View Full Version : Excellent snarky "Shall We Dance?" prediction
Clipped out of the local weekly's summer movie summary:
Shall We Dance?
Genre: Recent Remake
One-Sentence Summary: An uptight accountant learns to shake his moneymaker for a seductive dance instructor.
Talent: Jennifer Lopez, Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon, Stanly Tucci
Known Enemies: Shall We Dance? (1997), Dirty Dancing
Our Prediction: This movie will do for ballroom dancing what Swingers did for swing dancing: take a growing fad and drive it into the ground with a sledgehammer.

*Edit*
Im a fool and misunderstood remark
I havent seen swingers..
DD2- Havana Nights opened this week in Aus to woeful reviews.... I saw it a few months back and I thought it was quite good. Not a stich compared to the first and thats where I think everyon gets let down...they are hoping that its a direct prequel to the first. :(

I think the snarky remark meant that "Swingers" KILLED swing, not that it helped it in any way. ? ? :?:

Yup, I'm with Laura... the sledgehammer comment seems to indicate that they expect the movie to tank *and* to kill off ballroom as well. :(

Hilarious review, but wrong. Ballroom isn't a fad. It's been around a long time, and has enough strength and support to live down a really bad ballroom movie, even if it does star J-Lo.

It already has lived down a couple of bad movies. There was "Let it Be Me" which was a romance set in New York dance studios, and then there was "Dance With Me" with Vanessa Williams.

Ouch! The sledgehammer comment sounds a bit harsh, but this reviewer probably saw the original cut before it was delayed for some refilming.
I can't imagine this film being as bad as the reviewer makes it out, but we shall see.
No matter, ballroom won't be dieing anytime too soon. My guess is the reviewer likely didn't have any appreciation for ballroom before watching the movie anyway.

I have it on VHS myself...
Seriously, I'd burn the thing but it was a present, from my Mom, who just knew that it was related to the type of dancing I do (although I really don't like merengue)... so I just don't have the heart to trash it. But yes, that has to be the single most G-d-awful dance related movie EVER! Yech!

Kinda like "Assasination Tango" was given to me from one of my kids . . . a few minutes of (I thought "sexy"- love the leg work) Tango and 90 minutes of BORING!
I can't throw mine away either . . . besides, it's on a DVD and doesn't take up much room . . .

Any expousre is good for ballroom. Those who hate Ballroom and the movie might have their say, but J-Lo is still a box office draw even after Gigli (SP?). Richard Gere might give a Pretty Woman performance and ladies will swoon. It is still a good story, I liked it even in Japenese and I usually get bored watching foriegn films.
Predicting it will tank is probably a safe bet, because dance movies usually do. Predicting the demise of Ballroom, that has been going on for ages and it is still here. But I predict that dancers will buy it on video and most will go see it. At least this will have the star power needed to attract attention and it will get the pubicity to make non-dancers, especially women go see it. Richard Gere is usually considered a good date movie actor, excluding American Gigilo. Dance studios got really busy after Saturday Night Fever and Dirty Dancing. But most of the other Dance movies really fizzled.
If the movie does well, you will see a few dance movies that have Patrick Swayze's involvment because he has plans for 3 or 4 dance movies, and his cameo in Havana Nights was part his getting those projects off the ground.

I'm holding out for Richard Gere and the Olsen twins. Personally, I would like to see him in the title role of The Most Tragical and Lamenatable Death of Edward II. But one can't have it all.
Prediction for the movie?
Well, to quote Mr. T as Clubber Lang:
"My prediction? Pain."
