View Full Version : Is Relocation for a Dance Partner Workable?

There are a couple of times I have considered relocation in my seemingly eternal quest for a dance partner. At this point in my life, dance is more important to me than my career - and that is probably a necessary requirement. But I have my qualms about the feasability of this scenario.
I can easily see a situation in which the two people feel different levels of commitment, based on the initial imbalance in the relationship (i.e. the effort the mover went to to relocate)

Has anyone successfully relocated for a new parter and had it work out? Or maybe the flip side is true? Does it only make sense for high level professionals - or would it work for serious amateurs also?

Any thoughts?

I almost relocated from Boston to NY. Then uncertainty about finding a job there, and the strength of the personal part of the partnership suggested against it (though it was my opinion the dancing part would have supported it). Now I'm finding engineering job prospects in Boston hardly look any better. So who knows - I might still end up in NY (without that partnership) if I find something more promising work wise there than in Boston. Much as I'd like to have dancing be the driving factor, I may not have that kind of choice until business in my field picks up again.

I have witnessed a few instances where professionals relocated then got left flat, in a strange town starting from scratch.

If it were me, I would get them to move, I wouldn't take the chance myself.

But like any decision, weigh the advantages against the disadvantages. Make a list of what you will not compromise on and see if any of those items prevents you from moving. It is always a chance someone has to take. The question one should be asking, what happens if it doesn't work out? Am I stuck there, does that place have other opportunities? Can I come back or will I have lost everything I built here?

Sometimes taking a chance can be the best thing that could happen. Sort of like going to that first dance lesson.
