Hmm. I don't see anything specific in the latest Jacksonville dance newsletter.

Try emailing Kathleen, who writes the newsletter. If it involves dancing in Jacksonville, she knows about it. And she's very, very nice, and responds to email quickly. She's tops. 8) :D I'm sure she'll point you in the right direction.

Thank you for replying. I really want to know about salsa in Jacksonville because I probably will be moving there in the near future. I have been dragging my feet only because I can dance salsa in Dallas every nite except Monday if I wanted (or could  ) I am not ready to give that up yet!! By the way.....who is Kathleen and what newsletter?

Another place that I use when I visit a new city is this. (http://cityguides.salsaweb.com) It's not nearly as current as it used to be, but it is generally accurate.
I checked out Jacksonville a while back, yes there is in Jacksonville, your best bet is search for it on google.

Hi,
This is Anita, the one who posted this site about Jacksonville. I just got back from Jacksonville last Sunday. Allison....thanks for your suggestions although I just now read them I ended up at a place called Christopher's on Wells Rd on Fri.. It was interesting to see how everyone dances in a different part of the country. I noticed two things: 1. Bachata is definitely more popular than salsa in Jax and 2. the salsa I saw was more subdued than the way we dance it in Dallas....we do alot of turns, spins, etc.. I had a good time. Wished I would have heard from you before I left Allison....I definitely would have contacted you....its always fun to have a running buddy. Thanks everyone for your input!

It's nice stuff, and except for the tricks most of the moves look leadable.
I guess this is as good a place as any to say this...
While I did indeed fly out to go watch the competition, I don't think the flash/trash aspect (as in over-the-top tricks and showmanship) are the important parts of dancing salsa. I'd much rather have a nice connected dance in the corner than having to "play to the crowd" just so that I can be the center of attention for a song.
A friend of mine quoted one of the local instructors - apparently, he asked his class what is the most important part of dancing salsa, to which he responded, "To look good when dancing." I think this is totally wrong, and misses the true heart and soul of what makes dancing so special.
But it does explain why some of the locals are the way they are...

'to look good when dancing' hmmmmmmm  I don't that's really important....I mean it's a good plus but it's not the real reason you dance salsa. For me salsa gets inside my blood and runs through every vein and artery. It reaches deep to a part of me that I never knew existed and grabs me into the music! When I hear the music I have to respond...it's like instinct. I could close my eyes and move and not miss a step. It's like nirvana
Now don't me wrong, I love the 'stunts' they do because they are interesting and creative but I know that's not what makes salsa salsa. You get what I'm saying?

I agree TJ. To me, competitions are "performances"., It truly isn't the essence of salsa. I, myself love to watch and even have favorites but I also know none of the tricks and flips have anything to do with the heart and soul of dance, particulary in Salsa.
Example:
The Lead, in his dance interpretation: Gosh, she's cute, I think I'll spin her 20 times and flip her, maybe she'll marry me.
The Follow, in her dance interpretation: Well, he's cute but he'd better spin me 20 times and slide me across the room before he even gets my phone number.

I could be wrong though. *shrug*

It was one of those things that if I read it on a Forum post, I'd assume that since it's just so outrageous, that someone was merely trolling - not being serious. Apparently this instructor was totally serious about it.
And to JS... yes, I assumed that you weren't like this. And I like your descriptions about how salsa moves you.

JS, i hope you didn't feel insulted by what I said, I appologize if you did, for it wasn't my intentions. Seeing your writtings it is apparent that you dance for a deeper meaning than what meets the eye.
I was refering to the instructor that TJ mention. I appologize JS.

oh no!! I don't feel insulted at all. I knew you were referring to the instructor. I was agreeing with your comment on his response while at the same time trying to explain how different our thinkings were on the subject  sorry...no toes were stepped on 8) .......yet
I would love to meet some of you guys though...you sound like you have alot of fun when you go dancing and since I'm a relative 'babe' in the salsa fold I could learn so much from you guys :D

I'd love to see you try? I love reading those kind of emotions on paper, well, this case internet.
Here is something that I wrote a while back, which might be close to it...
Mambo dancing to this Salsero is letting the desire of the soul deep inside burst out through the pores of the skin, like the eruption of a thousand years dormant volcano. “SI ESTO NO ES AMOR? PERO QUE ES ESTO?” Blood boiling, heart pounding as if it was the first time lying naked next to your first love. Blood flowing so fast through the body I can feel each oxygen molecule caressing every ounce of my body. Body aching because lovemaking doesn’t require attire. The congas keep the beat of the steady heart, the trumpets and trombones cooling the body, the bongos allowing the feet to glide on the hard wood as clouds through the sky, all together giving the body purpose and direction. Face portraying every faceless feeling carried within my body. Shoulders rolling, eyes closed, mouth slightly opened feet still but moving the body back and forth, side to side, up and down, to eventually come to a stop, glance over at my other half, and softly yet strongly guide her through a world of Mambo very few have come to understand.
