Does anyone have any leads on where I might purchase a ready-to-wear USA Dance compliant child's syllabus level outfit?

Thanks in advance for any leads.

Female.
At a lot of competitions vendors are around and have children's wear ready.
Check for nearby competitions and which vendors attend those. Contact the vendors because chances are they are relatively local and ask about children's wear.

Of course you could always go to a fabric store, pick up some spandex and muster together a dress yourself :-D

CCM, Due to the time constraints on this one, you might need to make a quick run to the local dance store for a leotard and skirt...am sure that would work in a pinch.

What about Nik...saw him in Philly last year with a number of young girls I thought...do any of them have costumes they have outgrown?

If you choose to take that route, this pattern makes a nice dress: http://www.kwiksew.com/catalog/cat_detail.cfm?pid=3508&QL=GirlSwimActive
The skirt just needs to be made a bit longer. It does come in a smaller size too, you may need that.

For this time, leotard and skirt it is, definitely.

The only young girl I know Nik danced with at Philly 08 was 10 years old, so significantly ahead of my dd in the height dept. There are some other girls at the studio, and I will look into that for the future. (Of course, as luck would have it, the most plausible candidate has a younger sister of her own.)

I am, of course, totally kicking myself for not looking into options at Nationals! At the time, I guess I thought we wouldn't cross this bridge for awhile yet.

P.S. I think me sewing something would require a personality and skill set transplant! ;)
(I guess I should never say never, though...I've done a bunch of crazy things I never thought I would do since becoming a parent.)

Look at who the dress sponsors were at Nationals - check out if they have local stores. They might just have something ready-to-wear.

I'm not sure who said this, but check with kid studios around your area- the parents might have something they're ready to get rid of.

Surely ballet stores would have the appropriate dancewear in the appropriate size?

Keep in mind that the dress code for children no longer equals "simple and appropriate for dancing" but actually mandates something quite specific, and in my personal opinion unsuitable for dancing. Most of your simple skirts are going to be longer than the rules permit, though I suppose scissors are not hard to come by.

That's what I wound up going with, although I felt that the tiny little tulle skirts attached to some leotards were probably going to be too short, so I added another longer and more voluminous skirt on top to give her coverage to the mid-thigh (as opposed to 1" past tush).

Agree with the gist of what you are saying here.

This is why I would like to receive a dance catalog with a 2-3 child-sized choices in a few colors and the stamp "This is USA Dance syllabus event compliant." I don't want to have to think about it. I want to pay someone else who has thought about it money and have the appropriate outfit sent to me!

ChaChaMama Hi,

A leotard and a dance skirt either in black and white or of the same color will work, as will a dress in one color. The shoes need to have a heel that is not higher than 1.5" and ideally should be a square heel, but since that may be very difficult to find a regular Cuban heel will also work. I'm pretty sure that "A&D Couture" out of NY has some outfits for kids and I also think that "Take the Lead" out of the Boston area was planning on having some appropriate kids costumes. If you'll be at the Summer Sizzler, come find me and I'll see what else I can help you with.
