.Compiled and edited by Donald Cohen. Annotated and illustrated with complete translations. Published by Wise Publications.
This has the history of tango along with a cd with 26 classic recordings by the original artist.
In my opinion a must have.
