What other dances are popular in Jamaica?

hi and thanks!

no I haven't tried the rueda but I've seen it done alot here. I haven't found anyone who can teach me it though so I'm 'limited' to couples dancing  Isn't it based on Cuban dancing though?

Yes, rueda is a sub-set of Casino style salsa.

Welcome to the forums, Jamaicanspice! I so wanna go there! I've added Jamaica to my dancing "to do" list! :)
My favourite salsa place closed two weeks ago and I'm suffering a serious case of withdrawal...
Thanks for the tip

Welcome Jamaicaspice! Jamaica isn't a "lil" island. It is one of the largest in the Caribbean, the largest amongst the english speaking islands

Have you been to any of the other islands? Have you heard any steelpan salsa songs? (another thread which I haven't got time to look for and link :( )

I have danced in Trinidad and the style there is quite different to anything I have experienced - very ballroom like. :?

Hi MadamSamba, thanks for the welcome. I SOOOOO know what you mean about those withdrawal symptoms....I've been through them myself....*shudder* not nice :D So guess what...jump on a plane and head to New Kingston, Kingston, Jamaica and register at the Hilton Hotel for a couple weeks....that way you wont have to go far for a little salsa fix :D 8)

Hi Pacion, thanks for the welcome :D ahhhhh, I kinda know that my island isn't little in the true sense of the word. What I should have done was put the word in brackets so you would know I meant it figuratively speaking. 8)

I've been to Cayman once....but I only recently learnt that they have a salsa club there so next time I go I will be checking it out. I haven't been to any other Caribbean island yet...my travels have been mainly to the States so far. In terms of steel pans and salsa songs....well, I HAVE heard Steel bands PLAYING salsa songs :) . Oh by the way, every month end there is a live band at the Jonkanoo Lounge (that's where I go latin dancing at the Hilton Hotel) playing latin music. You should check it out when you come here.

There was a guy here from Trinidad that I danced with.....beautiful movements!! and you're right....it is kinda like ballroom dancing.

Dancing is the point when a dancer becomes the dance
My soul dances.. my body merely plays the rhythme
Dream the dream of dance.. searching for the time to dance the dance of dreams

BEAUTIFUL words MadamSamba.....just BEAUTIFUL!! You've just spoken what my heart has been fighting to find the words to describe what this music means to me :)

I know that you meant it figeratively. I was just instigating

And!?! Your assignment for today is to write a 1,000 essay etc etc

There was a guy here from Trinidad that I danced with.....beautiful movements!! and you're right....it is kinda like ballroom dancing.

The thing that surprised me most though is that if you put on a calypso song, you get hip action that would put a ferris wheel to shame. Yet, change the music to salsa and all the feeling/movement disappears :(

hmmm, I wonder why that is. Personally I am NOT a calypso fan so you wont see me 'enjoying' the music....but put on something with a salsa beat  8) and I just GOTTA bust a move!! *ahem* oh the shame  *sigh*

What's your sign baby? You been here before? Its a nice place. Your daddy must be a thief, because someone stole those stars in your eyes! I've been dreaming of you all life...yes dreaming of someone just like you!

Can I buy you a drink? Do you mind if I sit down next to you? I so love the way you dance, you express yourself so well...you remind me of someone I used to know...she was the love of my life but she's gone now...so I have to sleep all alone in my huge king size bed...the one with silk sheets and down pillow made from the finest materials in France. And next to my bed is my wine case of very expensive wine...blah blah blah...so how about it baby?

Your parents must be farmers honey, because you sure have nice *BLEEPS!*

Oh, a mistaken case of flirting? Well Sabor and I have to keep tabs on all of you lovely ladies when one of us isn't online. Truthfully, GR is a bigger flirt than both of us, as is NeoDevin. Those two are actually serious! :kissme:

Firstly, welcome to DF Jamaicanspice, and secondly, I never use any pickup lines in real life. Never has been my style, and never will. All of the ones from my last post are lines that I read in magazines or heard from friends, and sadly enough many of them I've heard at Salsa venues by other guys trying to pick up girls!

I let my dancing speak for me...but a pick up artist I've never been! Although I do pick up art from now and then, I can lift a most modern art pretty high before I toss it through an open window (where most of it belongs IMHO)!

Hmm, I'd love to go to Jamaica someday. I've been listening to Reggae music for almost 25 years...and please no comments about smoking refers anyone!

Pacion - By the way my eyes are brown and green, no joke! But you have to be a few inches away to see the green...honestly...hmm...wait I may have said that to a few ladies before...or did they notice before I told them? Either way...that's my only "line"...but its reserved for those special moments that we find so rarely in life...

Thanks you guys 8) I've been under some serious work stress lately plus I went through a rough couple weeks where literally once a week for an entire six-week period I got a call to say a friend or family members of friends had died :( Almost every Sunday for the last month a half there has been a funeral to attend....after the first two funerals I didn't go to the others...it was too much. Then on top of everything else I heard that a girl friend of mine who was in a serious accident last year (broke her back) has just been diagnosed with cancer of the breast and liver  . It was just too much happening too soon. It's been rough you guys....its been rough!! but by God's grace it will be ok.
