Hello, new DF members. If you're like many, you would like to get to know a little about the people you're posting with. Here are some threads, old and new, that I hope will help you do just that. Have fun.

So I have a few questions (http://www.dance-forums.com/showthread.php?t=570)

How old are you? (http://www.dance-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=569)

When's your birthday (http://www.dance-forums.com/showthread.php?t=1251)

What do you guys do for a living (http://www.dance-forums.com/showthread.php?t=619)

A quick question (http://www.dance-forums.com/showthread.php?t=1718)

Getting to know you (http://www.dance-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=3208)

Isn't there another old one called new to the forums, or something like that? I'll have to look for that one, too.

eeek! 565 matches. Does anybody know where "New to the forums" is? I don't want to haveto scroll through every forum to find it.

Hi everyone! I just joined this group after lurking for awhile. I've been ballroom dancing since 1995, primarily doing ECS and hustle since 1997. I DJ'ed ballroom, and swing dances from 1999 to 2003, at a dance studio here in Atlanta called City Lights, which closed in 2003. I look forward to joining in and adding to the discussion!

Hi rockingdj!!!! Welcome. :D Glad to hear that, after a long lurking period, you thought we were cool enough to join. :D

I'd love to get your input on some of the hustle threads. I think they're over in ballroom forum. I hate hustle, at the moment. But I suspect I could really like it, under the right circumstances.

I havent started dancing yet. I have signed up to take dance lessons at a college in September. There are places nearer that i could join straight away if i had a partner, but i don't so i have to wait to go to a place where a partner isn't necessary. I did buy a dance book...I foolishly thought that i could learn to dance from it; it isnt happening  but atleast i can get an idea of what the dances involve.

Welcome camille. I find that videos/DVDs are better tools for learning to dance then books as I can see how the moves are being done.

I've been dancing all of my life, and have an online Modern Bellydance Accessory business that I created due to the lack of Bellydance accessories available to performers, students and teachers of this artform.

I don't know how many times I have walked into a dance-specialty shop and could find items for any other dancer, but nothing for us, and it just annoyed me and drove me to the point of creating my own line.

Keep On Dancin',

Hello, I'm Kris. I decided to join and share my experiences with others who might be interested in improving the quality of pre-recorded audio used in performance. Now that digital audio has taken the field by storm, it is relatively easy and inexpensive to have "killer" sound on a shoestring budget. I have worked with dance and theater related audio for over a decade, and am happy to discuss related issues with anyone concerned...

Hello... I'm new to the forum (as of yesterday) and just found this thread. Thought I'd introduce myself. I'm 42 and began dancing about a year and a half ago. I quickly became addicted and am dedicated to dance as often as possible and learn as much as I can. Anyway, I did some competitions last year, pro ams, couples and jack and jills, and had such a great time. Even came home with a few trophies and $$ too! Planning even more events this year, along with my continuing dance education. I also love social dancing.

In addition to dancing, I am an assistant yoga instructor, but dance kinda took over this hobby. I have my pilots license and I love travel and adventure. I work as a graphic designer and just recently married the most wonderful man and dance partner in the world!

Hi, all!

I've just taken up swing and ballroom dancing a couple of months ago, and I absolutely love it! I started with Lindy Hop lessons, and general Ballroom/Latin followed 3 weeks later. My current goal is to learn each dance to the point where I can competently follow a lead for any of them. (I hate having to sit out!) I've recently started concentrating on Samba and Rumba, and am trying to get the basic Viennese Waltz move down without tangling up my feet.

Medira recommended this forum to me (I wrote the "Green Eggs and Ham" parody in the 'Fun Stuff' folder). Nice to be here!

We do indeed!

By ballroom do you mean all 10 dances?

"Why can't more men dance?!?" is truly one of the mysteries of the universe. The only way I know how to get them over the hump is to tell them a) women will fall over them, and if that doesn't work, b) they can win a medal.... :)

Might be worth a thread on its own.....

MissBallroomBear

Yep, all ten ballroom dances.

If such a thread is started then I will be one of the first to complain! I suppose we could tell them that men with large "packages" dance. lol.

And btw, it seems to me that circulating such a "rumor" would mostly encourage more women to show up, thus causing even greater unbalance!

Yeh, there can be lots of innuendo that is meant in fun but would be 'surprising' to some people from other nationalities. You know, we had full-frontal nudes in a certain show on a regular commercial channel way back in the 1970's. I am not saying that we are uncouth, just in some ways more laidback, sometimes for the worse. The key is knowing how and when it is/or not acceptable.

Interesting. Laid back is not a bad thing. I think we could use quite a bit of that here in middle America.

I remember in the late 60s the BBC2 (BBC1 was equivalent to NY Times, BBC2 was serious art/etc) had a series of weekly strippers as a late-night dance art form. It only lasted 6-8 weeks or so - but it did happen. Bit too early for the UK though!

i've been looking for an 'introduce yourself thread" but couldn't find one that worked so i hope it's ok if i post here!
My name is Anna and I'm originally from Vienna, Austria. When i was 18, I started taking some beginner's ballroom dancing classes and participated in a ball opening together with my cousin who is a great dancer.
Life took a few turns and I am now living in the USA. After 2 and a half years of marriage, my husband and I finally signed up for ballroom dancing classes a few weeks ago :-)
Surprisingly enough (to me) we started out with the West Coast Swing, a dance i had never danced before or even heard of... lol. we love it though! (of course we're learning the Night Club Two Step and a little slow dancing as well but it's just funny because I am used to the Viennese Waltz, English Waltz, Cha Cha, Rumba, samba, Jive, Tango, etc. and here we are learning the West coast Swing. In my opinion it's exactly what I need to losen up more and it's a good change for me since I'm used to alot of structure :-)
well anyway, this has gotten longer than i wanted it to be so i'll stop here! ;o)
I have been reading several posts already and am looking forward to reading and posting more!

Hi everyone, I'm a ballroom dancer from Australia, and I've been dancing for just over a year. My partner and I have been dancing socially but we've started to get into some competitions in the social or bronze and below category. We're umming and arring about becoming medallist but we'd probably have to switch teachers, spend more money, and I just don't think the competition atmosphere would be as relaxed.

And we both prefer balls to competitions - again, more relaxed.

Anyway, I'll stop blabbering, I look forward to spending lots of time on here.

I just realized I haven't introduced myself yet so here goes . . .

Born and raised in Amsterdam (NL) I have made my way to a tiny little village on the coast of Holland. I took a bit of a detour getting there though as I went via London (UK), Almere (NL), several towns in Luxembourg (L) and Igel (DE) .

I'll tell the (relatively) short version of how I got into dancing (for the longer version click this link (http://www.becomingasalsero.com/so-how-did-i-start-dancing-salsa/) instead)

I first learned dancing when I was still a wee boy. My mom was a former A level ballroom dancer in the Netherlands and she thought that dancing was a basic skill that everybody ought to learn.

Maybe it is just because I heard it so often but I agree. Dancing is great fun and aside from that it has great health benefits. But as you're posting on a dance forum you probably agree.

When I became a teenager I stopped dancing altogether though. Instead I focused on martial arts which I enjoyed doing for over a decade.

Looking back it is amazing how many similarities there are between the two. Even though I did not realize it at the time I guess I never really stopped dancing until I was 26.

Then came nothing. For a for a couple of years anyway. I made use of all the usual excuses. “I have too much work”, “my partner does not want to go”, “I don’t have time” etc.

Eventually about 7 or so years ago, I saw a couple dance salsa and I have been hooked ever since. It has taken me quite a while to get started properly though but finally I am now on my way to becoming a Salsero.

How long is ‘a while?

Well, after 4 tries over a period of 6 -7 years I managed to finally finish my beginner’s class in spring of 2008. That is ‘a while’ ;-). I am glad that I did eventually go through with it though as now I am having lots of fun again.

If you want to know more about me feel free to ask. Alternatively you can check my blog (http://becomingasalsero.com) or look for me on FaceBook (http://http://profile.to/becomingasalsero) (just clicking the link will take you to my profile).

Howdy folks!

Was poking around on Google a couple weeks back and landed here; then I decided to join up. I s'pose I should introduce myself, so here goes...

I started dancing just over a year ago when I joined my school's Swing Dance Club. I do East Coast and Lindy Hop and in theory I "know" Charleston, but I can never seem to pull it off in practice ;). Anyway, what did my Swing Club do but go and elect me President for this year (mainly because almost all of our experienced members have graduated), so now I'm spending tons of time trying to get our membership numbers back to decent levels. I'm also in our Social Dance Club and want to learn Tango (both American Ballroom and Argentine).

What else? Other than dancing, I do math (I'm a math major), music, theatre, art, reading, 'riting, 'rithmetic, some computer programming (not yet skilled enough to do anything advanced, but I'm working on it!)

Not sure what else to say... though I have been looking around the profile edit settings and can't find how to edit my signature... can someone enlighten me?

I'll stop babbling now ;).

I just realized that I never introduced myself, although I have over 30 posts. Sorry to be so rude.

I have been dancing for about 4 years. I started dancing to keep DW happy. Yes, one of those eyes-glazed-over guys in the class clueless about where his feet were! After a year of leader's beginners hell, I really started to enjoy dancing. Now I just love it!

Where I reside (Central Jersey), we are lucky to have a wide variety of studios, dancing organizations and universities that hold socials as well as excellent instructors in all styles. I dance most dances at bronze level. My goal is to not have to sit out any dance, so I am an intermediate beginner at Waltz, American and Intl Fox, VW, American Tango, QS, Argentine Tango, Samba, Salsa, Cha, ECS, WCS, Hustle (3 count, 4 count Hustle is very uncool in the East)

I have no innate talent for dance, except for musicality. I can pick out the 1, syncopate, double time, cut time, whatever, without thinking about it. I am a social dancer and my technique only improves by accident! I spent many years in my youth learning Chinese martial arts the old fashioned way -technique, technique, technique. I do not wish to do that again, so I dance for fun. We have made many good friends through our dancing and continue to do so.

DerekWeb, Nice to meet you! And we share the same goal, of knowing a variety of dances, in order to stay on the dance floor. In the 2000's, I took that to an altogether different level, by also dancing club and hip-hop styles. But I digress...

The martial arts training doesn't hurt at all: Bruce Lee was the Cha Cha champion of Hong Kong in his younger days...

Ooo, goody, I found an introduction thread!

I guess I should have searched for one, eh? ;)

I've been dancing for about 5.5 years, American Style Ballroom, and I've been making forays into Lindy Hop on and off the last two years. Like Smooth over Latin in general, but I enjoy almost all of the dances except the really "clubby" ones like salsa and bachata. Tango, Bolero, Mambo, Quickstep and Lindy Hop are my favourite dances, although that list tends to get longer every year...

I had zero dance experience before I started ballroom dancing--and I mean if it was possible to have minus dance experience, I'd have had that. In hindsight, I wish I had started earlier but I suppose there is a time and place for everything and it's never too late to start. I wouldn't go so far as saying dancing saved my life, but it sure made my life more enjoyable, interesting, and overall better; it has seen me through stressful days, outsourcing and downsizing and layoffs and unemployment and I can't really think of life without dancing any more. OK, who put me on this soap box and can I get off now?

Thanx Lioness :) Actually, I was checking "new posts" and saw Amanda post in this thread, hence the late discovery, lol... Otherwise I might have become a "Feudal Lord" or something before I noticed there was an intro thread ;)

Hello Amanda, so what do you like to do dance wise?

Hi. Rob here. Finishing up graduate school in the next year with a Phd in chemical engineering. Took up dance lessons with my wife for our first dance like 2 years ago. We mostly do American style, and I really enjoy bolero, swing, cha cha, and rumba. I only am in it for social dancing, so just for fun. Seems like things are a lot nicer here than in the AT forum section, lol. I asked a question about something over there, and received some rather off-putting replies....I will stick with the ballroom and latin people, lol---much friendlier.

Our AT section is quite friendly and tame actually. Compared to AT forums elsewhere. I did read your questions and the response from a few people was direct but not mean or antagonistic really.

But welcome again to Dance Forums and this time to the Ballroom section.

Welcome to DF, Rob! Ouch, Ph.D in Chem Eng, how do you find the time to dance??? Good luck with that, seriously! I love Bolero, always nice to see others who do as well. Hope you enjoy the forums, the natives ARE really friendly in the ballroom/latin section, lol ;)

well I guess I'm a newbie so I should introduce myself. I've been dancing for approx. 6 years. I started in group lessons doing everything, 3-4x per week and quickly found that I was progressing faster than most, so I started taking private lessons. I now dance Rhythm only, but can only afford to compete 1-2 times/year, as I am a overworked and underpaid healthcare provider :) (actually, a clinical laboratory scientist. I'm the one analyzing your blood/other icky samples). I also dance socially a few times per week. I have found that dancing has really brought me out of my shell and given me confidence (most people assume I already had that, but it is a chicken/egg thing I think). Anyway, I find this message board most helpful and very civil, compared to, well, most every other message board out there.

Just thought that I introduce myself and say hello to the community. I started dancing ballroom (international style standard & latin) in an university club which was about 8 years ago and I have been loving it ever since. I'm on the west coast of Canada and I stumbled across this forum while doing an online search for a tail suit. Lots of interesting and helpful information here. :)

I thought I'd pop in and introduce myself as I'm new to the forums. Any Canadians here?? I've been taking group classes (90 minutes/week) from an independent instructor (female) for about a year now.

I'm not too pleased with my progress, but that's my fault as I don't practice much other than at group classes. And as there are hardly any men in my group, I usually have to practice by myself. I'm not sure how useful solo practices are; my instructor says they are very useful, but still, it would be nice to try it with someone else. Preferably a man :)

Welcome to forums. I am not Canadian but I have friends there. I agree with your instructor, solo practice is good especially if you apply yourself to all she gives you about "how to move" instead of just stepping through the patterns. It's great for building speed in your fast dances. Talk to her about how to get the most benefit out of your practice time. Dancers are more likely to see you as a potential partner when they see you getting serious and see the growth in your dancing. At that point they know you have a common love in your dancing. I hope you find all you are looking for as your dancing grows.

Wow. I've been here for almost a year and I didn't even know this thread existed until now. But since it's Member Introductions and not New Member Introductions, here goes:

My name is Tayo, I'm 18 and I'm from Nigeria. I started dancing in '08 with salsa, but then Take the Lead made me want to see what real advanced foxtrot looked like (which led me to the Baricchis) and what real advanced cha cha cha looked like (which led me to the team of Mario and Karina Smirnoff on DWTS, which in turn led me to Slavik) and thus I was introduced to DanceSport.

I think the thing I love the most about ballroom (standard especially) is the discipline. Though with little-to-no coaching it's been easier learning Latin.

I love DanceForums.

Hi, new to dance forums too. I am 38 and I started dancing less than a year ago. I've been learning latin as well as tango and waltz.
I am into classical music and used to study singing some ages ago. Music has always inspired me. Its combination with dance is just sheer magic, I tell you!
Nice to be with you,
Maria

Hi everyone! My name is Mariah and I've been doing ballroom for a few months. I joined the Ballroom Dance Society at my university, because I wanted to do something with my time. I'm so glad I decided on ballroom, because I fell in love with it. In the upcoming semester, I'm going to be going to my first competition. I can't wait!

I also can't wait to get to know many of you and learn so many new things here.

My favorite dances: Tango, Viennese Waltz, and Cha Cha

Totally missed this thread!

I'm Silmarwen, age 21. I'm a classically trained ballet dancer who danced with a regional company until I went to college where I was bitten by the ballroom bug! I compete in silver/gold smooth/standard/latin/rhythm. I'm my collegiate teams captain and (like my teammates) have developed a habit of referring to anything that has to do with our team in the possessive. (my dancers) :) We're a very young team who is just starting to develop competitive dancers.

I've been posting for a bit and reading for a lot longer and am already so grateful to the DF community for all the helpful info and tips!
