Always have to start this one early. :) Specifically with regard to hotels. They Hyatt is booked up on regular rooms,t hough there's sitll supposed to be rooms in the OSB block (I wouldn't wait though, call soon).

Crown Plaza around corner is booked.

Lofts, next hotel past the Crown Plaza, still has rooms open.

These are jsut based on Friday check-in/Sunday check out. If you need other times, you might need to go further out from the Hyatt, though lots of options in the immediate area.

Wow, and the Lofts in question is $111/night average for those two with orbitz, 185/night average through lofts site. :P

anyone going on package will be fine...also, I believe this is the off year for ohio/michigan game so folks are still fine...not that I would let it go past labor day...but...I doubt it will be much of an issue before then

I booked Crowne Plaza already.

Also right by the facility are Drury, Red Roof, Hampton.

I agree that it's usually easier when the Michigan game isn't in town, but my new philosophy is "Why not book a room?" I'm 75% sure I'm going, and if I don't, I'll cancel.

if I wasn't going on package, I would agree and would have a room by july...but I am sick of walking from the courtyard marriot to the ballroom in november so I am treating myself and going on package again this year...not something I do often anymore...but I will there

:Yep, package holders are fine (for now at lleast), and the game is in Michigan this year according to friend who's big college fan (was too lazy to check for myself)

Yea, but on Orbitz you have to pre-pay, through the Lofts web site you don't.

Yep. and Lofts probalby charges nothing for cancellation, while Orbitz will charge $25. Have to make some sacrifices sometime. :) There's definitely reasons I always check the hotel site, all the online sites, and the hotel membership sites if it's a chain I have account with.

I just tried the Lofts and couldn't get a room (trying from Thursday the 19th to Monday the 23rd). I did, however, see availability at the Crowne Plaza and the Red Roof Inn. So I grabbed a room at the Crowne Plaza at the AAA rate. I got two queen beds / non smoking, so hopefully I can come up with a roommate by then.

So this one is a bigger deal than Cleveland Dancesport, yeah?

ohio is THE big deal...period...hands down

OSB is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, for pro/am, and one of top for Pro too. Depends a little bit on style, could be argued, but I'd put OSB and USDC both in the top 5 for pro competition here in states.

fascination

yes...argument could be made for usdsc as well

Obviously, I'm big on Theatre Arts, and for 08, I'd say this was #2 in the US last year, only because eric and Georgia weren't there (from my understanding, and based on results). USDC #1 because they were there.

But yes, whether you're pro or pro-am couple, this is the place to go. And if you're just going to spectate and see best dancing you can, like I am this year, OSB is STILL the place to go. :)

fascination
06-03-2009, 08:00 PM
sure... just like there are times when ohio conflicts with a major international standard event and sometimes big names aren't there but bottom line is that both are very good places to go to see the best dancing here in the US...as well as a few othercomps that haven't been mentioned...personally, I plan on being at both ;)

I would say for the all-around complete package, Ohio is clearly the #1 comp in the USA.

USDSC (early September) has great pro fields and pro-am, but not much in the way of AM. [The NDCA's version of Nationals for am is a separate comp, at BYU in March. Or at least that's my understanding.]

Ohio (late November) has great pro, pro-am, amateur, and collegiate competitions. There are BIG fields in all these events too. The hardest part is choosing which room you want to be in, as during the day, pro-am is going in one room, amateur in another, and collegiate in still another, and on some days, a dance camp in another! That's a lot of choice!

This brings me to my Ohio wish: run pro-am standard and amateur latin one day, then pro-am latin and amateur standard a different day. (Currently, all the standard runs one day, all the latin another.) My reason: pros who dance pro-am but also coach am couples in the same style can't watch their own couples; people like me who particularly love to watch one style have to choose which room to be in. Oh, and judges who specialize in the style of the day need to be divided between different rooms...though I realize 99% of the judges are probably proficient in all the styles. Anyway, that's my silly little wish, fwiw.

Can definitely understand your reasoning CCM, just one of those things where there HAS to be compromises exaclty because it's so big. So we make some compromises, to get biggest best comp out there. Not perfect, just best we have. :)

Plus if you dress up nice and look good on camera during pro heats you might be on tv. ;)

THis will be my longest trip to spectate a comp yet though, and there's a reason I chose OSB. Longest today is St Louis, and reason I chose that is two of my adopted pro couples were debuting there, so had to go support them. OSB was chosen, well, because it's Ohio. I mean com on. :)

DO IT!

Or wait, and CCM will probably be happy to give you some nice subliminal messages to convince you to go. :P

Luckily, the pro heats are in the evening after the 3-ring circus time, so no conflict there! ;)

I think my odds of being on tv would be enhanced by not being way up in the bleachers, but I do wear an evening gown for Saturday night anyway. ;)

I booked three room nights at the Hampton @ $99 the week after the comp last year, assuming I'd be competing. Of course, I didn't know that my partner was gonna get knocked up. So maybe I'll hang on to them just in case someone needs a room.

Yeah, I managed to snag a room there yesterday...and then last night I tried to get a room at the Drury Inn instead and it was all filled up!

Ohio is the one comp that you HAVE to plan for WAY in advance.

I can pretty much always find a roommate in the block if I have to. This year, assuming I have funds, I have Evil Plan.

Finding a place to park usually isn't an issue. The only time I've run into a problem is when I came downtown to watch the youth dancesport during the Arnold Classic, which was also held at the Hyatt. So many people were in town for the Arnold Classic, that everything was full.
