View Full Version : Visiting New York

Here is the scenario:

You are joining your older sister in NY for a long weekend (read "me") - all expenses (up to a preset limit) paid by her company. For those who know NY, what would be your "must see/do" recommendations to out of towners? Expenses are limited to "dinner, taxis/limos, entertainment" therefore, no shopping sprees to Tiffany or Cartier for me

We will be there Thursday through to Monday evening. Big sis does not dance salsa and I have already negotiated Jimmy Anton's Social for Sunday late afternoon/evening. She isn't into opera or classical music either.

NOW, the fun part (being the spontenous, rather than last minute, person that I am ) is planning the programme for those days. As the younger sister, it has been left to me to organise ::sigh::

So, any thoughts/suggestions?

I think I have identified and just have to decide which night and exactly which ones:
Theatre shows
- A Raisin in the Sun" with Sean Combs and reviewed very well on the Economist website in their NY City Guide
- Throughly Modern Millie
- Phantom of the Opera (which I still have not seen)
- 42nd Street
- The Lion King (which I thought for some strange reason would be best to see on Broadway rather than London. Not sure why.)

Tours
- Radio City Music Hall (there aren't any shows/events on that I thought would be interesting)
- Statute of Liberty
- Still researching. I fancy a bus tour of NY, a river cruise (if such a thing exists), a visit to the Salsa Museum (but shhhh! don't tell my sis'). I also remember reading somewhere about a Rockerfeller museum with a restaurant attached I think, that looked interesting

Restaurants
- still researching

The funny thing is that at first, five days seemed a loooong time to fill with activities but now it does seem like enough time!

Suggestions/Thoughts greatfully appreciated :D

I always tell people that if I had but one afternoon or evening to spend in NYC I'd go to the top of the Empire State Building and then go down to Greenwich Village to my favorite cafe, La Lanterna. It's near NYU, on one of the side streets leading south from Washington Square Park. I can't recall which street but I always find it. The other cafes down there are great too, so just pick one.

I used to live across the river in Hoboken and would do this little itinerary from from time to time. The last time I was back in NYC I was only there for 48 hours and and I made sure I did it then, too. :-)

Definitely go see a play if you can! If it's anything popular, though, you might want to try to get tickets before you leave -- shows like "The Lion King" are known to sell out as much as a year in advance!!! But you can always try to pick up a last-minute ticket at the Will Call window at the box office right before the performance, you never know....

I was able to get cheap tickets for a couple different shows by going to the TKTS booth in Times Square on the day of the show. Of course, you have to be flexible and take whatever's available. But when I was there, my only goal was to "see a Broadway show," so I didn't much care.

Oops, forget the Empire State Building! Re daytrips, the other criteria is that we have to get back in time for evening activities

Thanks Laura and Pygmalion. Pygmalion, cost of the tickets "isn't an issue" as the company will pay for it. It is just deciding the "must see/do" :(

It is the typical dilemia - "here's some money, go spend it" - and then you are suddenly stumped at what to do, whereas before, it is, if only I could, I would... :?

I know from our past discussions you're not much of a museum person, but NYC does have some of the best museums in the world, so that's what I, personally, would go see.

There's always that ferry thing, too.

How about having lunch in Little Italy or Chinatown?

Empire State Building... did that... liked it. Screamed off the tower like Kermit the Frog did in The Muppets Take Manhattan. ;)

Did the three-hour ferry tour too. Tried not to hum the theme to Gilligan's Island, but...

If you like art, go to the Cloisters and MoMA (not that the other museums stink of course).

As for musicals, I'd say see Phantom if there are seats. Two years ago, I went and saw Proof with Anne Heche and the last show of The Crucible with Liam Neeson (which satisfied my personal goal to see a Broadway play) and 42nd Street (ditto for Broadway musical).

I always wished I had done more dancing when I was in New York, but I didn't even think about the salsa congress or ballroom comps going on the weeks I was there. Boy, was I dumb and naive, but I think I was too excited being there. Not to mention busy with work... I almost missed the free James Taylor taping/concert at Grant's Tomb two years ago.

The last time I went to NYC, I was lucky enough to get a seat for a taping of David Letterman. You have to call in the afternoon to get a number then show up before the taping and hope there are no shows (tickets are booked way in advance).

I am not sure when you are going but it if is soon (no tapings in summer) - you maybe able to catch some TV show tapings. Call the front desk of the hotel, the place I stayed at had a whole listing of all the shows taping in the city and how to get tickets for them.

Thanks CG!

I think Lion King is a "definite" must try and do. Just discovered that one of the Broadway choreographers was someone who went to the same high school and dance school I did a thousand years ago  I remember seeing her dance at dance school events and inspired by her :D

 I just checked out the prices for the Lion King  Now where did I put my smelling salts

Prices are ranging from $110 to $300+ I shall never again say that theatre tickets in London are expensive! Normally tickets will cost/can be justified to be around the $200+ mark if a celebrity is performing, say Pavarotti/Elton John himself etc etc. But for regular, run of the mill, Joe and Jane Bloggs tends to be about $75 tops  Looks like it will have to be a matinee if I don't want to blow the whole budget on the Lion King

I vote for Thoroughly Modern Millie. If you can see Raisin in a matinee and Millie at night, that would be great.

The Met is a lovely museum. But if you really have time for only one, I'd go for the Whitney or the Guggenheim. The Whitney especially.

Take a walk in Central Park. Spend an afternoon there. Watch the street magicians.

The Statue of Liberty looks better from afar.

Go to the top of the Empire State Building, a necessary pilgrimage since Kong.

Get a bagel at a bagel place. NY is the only city in the world where you can get a genuine bagel.

Find a restaurant in Little Italy. Order a bottle of Chianti, and have a nice dinner. I know I owe you grilled salmon on penne, and I wish I could treat you--but I no longer live in NY. Alas alas.

Go to the Bronx. To Yankee Stadium. See a game. Just see a game.

If you decide you want to go to the movies, go see The Day After Tomorrow. That would be something to see in NY.

Have a great time, and the next time you visit the states, come to Tennessee!

Cheers,

Genesius

With all respect to the Salsa Musuem, I read somewhere that it is 'at the back of a shop' so, not really a musuem in terms of displays with pretty signs

lol GR re the Statute of Liberty and TJ re shooping. I am liking the idea of going to the top of the Empire State Building. I also found a 'Sex in the City' tour, that takes you to various locations/shops from the series. Also found there is a Sunday lunch cruise that takes you up and down the Hudson, lasts a couple of hours or so.

Hmmmm not sure about the Yankee Stadium  not a baseball/american footbal fan. As I don't really know the games I will be people watching more than actually enjoying the game

Oh, if you're going up and down the Hudson and out of the city proper, there's a lot more. You might want to check out Tarrytown--it's been years since I've been there, but it used to be very touristy. Big-time Washington Irving stuff there. If you can take a cruise up as far as West Point, it's really worth seeing--lovely country. If you can actually take a day trip there, you could visit not only West Point but Bear Mountain, where you can hike, picnic, or go look at the black bears in their little enclosures. Also up north a bit there's Woodstock, which is a quaint little arts community, and Red Hook and things like the Roosevelt Mansion. Not Buckingham Palace, but it's a landmark. Rural New York is one of the most beautiful states in the country.

Re Yankee Stadium. You just haven't been to New York unless you've been to a Yankee game. I've heard there's another ball club in the city, but I don't believe it.

 GR! There is a cruise but it is only in September/October  but I did think that that would be a good one to do. An excuse for a return visit perhaps? This is so funny! I haven't even been as yet and already, I am plotting to return!

All the other things you said sound great, but I discovered yesterday that my sister will arrive very late on Thursday  and due to a work commitment, might only have from late afternoon Friday onwards for us to do stuff. So, it is really we have almost a day less than I thought. But, that's okay. Just means the Lion King is a definite go

I see tj wants to be a comedian

 alright, I will confess that I walked into that one with my eyes open  I will let you render me speechless this time, but don't think you will be able to make a habit out, otherwise, the television is mine*

What's a bunfight?

The last time I heard a Brit walk into it here was when my friend Jenny walked into an office supply store looking for rubbers.

tj's definition of bunfight = something more specific to the human anatomy

I have just discovered that La India and Tito Nieves will be performing at the Apollo Theatre on the Saturday

Has anyone ever been to the Apollo? Is it a sitdown affair or is dancing allowed?

I've never been to the Apollo, but, from what I understand, technically speaking, it is sit-down, in that you will have an assigned seat. That rarely stops people who are so inclined from dancing in the aisles, from all I've heard.

I saw her live in concert at one of those Central Park freebies, supported by Frankie Negron. I had a blast, especially when I was being seated at the VIP area  ! (even got to meet her after the show :D )

Don't forget the Museum of Natural History! Very cool place! On the west side of Central Park!

I'm an oldest child, too, and I know we like to plan things out, but don't forget to be flexible for something that might just tickle your fancy when you get there. If you try to cram to much in then things can get quite hectic and you will have less fun.

Oh, and the other baseball team that plays out of New York, are the Mets, Shay Stadium. And if you ever get to Boston, I'd recommend Fenway Park, too.

Went to a Tito Nieves concert when I arrived in Cleveland. It was in a relatively small (in terms of concert venues) convention center/hotel ballroom. That was a great concert, and I've been a good fan of his since then, although I don't buy enough of his albums to show for it.
