:D Hey guys! *waves* I've come to all of you great Salseras and Salseros seeking advice from your plethora of wisdom! And I know you all are out there, so please, come help! 8)
Here's the deal: there's going to be a Salsa workshop at my studio in about two weeks. However, it will be my *very first* time doing Salsa! (I *believe* my parents will be letting me go; I'm posting this with the fact assumed that they will let me go.) I'm really not sure what to expect, beyond from what you all have said about Salsa, which is that it's the best! :D 8
So, I was wondering if any of you all would want to give me advice along the lines of: what to expect; mistakes that many first-timers make that I could try to avoid; tips to make learning easier, etc...
I'm really looking forward to this workshop, so I don't want to make a fool of myself on my first try! =^__^= Also, it should be my first group class, so I'm excited (and *nervous!*) about dancing with a lead other than my teacher... (Obviously, since I've only had private lessons before, I'm only accustomed to my teacher's lead; and while he's one of the teachers for the class, it's obvious that I will most likely *not* be dancing with him. So, any tips on getting accustomed to different leads would be a *BIG* help too!)
*hugs to all* Thanks for all of the help guys! I know some of these questions must invoke a "    " reaction from some of you, but *poke poke* remember that you all were once beginners too! (Hard to imagine, I know!  ) Thanks again for being here for me and my questions! *waves*

(PS- Any personal experience stories would be helpful too! )

My guess is it’s a beginner workshop.
I'm really looking forward to this workshop, so I don't want to make a fool of myself on my first try!
Everybody make mistakes in class, so it's no big deal. Don't be mad and upset, get a laugh an enjoy yourself. This is supposed to be a good time.
So, any tips on getting accustomed to different leads would be a *BIG* help too!)
You will properly be facing everything between an ok lead, and an awful lead. The guys have to learn too. Just try to adapt as good as possible, and give the guy some feedback if he need it, and can handle it.
Dance, learn and have fun!

Do you have any latin music? Have you listened to that stuff? If not, then listen to some and get comfortable with it. Another suggestion is try and see if you can hear the phrases of the music. Since you've already done some dancing see if you can count 1-8, through the music. If you get that you will be ahead of many.
I guess that the above would be the most I would advice. Anything more and I may confuse you even more, because how the basic step will be taught is going to be totally dependant on the dance style of instructor and there are way too many to guess which one.

Yup, as Danish Guy says, the "leaders" in a begining workshop probably will leave a lot to be desired... just try to feel what they're signalling you to do rather than just blindly assuming they're right.
Other than that just have fun and enjoy! [non-alcoholic beverage of your choice little one]

*nods* I don't exactly have any of my own ( I need to get some!), but my Dad has that XM Radio, and everytime I get into the car with him, I tune it into the Latin stations and start counting the beats for the dances I know! :D :D
It's really quite a bit of fun! And then I can count through the music, yes, because I'm a band geek!  I love my life!

Blindly assuming things is a no-no in my book, unless I'm just having fun with friends.
Heh, heh. No worries on the drinking; *although* I would *love* to go to a bartending school to learn how to make drinks! But I can't stand alcoholic drinks in and of themselves, so I've vowed to always be the designated driver! (Is that a sort of Oxymoron, do you think? Me wanting to make drinks but refusing to drink them? :D Ah, I suppose that's okay. I shall make killer drinks for everyone at the future DF get together! =^__^= )
Thanks for the advice so far everyone! You too, Danish Guy!

Just go along & have fun....! While techniques are important, don't get too bogged down with rules (salsa is a club dance & still evolving, different animal to the ballroom dances you might have been learning).
Keep that excitment little one  ! A little passion goes a long way  !
*lately I've noticed a young Asian girl around salsa clubs...... in many ways she reminded me a lot of myself at that age :D ........geez I sound old   not that I ACT it :P *

*notes that now everyone on DF seems to be calling her "little one" ... How interesting! :D *
Thanks for the advice! Technique seems to sorta roll right into whatever I'm doing; so when I ask, it's in the back of my head, but I know the most important thing is to just "let go," have fun, and remember that you're okay so long as you're not trying to dance and be stiff as a board! (Be like water... :D For any Cowboy Bebop fans out there, you should get that, but if not, it still applies! )
Heh, heh! Nobody ever said anybody had to *act* their age!

If you have XM listen to channel 94 (Caliente) they play some pretty good salsa (I LOVE my XM radio!!) The only other advice I would give is to really try to follow the bad leads you're gonna get. It will be frustrating at first, but in the end that's what is going to make you a good follower.

Go with the flow, leave frustration in a box at home and laugh off mistakes. Just enjoy it the most you can... remember that salsa isn't impossible, but rather challenging. :D :D
You have such an amazing amount of enthusiasm - that'll help you a bunch.
I'd suggest that you keep your expectation low (as I was doing this past weekend), because you can't expect to learn all that much after a single workshop. Maybe you'll be a natural and just pick it up immediately, but more likely you'll struggle a bit especially since you'll be with beginner leads. Like everyone else, make sure you have fun and not put pressure on yourself to learn everything immediately. It may take you a while to get a feel for it. Everyone learns at a different pace and I'd hate to see you get frustrated simply because you're not meeting your own expectations.

Try not to back-lead! Go whereever the guy leads you. While social dancing, you never know what's coming, so don't start anticpating in class. If you understand the partnering (where you're theoretically supposed to be), experiment with a little styling while the guy learns the proper lead. (styled hands, hip rolls, flicks, flares, etc)
Good luck and have fun girl!

   Ahh! So many things to reply to! *grins* But that's a good thing!
Thanks for all of the advice everybody! I *really* appreciate it! :D My Workshop's today, and I'm nervous (in a good way! -- It'll be my very first lesson with a group! :? I hope I do okay with the other people... )/excited, but I know it'll be awesome! I'm also slightly reassured because my teacher is going to be one of the instructors for this workshop!
Youngsta, Caliente is my favorite station! =^__^= It's so awesome! Nearly everytime I listen to it, I count out beats for the dances I know (so I don't forget them!) if they apply to a song. It's quite a bit of fun for a Band Geek like me!
Tsb, thanks for the complement! Enthusiasm is one thing I'm good at! (And one needs it if they want to go to Midnight showings of Rocky Horror Picture Show!!! Just had one "last night" (read: this morning!) My teacher has said that I seem to be a natural at Dance, so I'm really confident (but not overly so!) about learning Salsa. However, at the same time, appearing to be a natural irritates me because I can't get into the studio very much to learn, so I can't harness the raw talent... :? Money is a *VERY* evil thing...
I plan on wearing a pair of "pipe"-type pants (not type, sorta loose around the legs -- *VERY* nice!) and one of my Hard Rock Cafe shirts, so I'm all set on that! :D 8) So I should be very comfy. I just need to know what to do about my hair! It goes down to the small of my back, and I don't want whoever happens to be my partner at whatever point in time to be: 1. Eaten by my loose hair or 2. Fwacked in the face by it if I put it into a high pony tail... I'm hesitant to put it into some sort of bun though, because it's been sort of abused the past couple days... Eek!
Well, 4 hrs to the Workshop and counting! *crosses her fingers* Wish me luck! And thanks again for the advice!

lady styling to have hand out of the way...
Hand combing ones hair
Hand up in the air
I survive with people whose hair is down there so I'm sure that the ledaers in your class will be able to do the same Sakura.
A little off the topic. Ladies love combs and veils, especially beginners. It doesn't require much work on their part when struggling with turns etc. It does not require advanced skills /techniques, but does give dancing a little oomph.

*nods* Jonah (my teacher as well as one of the group teachers) had said someting about guys having a hand look like one was combing their hair; :? I didn't really get that... =-_-=;;
Go Sakura go!! :D Can you put your hair in a ponytail? I know it's easier for me to dodge that than thousands of strands flying every which way
Actually, I had it down for the actual teaching part; I forgot to grab my ponytail holder(s) 'cause I was so excited and wanted to get out on the dance floor! :D
*******
And NOW, I get to gush!!!!!!

I. Love. SALSA!!!!!!!!!!! My, *GOD* was it fun!!!!! We did a basic (forwards and back) and then a basic to the sides. After that, we went over an underarm turn, and then some move where the guy spins and then the girl spins immediately after them. (I'm going to assume that you Salsa experts know what I'm talking about, and if I could get a name for the move, I would be eternally grateful!)
So, that took up the hour, and we (the women) rotated around the two lines we formed, so we kept dancing with different men.
Best parts:
1. I picked it up *so* quickly!!! :D :D :D I was sooo happy! 'Cause I'd see some of the people struggling with it, and I was grateful that with my previous experience in Latin dance, it came that much easier! (Not to say anything bad about those who didn't pick it up immediately though!!!!! )
2. I really got quite a bit of the technique down! (I'm not sure if my hiatus {sp?} from dance had anything to do with getting rid of bad habits, and the fact that I've been doing this hip exercise** Jonah told me to do to help with hip motion, had anything to do with this, but I found it much easier to move and bring in the "proper" technique -- or at least some of it, 'cause Jonah and his partner Lindsey (another teacher at the studio) did a bit of an improv Salsa show for us, and needless to say, they TOTALLY blew us away!)
3. (On the note of Jonah and Lindsey's performance) I got to see some *REALLY* awesome moves; I got to see my very first Salsa shines! (Sooooo insanely cool! :D ); and, semi-off note of Salsa, I got to see what a good lead Jonah is, and that I'm *INSANELY* lucky to have him for my teacher!!!   I love him! (<--In an entirely good way, promise! )
4. During open dance (actually, they only played *ONE* Salsa the entire open dance time! --Of course, it was done by the Indiana Rebels, a WCS club... :) 8) ), I did this *wonderful* salsa with a very talented lead named Jeff! He was really putting me through my paces, challenging me by doing moves that he was drawing in from other Latin dances (I asked him while we were dancing where he pulled this 5th position from -- if he'd taken it from other similar dances -- and he said yes).
...Actually, he was doing this one move that I'd *never* done before, but he said that I followed it right! :D :D That made me soooo happy! I *did* screw up a couple times though;  I missed some underarm turns, but he was *really* nice about it, and before he left for the night, he came up to me and thanked me for the dance! :D :D :D :D Seeing as how I think he'd done *some* salsa before, I hadn't, and he was *really good,* that really meant quite a bit to me!
5. Even today, first day of finals week, my ceratonin levels are through the roof!!!!!!!! *refer to the great number of dancing bananas earlier in the post to see my current mood still*
The Bad and the Ugly:
1. The aforementioned screw-ups with Jeff.
2. The leads that were bending my wrist in and to a *very* odd angle... Ouch!
3. The leads that were trying to spin me *for* me in underarm turns. (Ever been wrenched around in a circle by your arm when it's being held above your head?!   BAD, bad, bad!!! But I know you Salseros here on DF don't do that to us poor Salseras, right? )
4. I was the youngest person there; but that's not the bad part. The bad part is that all of the men were all old enough to be my father or grandfather, and at least TWO of them (one father, one grandfather) stared at my chest the entire time they were dancing with me!!!!    :x :x :x
--Not only was this insanely creepy in an of itself, and even *excluding* the fact that I'm young enough to be their daughter/granddaughter, but my friends sometimes tease me in a good, fun way, that I look like a pre-pubescent boy (save for a few of my shirts that we jokingly go, "  My, God! I *DO* have breasts!" Because you all needed to know that!). I don't have anything to look at!!!!!! *cringe cringe* So, yeah, that was *NOT* fun, but I laughed about it with another woman I met, so we were having fun about it.
********
So, besides *THAT,* I am in absolute LOVE with Salsa! And I feel proud that hopefully, I'm on my way to becoming a great Salsera one day; hopefully one good enough to give it a spin with you Salseros here on DF!
Love,
Sakura Kitty :kitty:
(PS- ** This all started one dance lesson after Jonah had asked me at *least* twice if I was breathing!  He seriously pulled us to a dead halt [from the dance we'd been doing], looked at me funny, and went, "Are you even breathing?!?!?"   I got a kick out of that! I *was* breathing, but apparently didn't look like it. So, at the end of the lesson, he told me to stand with my feet a shoulder's length apart, and either put my hands together in front of my chest or out to the sides, and just start moving my hips back and forth while *breathing!*
It's actually *really* helped me get better with a smooth hip motion and being able to *use* them in the first place! I've found that I actually start doing it when I'm bored or doing dishes or something like that! :D  So, it's fun.
{On another note, when I brought the fact up that I'd been able to use my hips during the Salsa class, he gave me this helpless look and went, "Great! Just what a dad wants to hear! That his daughter --" He trailed off and I filled in, "Is learning how to utilise her hips!!"     It was sooo funny! So, all of you Salseros who will one day have wild daughters, I have warned you of your perils as she becomes a Salsera!!!    })
(PPS- Sorry this was so long! I'm just *REALLY* happy!!!!!!! :bouncy: :bouncy:

Actually, I very nearly *missed* this event!  If I hadn't gone back to IBC's website (www.indyballroom.com -- If any of you are ever in the Indy area! :D 8) ) on a mere whim, to see if they'd changed anything, I *never* would have seen this event!
What's even more special is that the Rebels, a WCS club, as I mentioned earlier, only do events like this 3-4 times a year! Man, were the Salsa fans Upstairs looking out for me, ne? So now, along with having learned some Salsa, I'll get to start learning WCS -- and since I'm a student, it only takes me $5 to get into their meetings! :bouncy: I'm so happy!!!!

I'm *ALL* there on the drinking bit! I can't stand smell, taste (you know, you get offered a sip at Christmas or New Years), or *ANYTHING* about alcoholic things! Even if it's got a really sweet flavor to it, all I'll taste is the alcohol in it. Eww!
....The ironic thing is that I *really* want to learn how to *make* drinks! =^__^=;;; I know it sounds weird, but I think making drinks is fun! My Granddaddy taught me how to make a pretty nice Manhattan, 'cause my Nana drinks those. :D
I love water (only when exercising, like on DDR! :D ), and then Dr. Pepper or Strawberry Passion Awareness Frutopia (which is now, I believe, Strawberry Passion Minute Maid, or something like that)! (Of course, Coca Cola in glass bottles are the *utmost* in cool! If anyone knows where I could still find Dr. Pepper in a bottle, then I'd go for that!)
