How many of you know dance instructors who have jobs in addition to teaching dance? In some parts of the country, and perhaps everywhere for beginning dance instructors, it is often necessary to have another job in order to make ends meet.

Then, of course there are those people who purposefully teach only part time because they are sharing their joy of dance, not because they are trying to make a career of teaching. I suppose some use dance as a part-time job for extra money. (This is effectively what I am doing, although I would prefer to be teaching full time.)

What is your experience? Do you know teachers with other jobs?

The four Pros that I work with all only do dance!

I know two other local Pros who do have "other" jobs . . .

I knew one teacher at a previous school who was only part time. She enjoyed teaching but held a regular job in Human Resources because that was what she enjoyed. Also, the pay was better for her.
My current teacher is part owner of the business. She teaches most evenings and all weekend. She and her partner also compete. I think she may eventually go full time but they have only recently setup the business (two years) and she is probably waiting for the right time to make the transition.

My salsa teacher just teaches salsa, but he's kinda scrapin' by I think. (Mostly because the cost of living is so high in Japan!) :(
