I just read that the movie "Shall We Dance" (the American remake of the Japanese classic) which was scheduled for a summer release has been postponed until October 15. Apparently test audiences liked the movie but felt that there was not nearly enough of J.Lo's presence in the picture so it is being recut. No doubt the test audiences had never seen the original, which is primarily about the male character (in this new version played by Richard Gere). Hope this doesn't end up destroying what may have been a good dance flick.

I'm sure it'll be a much snazzier version than the Japanese one(although the Japanese movie was GREAT!). The social dance scene here is far from glamorous and most studios attract a fair number of elderly people. The Japanese movie really let you get close to the characters' feelings- the businessman going through mid-life crisis and falling for the dance instructor(she's a ballerina in real life!), the wild, toupe-sporting dance student who was able to let loose on the dance floor, etc. I wonder how Hollywood is going to deal with that issue, or if they are even going to try?!

From the trailers I've seen the items you mentioned are all paralleled. Who knows what happens now though. I was already afraid of what would emerge without all of the cultural context intrinsic to the first version... heck knows what nonsense they'll end up with now. :(

Did you take a look at previous movies credited to the Shall We Dance screenwriter and its producer? This movie's going to be ... uh ... a lightweight. :(

Great... well, I guess I can hope for a couple of good dance scenes in Shrek 2... ;)
