Though I'm not sure this goes in this forum at all, I'll ask anyway: I was at a cast-party for my local drama group. The other kids were doing some kind of dance for "Cotton Eye Joe" (which has an annoying tendancy to get stuck in people's heads  ) that involved a part when they swung one arm around for a couple of seconds and bending both knees back one at a time. What is that called? It didn't look like the same dance on all of the sites telling you how to do it. Thanks!

Gosh, I have been to some interesting cast parties in my day - but I can't quite imagine the dance or motion you are describing.
Not to be facietious but could they be dancing the Cotton Eyed Joe - to the Cotton Eyed Joe.

Heh-heh.... the cast party had a dj. The play we had done was "The Sound of Music" (full of songs that get stuck in your head UGH) and apparently the younger kids enjoy that song. The teens did it for the heck of it. I would have, but couldn't figure out how as they were going fairly fast. Anyway, all of the sites that have the designated dance for that song had it as a couple's dance or something.

Huh? Cotten eye Joe is a line dance that be done in singles or couples. It travels around the room, line of dance, and it goes pretty quick, particularly near the end of the song. It sounds like what you're describing is a variation that involves contractions and/or isolations.

Okay, now here's a stupid question: does a line dance have to be in a line? :D

No. A line dance is a structured dance that doesn't require partners and/or lead and follow.

Oh. Okay, then that's probably it. Thanks!
