View Full Version : Report on the 2004 Mayan Competition

Ok, I flew into L.A. where I met up with a friend so that we could go check out this year's Mayan Competition.

For those of you not familiar with it - Club Mayan has an annual competition where they give out $10,000 worth of prizes to the best performances by professional salsa dancers. There are 3-4 rounds with an International/Out of State category going up against locals. This year, 3 couples qualified from Int'l/Out of State while there were 5 local couples. The Semi-finals for Int'l/Out of State were Friday, and the overall Finals were on Saturday.

Turns out Friday was still Hip Hop night even though they were having the competition. A bit of a disappointment, but the competition was entertaining. Only cost $5 to get in if you got there before 10:30PM.

Like most competitions, there was some controversy. My friend and I (as well as other people we talked to) liked the couple from Portland, but they didn't even qualify for the next round. Guess we'll have to take another look at the clip once it's posted.

In the Finals the next night, it was already more crowded than the previous night (cost $15 to get in). Got in about 6-10 dances before everyone started trying to find a vantage point to watch the show. I'd suggest you find yourself a seat early even if it means shortchanging yourself on the dancing.

It was your typical mixture of shines, amazing spinning, flashy styling, and fantastic tricks. My favorite couple won it, while my friend liked the couple that came in 3rd. I do have to say that the crowd was over-the-top in their rooting only for the locals. C'mon people, at least give some polite applause! Rather embarrassing, if you ask me.

Johnny Polanco was playing for most of the night. He was incredible!

Unfortunately, after the competition, the floor got way too crowded. It did open up at one point, so I quickly asked two gals to dance but neither wanted to. It was at this time, both my friend and I decided we had had enough fun for the night as they were starting to play more and more hip-hop (as we had been warned by the locals).

Things I learned:
Park at the lots a block north of the club - street parking is free (apparently), although it was worth it (to me and my friend) to pay $3 and have a security guard watch all the cars in his lot. If you don't pay attention to the signs right next to the club, you'll get scammed. The signs read (I kid you not!):

Parking $3 Dollars for each 1/2 hour, $10 Max

Also, they're quite picky about dress code. No khakis, no baggy clothes, fashionable jeans ok. We saw at least 6 people get turned away at the door because they didn't dress up well enough. The bouncer sent me back to my car as I was carrying my backpack with my Blochs in them. He allowed me (grudgingly) to bring them in on my shoulder, while wearing nicer shoes on the way in. I'd suggest skipping the entire controversy by wearing nice shoes that you can dance in.

They check you quite carefully for weapons, etc. No chance of sneaking in with a digital camera either!

It was a typical salsa club scene. Way more crowded than any other club that I've been in (and I've been to quite a few crowded clubs). I wouldn't say that the dancers are light years ahead of my local scene as the ones I danced with, I would classify as being from Improver to Intermediate levels. My friend said he danced with a couple of Advanced gals.

Most of the better dancers dance up on the stage area or on the borders. Another good place to dance is right next to the stairs.

Other highlights:
Go to Thai Town! I thought the Thai food in Seattle is good - but oh... my... god... I had some of the best Thai food ever in Thai Town. I'll have to track down the name of that place (warning - do NOT get "medium" heat unless you expect what most places will label as "hot").

L.A. traffic is all that it's rumored to be...

In general, I found the L.A. dancers to be both nice and polite. Not really any "attitude" problems like I have encountered in other big cities. I am really curious to check out smaller clubs in the future. Next time, I guess! I think what sets L.A. apart from other cities is the sheer number of talented instructors.

Bodes really well for those of you going to the L.A. Congress! Have fun, I'm jealous!

That's awesome TJ. Thanks for the recap! :D

Great recap tj! From my experience the Mayan is definitely not the place to go for the great dancers. They just don't go there, it's a meat market. There may have been a few there because of the competition, but normally it's just not the spot to be. Check out Montecristo's or Granada on Saturday and DEFINITELY hit Sportsman's on Fri and Steven's on Sunday. That's where you'll see the serious salseros/as.

Lol! Thank you muchly, SC.

I briefly met and chatted with the two couples from Sydney who competed. They were really nice, and my friend and I took pictures for them (in front of the Mayan).

It's certainly tempting. Depends on how much vacation time that I've got available. I've only been working at this present job for <1 year so I hardly have much available vacation time. :(

Is there a website about the Sydney Congress?

Not that I know EVERYONE in Sydney, but just out of interest, who are they :? .....? Please post the photo at DF Photo Album :P !

I'm sure JohnnyWalker or other DF members in Syd would know them.

The Sydney Congress is in October 2004. Here's a link to it. You'll find only a short one liner about midway down the page -

http://www.sydneylatinfiesta.com.au/

I would LOVE to get a little DF Reunion happening this Oct, in Sydney (spring!). Then I would love to arrange (rent a van and drive?) everyone to come partying down in Melbourne after that....! (It would be my ultimate birthday party, no less  )

:D So who's interested........?

Same youngsta... no dates, times, locations, or even contact information for 2004. Seems that would be up by now, no?

Sorry, guys  .......the people behind this website is a bit slack when it comes to updating......I've Googled, the same website came up.

All we know is that it's on Oct, possibliy late Oct.

Albert Torres has something to do with it, so maybe it'd be on his site...?

Or you can contact Oliver direct: info@latinmotion.com.au

JohnnyWalker, any updates....?

Err... let me re-state my earlier comment:

I took photos of them, for them. In other words with their digital camera so that they could get pictures of themselves in front of the Mayan.

If you know of some Sydney salsa links I could look them up. One was quite distinctive as she was a tall redhead. Very nice body movement, very graceful and poised. She and her partner were well matched and had nice connection and flow. The other couple was impressively athletic although a bit stiff.

Bugger. I'll have to contact them and find out. Haven't been to Salsa for a while. I moved to the northern suburbs of Sydney (closer to where the school was located) and they promptly moved to the southern suburbs. Maybe they're trying to tell me something .

Anyway, will see if I can get more current information.

So I take it that the October Sydney Congress isn't an Albert Torres event? Albert's pretty good at keeping his website (http://www.alberttorresevents.com) up to date and it's not listed there either.

Funny enough, the Sydney website says it is :? .......I will try to sus it out from this end........unfortunately my closest contacts are generally Latino musicians who don't have much to do with Congress type things :( .

Hmmm, two diffrent events -- and some confusion between them -- methinks...

The Octobver event, the SYDNEY LATIN FIESTA, doesn't seem to be Albert Torres relatated.

I'm guessing that the Sydney Salsa Congress, the one in January, is more likely to be the one that Albert is involved in, no?

Pacion

Okay, my somewhat out of date information is this:

The event is January is not connected with the event in October.

The October event (unless they have had a bustup) is co-organised by Marcia of Latin Dance Australia and Oliver and Natalie of Latin Motion. They were in talks with Albert to be "supported by" or be "in association with" but, if it is not on Albert's website, either it is too early OR he is no longer involved. I think it might be the former rather than the latter as it is my understanding that Marcia and her team have been doing lots of LA Congress related stuff such as hosting competitions for local teams/couples to be subsequently selected for the LA Congress (or maybe that was part of the event held around the same time last year? ) Albert and Maya were in Sydney at this event also.

The January event is a different one, organised by someone who I am vaguely vaguely familiar with (I think), by the name of TJ (but no connection to you, tj  ). He & those he worked with, did an event about 2 years ago, around Christmas/New Year's time. The very rusty (and possibly incomplete information) I had was that there were mixed reactions to the event. Hopefully they have been able to sort out their previous problems? Whether they may have linked up with Albert? I don't know.

The event is January is not connected with the event in October.

You are spot on, Pacion! The January one (which is NOT the X'mas/NYE one) is Bacardi Festival. Internationl musicians (plus local/national bands) are the focal point here, NOT the dancers. As far as I know, there is another smaller version of such festival in Oct (?), which generally doesn't involve big-name international acts. This event may or may not coincide with the Salsa Congress.

My contacts are generally involved in this type of 'musicians' events, so I get very little information on the 'dancers' events :( ......hopfully this will change soon, as I'm still meeting everybody.

Right now, Oliver, Marcia & the others are focusing on L.A. Congress, as all my local dancers are (to a somewhat lesser extend). Everyone will be flying out this week. Things in the home front will not get much attention until their returns.

Let's hope we get the updates soon. I would absolutely LOVE to make this DF Reunion happen, with or without 'the plan' !

Pacion/Salsachinita

You are both correct. It seems there is no real information available as yet. I'm not able to get much in the way of details but it seems to be a case of 'watch this space' at the moment.

Whatever information I can get hold of i'll pass along.

The October event (unless they have had a bustup) is co-organised by Marcia of Latin Dance Australia and Oliver and Natalie of Latin Motion

The Sydney scene is a funny one. So many 'bust ups' and the like. I remember years ago when Oliver and Mauricio (of Ruedisima) taught together. They also use to have Rueda nights at the University of NSW Roundhouse. But then they split because of differences. One of the instructors that used to be in Latin Motion then went with Mauricio (they had started dating) but then she returned to Latin Motion (they separated) and now she's somewhere else.
It's just like Days of our Lives!!! (not that I watch that show)

    I soooooooo totally understand, JW! I reckon the salsa scene dramas can be a lot more intriging then TV soap/tele novela  !

We can *almost* start a fun thread on this :P ! (except we still have to live & dance somewhere  )

That is so true. The salsa world (actually, dance world) seems so small that everyone seems to know or has heard of everyone else.

I was actually trying to find the phone number of a guy I used to go to Rueda, Salsa and Ballroom with. He might have more information. He seems to go from one school to the next and back again. He was with Latin Motion, he's been with Marcia and he has had a spell as an instructor with Ruedisima. In his travels he must have surely heard more about what's happening!!

Will keep you posted.
