How does it work at your studio - when someone is teaching a private during a group class in the same room, does the group get the rights to the music or do you share with the private lesson?

We have a big ballroom and a small practice room, usually big classes take the big room, and privates in the little room. Can't hear eachothers music.

it depends on the size of the group class, how loud the music is, and size of the floor

but usually group classes would take precidence over private lessons but was not allowed to monopolize the music. 30% group class, 20% privates, 50% no music.

The studio I go to seems to share - generally one instructor will have control of the music while the other is explaining particular steps. If it's a large class however, they will generally just not have private lessons during that time.

I have never witnessed a group and private at the same room.....
And if I ran a studio, I would never have them running at the same time in the same room either.

Our pros tend to share them just fine. both private and group, always times you're explaining/demonstrating technique where you don't need the music.

May be some privates, esp if the lead is male and has issues dancing without the appropriate music, where they get to keep the music, but I don't remember it.

The studio I go to has two rooms. The smaller for groups and the larger for privates. I've never heard the music from the other room while being in one.

Thanks, but I can't take credit for the photo. I found it while searching the web. Pictures of shoes make me smile. :p

Unless a studio has multiple rooms, this could end up meaning foregoing offering either groups or privates during prime evening hours.

at several studios that i've worked at there have been multiple privates and even multiple group classes going on at the same time on the same floor. up to 3 group classes and 4 or more privates. as a teacher it really trains you to keep the attention of your students and as a student it really helps you develop concentration and focus.

AND... as a studio you're pulling in mucho bucks for that hour!

Since we only have one great room, sharing is the only thing I can think of. Finding the right level of volume is key so everyone can enjoy.

Those who are serious about their dancing can focus in their learning environment. And, there are so many things besides the live musical dancing part of learning that go into a private or group lesson. Ideally, only group or only private is best, but when presented with a must do situation, respect and awareness go a long way in making the two separate sessions harmonic.
