I don't know how new this is...my teacher has been dressing like that for Smooth competitions with his Pro partner for the past four years. It does look nice and gives a nicer line than wearing a white shirt, that's for sure.

i guess its new to me. i've heard from 2 coaches the past month. i've been in the old white shirt style. guess i am gonna move to the black shirt for the pro section of the comp next time around.

I've been doing a black shirt with a subdued gold vest and a puffy ascot. I also have a white shirt, dark blue vest, puffy ascot combination. I've done the all black look (+ colored tie)) at times as well and the white shirt,bow-tie,vest things as a beginner. Partially it all depends how I feel and what I've seen a lot of at recent competitions. I don't want it to be like standard where all the gents are dressed the same... Smooth is about expression.... I haven't found the costume that feels right for me yet, but then again I haven't found the partner either :)

This appears to be the breakdown of the amateur smooth last final (6) I was in...
4 Black Vests
All with black shirts
* 2 with ties matching dresses
* 1 all black
* 1 white tie, hankerchief, cuff's and collar (me)
2 Double breasted jackets (not tails)
* 1 all black
* 1 white shirt, hankerchief, with tie complimentary to ladies dress

That's an interesting idea... although I wear a black oxford dress shirt (with annoying white buttons) whenever I'm out dancing in general. I don't think I had considered wearing black shirts for competition, but I'll keep that in mind.
Not that I'd compete that much, mind you.

Get a Sharpie or other permanent magic marker and color the annoying white buttons black and you'll be all set!

Rhinestone button covers could be cool, too. :idea:

Re: permanent black markers...
That's funny... I already did that with my UnderArmour body-tight T-shirt which I wear underneath. (Definite recommendation for all of you dancing fellows out there.)
