Some emoticons are obvious, I think. Others clearly aren't obvious, at least to me. So. What do these smilies mean to you?
:P  :?:  :ladiesma: :friend: :uplaugh:

Uh. No, just confused.
Take the rolling eyes smilie as an example. When and where I was raised, rolling eyes meant a challenge, as in, somebody was going to fight, verbally or physically. Here, I use it to connote irony, because I think that's how everybody else is using it.
Some things, like happy smiles or laughing out loud, are obvious.
But what do bouncing smilies, or razzing smilies, or rolling eyed smilies mean? I have a feeling that, whatever they mean, it's not universal. :?

Well, I think that the :?: is just about as straightforward as the :!: or the  , no? As far as the  , I can't remember the last time I saw someone use it in a DF post bt i'd think it has to do with that whole "light going on/bright idea" metaphor.
The bouncing ones just seem to express a lot of exubeation in my mind, but I don't really get the idea behind the Razz myself...

Think back to when you were a small kid and stuck your tongue out at people. Then you can figure out what the razz smilie is all about.

For me:
 = I am thinking about this or am unimpressed (hence why I use it alot with Sabor  )
:friend: = giving someone a e-web kiss on the cheek because I wrote something 'tongue-in-cheek'. The blue face is the person I am writing to/about and the yellow one is me being all 'cuddly'  thinking about it, I seem to use this one often with Sabor
:ladiesma: someone getting kissing on their left and right cheek at the same time (or, as the name suggests, a lady's man?) I think I have used this one on SG a couple of times

lol, if you think about it... all those faces are things people do in real life. the internet is just trying to translate it so you can do it online too =) not a form or boredom and it's not something you have to analyze... just... use them, lol

I've used it before... for me it's for those eureka moments, e.g.,

I struggle to choose between:
:bouncy: and
:) and :D (:D looks cuter so I overuse it)
:o and  ( :o doesn't look very surprised so I overuse )
I don't really get the idea behind the Razz myself...
Me neither.
And I don't use 8) much I suppose because I'm not a cool person...

Things I use a lot (no doubt everyone noticed by now):
8) = stating something being cool/fun
 = irony or unimpressed, same as you would rolling eyes in real life
 = "WHAT!!!!!????"
 = "yes....I did/am that. How embarrasing..."
:o = pleasantly surprised (not used much)
 = "Hey, I got an idea!"
:friend: = *hugs*
:nope: = "silly!!!" (used on Sabor & Devin a lot)
:notworth: = "we are not worthy!!!!" (used on Boriken a lot)
:bouncy:  = YAY!!!!!!!!
:uplaugh: = I only use this for serious laughs....coz it looks like it's laughing at something/someone rather than laughing with them.
:artsy: :bandit: :snake: I havn't used.
:headwall: I love this, but havn't found much use for it  !

Seems to me that this is only good for laughing at the post/quote directly above it... but still not as happy/friendly looking as

I kind of thought that icon meant sarcastic humor. With all those teeth, it looks kind of, uhm, biting. Who knows?
