what is/has been your favorite salsa setting/venue/location thus far.. the place that u enjoy(ed) best? on the beach .. on a cruiser.. a club with a unique setting.. open air venues.. etc.. and where?
for me, we used to have nights on the roof top of a Cruiser on the river Nile.. the decor was mostly bamboo wood and designed to immitate the 'island scene' .. it was open air and the view was gorgeous as u could see the city spread out with lights at night not to mention the river itself and stars in the sky :P ..it was really a great mood setter and helped promote the salsa scene here alot..
unfortunately.. the nights there are no more :( .. hope it comes back some day..

Pinnacle Club in Denver on the 38th Floor of the Qwest building. Great floor and a gorgeous view of the Denver night skyline.

Hmmmm......let's see:
-- St. Kilda beach at an open-air cafe, right on the beach front, steps away from the sand, during Sunday sunset in summer monthes
-- Alumbra, this Morocan style bar in the riverfront (used to be part of a shipping wharf). Rueda under the stars in warm summer air
-- Darling Harbour, Syd Bacardi. Dancing 5-in-a-row with CapricornDancer on the balcony of Port Orient (Chinese Restaurant/Salsa club).
-- Lakeside Seattle, Lattitude ? summer 1999. Great view to the lake!

Out next to the Hudson river in NY City peer 21st. It wasn't the setting but the energy there that night. It was unbelievable, I've yet to date, dance as good as I did that day. The band was, Jimmy Sabater Y Sonboricua, there must have been over 500 people dancing. It smelled of late afternoon just before the sun sleeps. A smell particular to NY City, guys, I'm not talking about the stench from the subways, but that smell that says, YOU ARE IN NY CITY! Ever since a boy I can remember that smell, whenever someone opened his or her suitcase freshly arrived from NY City, you just knew where they’d been.
There was just something there that evening, for the very first time my energy didn't get lost in the vastness of an open air event. It wasn't the kind of dancing that is deep soul connecting, but rather the equilibrium of energy finally reached at a place where East, West, North, and South was infinite. That has been my favorite spot to dance in. The sight of the river, the tall buildings at one side, a zenith which was there but I couldn't see, yet became part of. That is definitely the bestest place, and to date, my mostest favortiest bestest place to dance. I think. hehe

Was that the event where your dad demonstrated his great picture taking ability? :D :P
I haven't gone out to many Salsa venues...only 5 or 6 that I can think of in my few months of dancing. I'm not sure what my favorite is...my Salsa dancings spots are ever expanding and changing...but I do love my regular Sunday night venue...;)

This is interesting - when I think about my favorite settings, I tend to think more about my favorite dance experiences more than the actual setting. In that, having a particularly nice dance sticks out in my mind much more than how good the club/music/DJ/environment was.
But staying on topic, I really liked the Vancouver Rowing Club from last October's Congress. Nice floor, you could go outside and enjoy the fresh cool air right there on the bay. Very scenic.
My favorite local place would be the Century Ballroom. Huge floor, lots of dancers, no smoking, cheap entry fee.

Yeap, that's the one, I always look back at that day. Wondering how in the heck I managed to dance the way I did. At the end of the night a photographer from germany came up to me to say that he was taking pictures of me and used a bunch of roles on me and my lady, then went on to ask if I was a professional, and if I could sing a disclaimer form that if case he used the pics in his magazine. I laughed and said my friend, I don't even know my left from my right, but I did sign the form. Wonder if he ever used the photos. Hmmmm, I should have asked his name at least.
I have not yet had my ideal salsa experience. There are certain things my ideal salsa experience would include:
1) A good live band,
something about a live band makes me feel more of the energy.
2) An attraction, to a dancer
There should definitely be a certain someone around. I think it may
be better if you haven't gotten to know them too well, I wouldn't know
since I have never had a serious relationship with a dancer before.
3) Alchohol,
Even though I don't drink very often the presence of alchohol makes
the setting a bit livelier.
4) A good amount of people for the venue,
I can't stand too many or to few people,
With too many people it gets to crowded, with too few it kind of gets
depressing also I like dancing with alot of different people.
5) I have never had an outdoor salsa experience, but I would imagine
that an open air venue would be better than an enclosed one.

Vin, your list is interesting.
1) A good live band,
Danced to live music last weekend and weekend before. I definitely agree with you -- it was electric!
2) An attraction, to a dancer
I have a feeling that I'd actually enjoy having all my favourite leaders in one place than just having a certain someone. Then again, having a relationship with a dancer might change that...
3) Alchohol,
I can't say I've noticed...
4) A good amount of people for the venue,
Yes -- not too quiet, not overcrowed.
5) I have never had an outdoor salsa experience, but I would imagine
that an open air venue would be better than an enclosed one.
Er, depends on where you are. In Scotland (especially West of Scotland), open air may not work too well for dancing. Let's see, you can have:
Wet,
Windy,
Wet and windy,
Clear and cold (clear nights are never warm in Scotland), or
Dry, warm(ish) and with swarms of midges about, ready to suck you dry.
My best salsa experience to date was at the Merlin in Edinburgh -- nothing spectacular to look at, but it has good music (95% salsa) and a good, large floor, most of my favourite dancers turn up there regularly, and hardly any non-dancers wander in. Just a good place for non-stop dancing. Now if they could bring in a live band and all my favourite Glasgow dancers without making the place too crowded, it would be pretty close to perfect for me!
Sagitta

1) live band
2) A good number of people, or a packed crowd that knows about dance etiquiette
3) no alcohol
4) good dance floor
3) location--A place high up with good views, outdoors, or indoors with a good set-up

Until now I've danced in smoky clubs with cruddy floors or dance studios which are sometimes a bit too "tame" for me(I prefer the club mood/atmosphere).
Ideally, I would like a live band, but a competent DJ would suffice, a full bar, a decent dance floor, a water fountain, clean restrooms where you don't have to "wade" in your dance shoes(yes, done that many times- YUCK!) and place to put yer stuff.(Some clubs have coin lockers here!)
Good lighting (i.e. dimmer switches) to be able to adjust the mood to the dancers, would be nice, too!
Recently, I've been enjoying the smaller venues in town. The floor tends to be less crowded and people seem to be less on edge, too.
I have an interesting observation - there seems to be a general consensus on DF that live bands are preferred over DJ's. In my experience IRL, it's the opposite. Most of my friends over the years prefer a good DJ over a band that plays 15 minute songs with bad acoustics and changing rhythms.
Not that it's important or anything, but I do find it interesting how different it is.

Same here!
I think DJ's are a safer bet though, since even if they're playing garbage each song is typically only 1/3 as long...
I was going to agree, but then I realized I disagree, a good/mediocre dj is better than a bad band, but nothing upsets me more than a really bad dj.
A really bad dj plays 10% salsa when it is a salsa night,
will start to mix the salsa songs together,
and all other sorts of really irritating things.
My preference is
Good band
Mediocre Band
Good DJ
Mediocre DJ
Bad Band
Bad DJ

But they work just fine since we're horny.
Remember always that no means yes,
Oh mamacita, do I love your dress!
Stare into my eyes
You'll find a surprise
Look closely at my face
And welcome my warm embrace
Stand tall with me in your arms
That way you'll fall for my over used charms
Kiss me once, kiss me forever
Don't say no, and don't say never
Beware of men from a land far away
We're coming ladies, and we're here to stay! *

Ingredients for taming a scorpian male:
1 large cauldrun
3 frog legs
1 hair from the tail of a zebra
2 Kentucky Fried Chicken, chicken wings
2 bright red strawberries
3 glasses rabbit's milk (yes, rabbits do not produce milk like cows do, so if you did find a rabbit that produced milk, it would be magical in deed!)
1 glass chardonney (for you! Not for the brew  )
Put all he ingredients into the cauldrun and bring to the boil. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
What happens next? I don't know. I have run out of ideas

Hands down, the Cannes International Salsa Congress.
Dancing on a very nice dance floor installed on the beach of one of the most beautifull hotels in town, and that stops less than 10 meters from the waves, believe me, this is the best place ever to dance.
You get the sun, the seaside smell, the wonderfull sea wind, the warmth of the sun fading into the freshness of a comforting summer night as you dance the night away...
I was a beginner Salsero last year, and the litle salsa I did know was mainly cuban whereas the congress, as most are, was mainly mambo.
So I danced very very litle, and still had a wonderfull time. I cant wait to leave in 2 days now and get back there, dancing well enough that I now can dare invite anyone for at least one song... which opens for a lot of dancing before I have to invite the same follow again :D
But better than words, let me check if I can find a pic or two

Sabor and ScorpionGuy.... ....I suppose I should answer the question, so I have two answers:
1. So long as I have a good lead or two around, I think I could be happy nearly anywhere... I'd like sanitary conditions at least!
2. I *really,* REALLY love the Ocean! (Nana and Granddaddy live a mile from the Beach {Gulf of Mexico side}, and actually have part of the Gulf in their "backyard!") So.... At least once... I'd want to dance on the beach. I'd want that to be at the blazing sunsets that are always present there, with a slight breeze blowing, gently swaying the palm trees.... The calming sound of the Ocean rolling in and out on its tide, its smell permeating the atmosphere and calming everything... But I'd want to be there with my dancing friends (Like all the people here on DF whom I'm supposed to share dances with! :D ), and just having a good time.... Maybe pick up some good seashells whilst I'm out! =^__^= Oh yeah. That'd be heaven....

wow  , Lita_rulez, that looks like an amzaing spot for salsa...if only we had something like that here...
my favorite spots are also outdoor ones. we used to have this spot called the sagebrush cantina that happened on sunday afternoons. nice wooden dancefloor inside and lots of patio seating outside. my salsa friends would hog a couple of tables outside and we'd dance anywhere in between, with the occasional dance indoors. they were great times...*sigh*
i also really enjoy dancing under the stars (in the summer) when certain places have these salsa evens.
festivals are fun too!!
On a little island in Cuba, only 20 people on the veranda of a restaurant, dancing the night away!
And the Cubans surprised: the blanca dances salsa and merengue  8)

the only spanish I know is 'me gusta', mais je parle francais tres tres bien :)
All I know is that ya'll been to all these exotic locations distant cruise ships in the Nile. (sorry if I'm getting off topic  ) But I know that my favorite salsa setting consists of just regular people. I've only gone to one salsa nightclub in my life (I'm fairly new to this still) and I know that what I like so much about club dancing vs. other art forms is that it's just about you your partner and the music & feeling that is exchanged between you two. No showing off, or glory, just regualar working class people enjoying themselves. Yeah . . . a very humble setting is the best for me.

Well, if it can give you any confort, you are still probably better in japanese then I am (never been able to get past lesson 7... )
Just takes to much time for something I have no one to practice with !
Spanish is probably the next language I am going to learn though. I so want to understand the words I am listening to every night ! Not so much the salsa lyrics mind you, but rather the bachata lyrics. I have had a few songs translated to me, and boy do I relate ! Almost like reading country lyrics ;)

I hear you ThatHaitianSwede : one need be no place specific to enjoy a wonderfull dance with a great partner on a wonderfull song. I actualy went to a club yesterday that a friend has been trying to drag me to for a couple of weeks now.
First of all, let me start by saying I really love the club I usualy go to. The main grudge many have against it is there is no clim there. So it is very very hot.
Now as for that club my friend wanted to drag me to, he told me :
the floor is terrible : just concrete, sticky as hell.
It is very very hot in there, much hotter then where we usually go.
The dance level is nowhere near the one at the place we go to.
The sound system is not at good either.
But I am having a great time every week, it is just a relaxed mood, most people are there just to have fun and enjoy themselves, every one is friendly.
I ended up having a very good time, though it actually is hotter than hell, no room to dance, no outa-this-world follow (nor lead as far as I could tell)
and the floor is so sticky that even with everyone gone, and giving it all I've got, I could not pass more than a double spin... And there was 80% cuban music !!!(I have turned to the dark side and only dance mambonowadays)
But the mood in the room was just... enjoyable. You are to hot ? Get a coke, kick back, relax, chat a bit with the lady next to you, and go back after a few songs...
And anyways, the music was switching a lot faster than it usualy is in the clubs I go to : I got there at 10:30pm and it closed down (early because of a litle incident) at 1:30. Well we got 3 sets of Bachata, 3 sets of zouk, 3 sets of merengue !
So after a few salsa, you get a drink, and after a while, when you feel like dancing again, wam, bachata my friend ! SO you dont get hot right away, you can just let it go... then a few salsa, a drink... merengue !
Yep, very good time indeed, I'll go back ocasonally !
So you see, the seting is not the most important thing, and I can have a blast anywhere.
But believe me, if I had my choice for "just one dance" I am not quite sure what partner I would pick, but most definitly it would be in cannes, on the beach, on a very good floor, with the sound of the tide next to us, a beautifull sunset, a light breeze, and... well, my favourit song of the moment (if I had to pick now, it would definitly be "Lady")
And a setting like that is so special precisely because it is something that you don't do very often. It adds to the dance, because it is not the usual surroundings, it is much better. It doesn't mean I don't enjoy the places I dance at otherwise (cause I do) and it doesn't mean I'd like to dance there all the time. I like it to be something exceptional, something to cherish, something to look forward to. I don't want it to become so usual, so much of a habit, that it is flavorless. I want each time I go there (so basicaly once a year) to go :
"Wow, this is truely a marvelous setting. How could it get any better than that !"

Of course I can, and I will gladly do so, but I do have two litle questions first :
1. What style do you want to dance ? (Cuban, Mambo on 1, on 2, all of them, etc.)
2. When are you coming ? (dates for me to know if I'll be in paris or not, days to know what clubs are interesting on those days)

it was just a question for me to know what I have to regret that I didn't know this year when I went

No problem, it is just that there is quite a few places, and some are more specialised in one style, some are only interesting to go to on some nights...
wouldn't want to send you to THE best club for dancing "on 2 ET" if you are only going to be there from sunday to wednsday, knowing that they only put on a salsa night tuesday, friday and saturday, now would I ;)
The good thing is, if you can manage to spend at least one monday evening in Paris, you'll get to see the place I am always at, and the fun part is that you can find very very good cuban lead, mambo on 1 lead, and depending on your luck, a few on 2 lead...
All in one night ;)
(And as a bonus : me 8) )

Same here, except you can replace anime with Video Games/manga. (and given that it was long ago, you can also put in "tape" for "CD"...)
A few years back, (say like Super NES and Genesis time) the best RPG were produced in Japan, but the category was not as popular as today. And to play Final Fantasy 6, well you needed to either do it in japanese, or wait a year and a half, praying that they might translate it in english eventualy (forget about french)
As for anime music, well, dramatic masters do help a lot ;)

  So true! Except that none of the video games and manga I have are in the Japanese (couldn't read it even if I wanted to! Kanji are eeeeevil right now! ) *happy sigh* I remember SNES and Genesis (we never got the SNES... ) But I *DO* know FFVII (Final Fantasy Seven)! Greatest game of ALL time!!!! *finished with her "Gamer-Chick" rant*

Well, the fun part is that boats do pass by all the time, and when it is dark, all the "tour boats" have lights on them so it's really a beautifull sight.
Yesterday, a few boats actually stopped for a while just to watch the dancing http://membres.lycos.fr/owk/FORUM/MINI-ICONES/DIVERS/salsa.gif
(besides, it is a close from dancing by the sea http://membres.lycos.fr/owk/FORUM/MINI-ICONES/SIMPLES/palmier01.gif as you can get in a city like paris :
