View Full Version : Bringing in the 20's...
Night opens with a fairly empty dance floor, dj spinning some random latin tune, and the band setting up. First number - "Lluvia"...just like the live version by Santiago Eddie I've come to love as my number one song. I get a big grin on my face and my salsa partner pokes me and ask whats up. Simple wink and lead to the dance floor for the next song was all that was needed.
Clave is all thats heard..."two, three...five, and, eight". We shine the intro until the rest of the band kicks in and then the moves fly. Song after song we ignore the (much flashier) partners and eyes around the floor and dance in our own world. Though the moves were limited, every 8 bar phrase was a new dance to discover. Every 2/3 to 3/2 switch was styled in our steps. Every break in music was met with a deep stare and tension building anticipation to hitting the 1 and flying into another XBL.
The violin solo forced smooth hookturns and never before executed double arm veils that brought us inches apart to flow seamlessly into a Cucaracha side step. We finish our best dance of the night - electric - and glance at the time...12:02. Dancing for over two hours I can only smile and thank my partner for salsa'ing me into my 20's.
At the end of the night we walk out exhausted from the nights dancing as the last song is finishing - "Un Monton de Estrellas" by Polo Montanez.
I honostly can't think of a better way to hit the big 2-0.....7am - bedtime.

Happy birthday, old feller. But you have to be 21 before you're really "in" your 20s....
(Hoping this will provoke a good deal of debate).

Only in the US, GR. The drinking age is eighteen, same as the voting age, in most other places, as I understand it.

Hey Haz, you can buy beer anywhere in Japan! They sell it in VENDING MACHINES! Correct me if I'm wrong but I think this is the only country that permits it!!!

Belated B'day greetings Haz!! Since we don't see you around you must still be sleeping it all off. :) A good idea, now I only hope that they have something great happening on the Saturday I cross another threshold this year. The problem of having a b'day right in the middle of Thanksgiving. :headwall:

Happy birthday Haz!
I'm so envious -- I wish I had known salsa when I hit 20 -- or 30... At least I can make my next big-0 celebration a salsa night. Should ease the pain somewhat.
Have you decided which city to visit on your way home yet?

sorry Haz!.. don't mean to stain.. we're just a couple of ageing guys feeling sorry for ourselves  .. it'll pass once we go soul dancing later.. no worries 8)
Thanks everyone. Sorta forgot that I wrote the post in the first place (7 in the am after a night of salsa...a lot of that time just blurs). Hehe no worries 'bout the age fellas. It's all about how young you feel  . Was an awesome birthday, highlighted by some rocking salsa to kick it off. Finished at an Irish pub last night but I got a few simple spins in with my partner near the end (*ahem*...drinking age here is 18 too *humz innocently*). Age in Canada is 19 in most places and 18 in a few provinces
MacMoto - Ya, I'm going to be cruising down to my partner's home turf for the weekend. If anyone is going to be in the Berlin area for the last week of May then just send a PM 8) . On the way back on Sunday night, I have about 8 hours to waste around the London Stansted airport...if anyone wants to come bring some music and some dancers, we could party it up in the lobby or sumpin :) .
Thanks again for all the best wishes. Oh and btw, everyone from back home who asked what I wanted was tipped towards new salsa shirts and the like 8) . I'll be stylin when I hit my home scene for the first time :D .

For shame, Jenn. I wasn't even thinking about drinking!
Actually, what I was thinking doesn't count, because now that I've thought about again, yes, your 20s does start at 20. I was thinking something different, but I was wrong, and it would take a long time to explain it with no discernible point so I won't.
But it has made me think of something else. When you're 20, it means that you are "in" the 21st year of your life. So maybe that's a new line for some of our junior members in the US when they go out for their 20th birthday. Order a drink, and say, "I've just entered my 21st year and by golly, I want to celebrate!" See if it works....

This is a cunning stunt, it just might work :uplaugh:
And you won't even be lying
