westiemonkey,

I'm not sure of WCS dancing, per say, each and evey night or weekend in Monterrey, but there are a few well-known swing events held there . . . most notable is "Monterrey Swing Festival" in January of each year. Most of the females listed in your website's poll (Whos' your favorite female pro?) attend this event.

By the way, I am and have been, ad member of WestieMonkey.com for a long time . . . are you a "staff member" of that site???

Ah, here's something (http://www.dancefever.biz/Hotspots.html), linked from Jim Ewing's newsletter (http://www.resdc.org/DancinStuff.html). Pretty sparse pickings but at least there's something going on. Really your best hope is to drive to Santa Cruz, though, or even San Jose if the timing is right for one of the Sunday dances.

I would suggest emailing the person that runs SwingWorld for more information. There are various events that happening around the area, I think, but I'm not from Cali. There's Memories in Whittier, Tia Juana's, and some other westie venues. it's a happening place in the OC.

The LA area indeed has a good deal of swing dancing, but I'm not sure if you realize that Monterey is about 250 miles north of Orange County. The Swingworld site doesn't have anything to do with social dancing in Monterey. It is Skippy Blair's business website, and happens to mention a teaching event that she runs there once/year in conjunction with the Monterey Swingfest - along with similar events in conjunction with other swing comp weekends elsewhere in the country.

Thanks for that info jon,

My wife and I frequently stay in Monterrey/Carmel, and have yet been successful in finding a place to WCS, etc. Most places end up being "near-fist-fight-rock and roll dance places . . . hell, we got more WCS dancing in back at the hotel in the hot tub!

To Vince A: Yes, I am a staff member of westiemonkey.com and I knew about Monteray Swing Fest.... but am surprised that there is no WCS weekly dances, no even one.... Christ, Robert Royston lived either in Monteray or right outside.....before he moved to NYC.

To Jon: THank you for the additional info....... all info is helpful.

To Swinginstyle: I emailed SwingWorld.. but haven't received an answer yet... Things just seem to happen quicker on message boards....Oh! and yes, LA/ OC area has a great deal of WCS dances.... they also, seem to advertise it more then the northern Cali.. or there just aren't as many dances in the North.

But THANK YOU to all you responded to my post.

 :D

There are quite a few dances in the Bay Area, but the organizers do not incessantly post announcements about them on rec.arts.dance - unlike the LA event organizers, who appear to feel that a worldwide group is a suitable place for local event announcements. Perhaps that's what you're seeing.

I do not understand why so many LA WCS dancers feel compelled to drag out their dirty local politics and personal squabbles onto r.a.d. It's made the newsgroup worse than useless, and given the entire area scene a bad reputation.

Alright, I admit I was unfamiliar with California's geography when posting that. However, that was the only good resource I could think of.

Sunday nights at the Blue Fin in Monterery the have East Coast swing. I have not been there yet, but I intend to. (Just found out about it) There are Country dance lessons on Tuesday nights at Doc Ricketts Laboratory (on Franklin St) and open dancing afterwards.

I've been looking myself and if Ilearn anything new I'll let you know.

I'm am local to the area, but not a WCS dancer (darned AT!)

But the links page of the Chautauqua Hall dance club is probably your best resource at pgdance.org

Pat Eodice probably does more promoting of WCS in the area at his own site of dancefever dot biz and shallwedancepg. Over the hill at Steppin Out in Sunnyvale, you have Richard Kear and others. Starlight Dance club also in Sunnyvale has WCS on certain nights.

I think the Blue Fin on tuesday is more East Coast style and the floor is pretty small.

Give this site a check . . . I didn't go over it 100%, but it does list some places - north and south CA, and all places in between!!!

http://www.wcs-dancer.com/SwingClubDances.html

Then go to "Home" on the site . . . pretty informative site, yes?

There is also a WCS dance club in Santa Cruz that we used to go to when we lived there. They have WCS dance lessons every Tuesday and once a month Sat. dance.

We were planning on being there, as Care's previous Pro lives there, and we usually stay with them, but . . .

I'll be playing (bass and guitar) the night of June 30th, July 1, 2, 3 and during the day on the 4th . . . I couldn't turn down the fun of playing, and oh yea, the $$$ that come with it.

We will be there (Phoenix to Scottsdale areas) sometime in late July or early August to look at houses . . .

Why . . . yes, we are. All depends on the work availablr my wife. She's 10 years younger than I and she wants to keep daning, and at her level - it's expensive.

So, if she can find a job as an UNIX System Administrator or Senior System Engineer (she also does Linux and all the other related stuff), we're there!

In that case you can come up here in the cool pines when you want to escape the summer heat in the valley.

Your looking at houses reminds me, one of the WCS club dj's is a realtor.
