The topic on sharing the music made me think of an issue my wife and I have noticed.
Some competitions have great sound systems, with speakers mounted on the floor that provide strong bass-level notes so you can feel as well as hear the beat. I've found this to really empower my performance as it offers extra energy and makes the whole thing highly enjoyable.
Other competitions have weak ceiling-mounted speakers, often just the ones that are built into the hotel's ballroom. The bass is almost non-existant making the music sound weak and lifeless. I find that during those events I have less energy and sometimes even find it hard to hear the beat because there is too much midrange and not enough of anything else. The Slow Waltz in particular seems affected by this, as some Waltz songs rely so much on the very subtle sound of the bass to establish the beat and when you don't hear it the beat is a big question mark.
How does the sound quality at a competition or social dance affect your dancing?
